There's the question...so any Vista users out there able to run SimCity: Societies with no problems?  I'm running it on my currently Alien w/ NO problems at all and when I get my new one I was thinking of getting Vista due to some games coming out that utilize DX10....

thanks,

Sweathing from thinkng hard  Nope... I took it off my Vista box.. and like a lot of players waiting pretty much to see what DX10 games arrive...that can exist without aggravation...or what not.  Looking around cautiously

As long as XP deliver the least amount of playing problems..I'll stick to it.  Having the the extra boxes to compare does help my approach.  If Vista wasn't such a resource hog..not to say XP is a saint.. I'm concerned whether it'll ever be a Gamer OS.. no matter how powerful your supporting hardware is spec'd.   wink

Have good New Years pat!!   Happy Dance

DX10 is like CB said just a Hype !

I can hardly see any difference between DX9 and DX10 with Hellgate: London  for example..

Only 8 mins. left to 2008 here  Happy Dance Happy Dance

Strange everything is in Black & White in 2008  Looking around cautiously All the color is gone  Laughing

Well I have been running Vista Ultimate since July 23 2007.
And I have been able to run most games in my native 1680x1050 widescreen resolution.

But Vista sure is a resource hog like Max says. I bet I could have used more filters and goodies on XP.

But I let it be and wait for SP1 that comes out in February. And see if there is any improvements like Vista using less resources with games.

If it doesn't I'm installing XP instead....

I mean I have  an Intel Core 2 Extreme + 4GB ram + Leadtek 8800Ultra , it's still a high end computer even after 5 months.

the lappy i'm getting will have a CoreDuo Extreme 2.8 gh processor, 4 gigs of ram and two 512 8800 GTXs running SLI (for a gig of video memory)...I'm thinking that Vista will run okay but my concern is being able to run games like SimCity: Societies, The Witcher, Oblivion, etc., at full 1900x1220 reso w/ everything maxed...and if you're telling me I have a better chance of doing that w/ XP...well, that kind of makes the decision easy!

Thumbs Up  You sound committed pat!!

UC..so far has had the better Vista experience.  I only rate what I've had to deal with.and since we all play the same games..mostly at least.  That is what I based my assessment.

They do some neat things with Aliens..to make them perform..but you already know that.  My last two builds were made with very little expense spared.. my SLI rig has two 512 8800GTS cards (640MB versions).. I'm pretty sure the GTX's are 768MBs.. Mm?  I have a card spec chart on Wordpad..ah here it is...

  • ......................8800 Ultra  8800 GTX 8800 GTS  8800 GTS 512MB  8800 GT
  • Stream Processors 128 ........128 ......96 ................128 .....................112
  • Core Clock (MHz) ..612 ........575 ......500 ...............650 ....................600
  • Shader Clock(MHz)1500 ......1350 ....1200 ..............1625 ..................1500
  • Mem Clock (MHz) .1080 ........900 .....800 ..............1000 ....................900
  • Memory Amount ...768MB .....768MB ..640MB/320MB .512MB .............512MB
  • Memory Interface .384-bit ....384-bit 320-bit ...........256-bit ...........256-bit
  • Mem BW (GB/sec) .103.7 .......86.4.....64 .................64 .....................57.6
  • TFR(billion/sec) ......39.2 .......36.8 ....24 .................41.6 ..................33.6

note: A GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB must be paired with another GeForce 8800 GTS 512 MB, regardless of graphics card manufacturer to enable SLI technology.

The GTS comes in three config..640..320..and 512..and can be used in "matched" pairs for SLI..I suppose it is possible for other configs specially made for mass builders..could create some alternate spec's ..it has happened before.

I sure what ever is the case it will be one powerful lappy ..by all other lap maker standards..so I sure it will give you the Reso's expected.  The tough hurdle for laptop in general is the heat.. the confined working environment just doesn't physically allow premium cooling.  Heat is the enemy of all PC components..so long hours of continual play does factor in for the life expectancy ..laptop or desktop.

I'm enjoying the performance of my single 8800 Ultra..(like UC's).. I have the SLI box running Vista.. so pat!! double check to see which card you're spec'd to have installed..GTX or GTS..the chart shows the differences.

Hope this helps..and of course my opinion is inserted ..too  hehe as always   Laughing
