This is the thread to leave your tips and tricks for SimCity Societies.  Please try to keep the offtopic chatter outta here.  Yeah I know, Im the worst offender so when i do it, you all let me know.

Tip 1.
Mods: To avoid having to redownload mods all over again everytime that you want to use them (in the case of uninstalling them with the new mod removal tool), what you should do is the following (windows xp):
1. Download the mod to a folder where you will permanantly store the mods.
2. Once the file is downloaded, it will likely come in as a SCSPack file.  In windows xp, right click on the SCSPack file and choose the "send to" option and in the next list that opens choose "Compressed (zipped) folder".  What this does is to take the original SCSPack file and compress it and stick it into a zip file.
3. Delete the original SCSPack file (or double click on it to install it, which will make it go away too)

In this way when you want to use them, use the built in Zip file extraction that comes with Windows XP, double click on the zipped folder and XP will show you the contents (which will be the one SCSPack file) simply double click on that from within the zipped folders contents and the installer will take it from there.  But because you did this from the zipped extractor window, the file will remain behind so that you can reinstall it later without having to download it again.

Tip 2. Download the mod removal tool from the SimCity Societies General message forum: http://simcitysocieties.ea.com/community/forum/messages.php?threadID=ad68acbaab02691e30e2b9003cc29464&directoryID=213&startRow=1&openItemID=item.213

If anybody else has tips, please leave them for others to learn by.

More of game-play/starter tips than anything else:

1) Take the time to lay out an initial road grid that is pleasing to you and have a pre-planned idea of where this city is going ahead of time.

2) Don't fear the filters but don't feel 'married' to them!

3) From an aesthetics standpoint, try not to create large areas of the same building (i.e., houses) and at least leave some spacing between.

4) When starting the game, by all means use the advanced map generating options!

5) Consider the minutiae.  The little spaces around and behind buildings can be used to create amazingly detailed civic spaces.

6) The single-placed tree options can reach a bit further down on shorelines and a bit further up on mountainsides than the mass tree placers.

7) A best-bet for power is the hydrogen plant.  Many kw and zero polution for 6000 simoleans.

8) When designing a city, allow it to grow from experience.  I.E., you've travelled, think about the towns/cities you've been in!  Most cities are not 100% logical or partitioned, so don't be afraid to meld sections of cities together!

Much of this is just of the IMHO vein, but I thought I'd toss it out there!

later,
pat!
