Okay, I think this particular review pretty much summed up my initial impressions when I first bought the game when it was first released, I'm going to have a go at the demo  (don't want to open that pretty box) and see if my impressions of the game has changed any.

Review at IGN:

If you have seen a review that is more flattering to the game feel free to post it, we must balance everything out in the universe.

Side Note: See if you can find the game Startopia, that was a lot of fun for me.

Well, I can't let that review stand unopposed.   I think Space Colony is one of the more underrated games ever.   It has quirks, and the unturnable map can be a problem especially when things overlap and block the view, but I keep coming back to it for a full run every few months or so.   The dialogue and cutscenes are priceless and the opening sequence  is a classic (you have to wait a loooong time to see the whole thing but the gags are worth it).   Definitely slightly under-developed, and now very dated tech, but I keep hoping for SC 2 someday.   Until then, I'm a loyalist.  Lets keep the torch lit. Thanks for the tip CB

I had a quick look at Startopia on Gamespot and for a 2001 game the 3D graphics look good, its the kind of game I'm into at the moment, quirky, amusing. innovative, interesting, have imagination and flair - everything the mainstream game producers aren't releasing at the moment. Its one damned OTT FPS or yet another take on RPG after another ad nauseum - so I'm working hard finding games that entertain and give me recreational leisure time, rather than something that is one great mental taxing chore. I had enough of that in my working life!

Incidentally I bought it on Amazon, a 2005 version for XP at 4.99 free delivery - can't be bad. On the other hand Space Colony if memory serves was OK for a while, nice concept but then the various demands made by the residents started adding up and up and up made me feel like slapping them. I don't mind if my little peeps become truculent to a point but when they turn into whining spoilt brats then my patience runs out and they get the big heave -ho.

Oh! and I snuck in a copy of Black & White 2 which looks as if it has potential.

Well thanks for that
