What exactly constitutes as an MC schematic? Would be nice to see an example of one.

Yes, that is what it is, a site devoted to sharing building plans for minecraft.

What constitutes a schematic...

You use a program called MCEdit, inside of this program you open up the world where you building, or other objects are that you want to convert to a schematic, from withing MCEdit you highlight the building or objects and export them to a schematic file.

Another user can then download the .schematic file and use MCEdit to place it in their own world, rotate it, nudge it etc.

Because a schematic is made up of blocks of what the user has created such as a building for example, (or a space ship) etc, it's pretty impossible to post an example, but I'll try below:

The above is a ship that another user created (I have nothing to do with creating it.

And attached to this message is the .schematic file that one could use in MCEdit to add it to their own game.

Here is another image of a building that the author has already cloned in MCEdit, think of the green building as being one that could be saved in the .schematic form and others could then use it:

Oh I see. I was thinking it was like a blueprint sort of thing where you could try and build the same thing as someone else by looking at their blueprints. But instead this is actually copying the building entirely in the program so you don't even have to build it yourself.

The thing is that it could still be used in that fashion.  The difference would be that you would have the blueprint in 3D inside of the game by importing a schematic using MCEdit, then build your own based on the building you just placed.  When you are done you can reopen the world in MCEdit and remove the building that you imported using MCEdit to highlight the imported building and delete the blocks with the delete blocks command.

If there is ever a program created that creates flat printable blueprints for building stuff in Minecraft, then I'll be glad to add what ever it spits out as another item that can be added to the site for others to download.  As far as I'm aware though, there isn't any such program just yet.  But people could certainly do it by hand and make their own drawings of a 'blueprint' in something like Excel if they wanted to and I'll add a new category for 'Blueprints' to the site so that people can upload them in there so they don't get mixed in with the schematic files.  Good idea actually since I use Excel for city building layouts, so why not draw out plans that people can then build inside of the game based on the plan that they print out.

i could easily see this being helpful for people who want to have servers devoted more to RPG and have towns and etc which you cannot destroy. I would give this a shot, but it may be to much for me to do haha. Would it be possible to transfer schematics from creative mode to survival? That would be easier to do by far.

As far as I know, as long as you can access your world file with MCEdit, then you can export or import a schematic file.
