From the Ea board:

Hi folks,
We know there is a lot of anticipation for news on the next game update, and the SimCity team is just as anxious to announce what we've been working on for the last few weeks. In fact, we are extremely excited and can't wait to give you the news. We are putting the finishing touches on the official announcement, and we'll proclaim it far and wide next week.

For now, for the loyal SimCity forum community, here are a few details... there is a new game update coming. It's a large update, with many new features and enhancements. Its contents are based on the many requests from the fan base. It is the first in a series of updates.

That's all we can say for now. Keep your eye on simcitysocieties.ea.com next week for more details. Have a great weekend!

Thanks,
SimLeaderKB & The SimCity Team

Good news indeed Agreed Happy
I just hope they're giving the punters what they asked for,
I prefer the way the roads are now to the roads in Caesar IV, could never manage those diagonal ones.
(you notice they say the first of many)

It will be interesting to see what they add to the game.  There have been so many things that have been asked for it could boggle the mind.  Personally I hope that they add more financial aspects to the game.  Something that really makes it challenging to try to keep the budget headed in the right direction.  Even with their maintenance center mod it's overly easy to keep the budget in the green, so it would be great if they added something into the game to throw in some twists there.

Smiley Blink Good analysis CB... I have created a boat load of towns..and all basically get to a certain point..and that's it.  Mmm?  kinda like "blackout Bingo"..once you've plopped something into every conceivable /"acceptable" spot.. the end is in sight.  One of the Kids mentioned it reminded them of "sandbox" maps in Pharaoh/Cleo of old.. simply city building ..that's all ..fill up the map and you're finished.

It'll be interesting to see what the Devs come up with... might give some insight on what they had in mind for the games playability.  Other than that..I'm adjusting somewhat.. I wasn't a SimCity advocate..I had the games but could not get hooked into the style of play.. something always seemed to be missing to do.. while I watched and waited... and watched..some more.   wink

Chris alluded to the possibility of a series of releases..enhancements..etc.  So this drama looks to be playing out for awhile yet.

Hey I like your "bug" ..I figure someone may slap their monitor..before realizing.. hehe cute lil guy..

I wish I knew, I'd start a bug collection.  I stole this one off of imageshack.  It's funny.  At first glance it really does look like a bug on the screen.  I'm notorious for getting out a kleenex and giving the screen a gentle push with my index finger wrapped in kleenex when I see one of these on the screen.

Anyway, like you said Max, you get to a point and then you're done.  You see I never encountered that problem in SimCity 4, even when the entire map was as full as I was going to make it in SimCity 4, it still felt to me like there was a game behind there somewhere.  I was constantly on the look out for how to improve the cities demands and or finances.  It is what is seriously needed in SimCity: Societies in my opinion.  More to do in the game besides plopping buildings would be in order.  It truly does feel like a sandbox, that can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on how you want to look at it.

I think I like that I have the ability to do as I like, but feel that I need more to do.  There are some certain individuals over at the TM forum cooing about how complex the game is and to be honest, I just don't see this complexity in anything that is actually beneficial in knowledge or gameplay to the gamer.  I wish it were otherwise, for then there would be a deeper simulation there, but IF TM keeps up on this one (can anyone say what happened to the Caesar IV Online?, Have they produced another map for the online portion in the past 6 or 10 months?), but I suppose IF TM keeps up on the game and really does add to it, instead of only patching up bugs that they coded into it in the first place, then they have the opportunity to add in some more depth, and please God, something, anything, to do that makes the gamer feel that the game is more than just plopping buildings down, because that's what it feels like to me.  Don't get me wrong, I still play it from time to time briefly, but I grow tired of knowing there is nothing to stand in my way.  No matter how I build, as long as I ofset any negatives with decorations everything will work out perfectly, it's kind of like a spreadsheet game, you make sure that Column A and B balance out (residents/jobs) and you balance columns D, E, F, G, H (the synergies) until they are all in the green or close to it. And you make sure that your total Row/Column is still showing in the green (finances).  The only creative bit in there is where to plop the buildings.  But strangely enough it does have a certain adictive quality to it, it's like some of the Armchair General RTS games that I've played, they lack any real depth but they keep you coming back for more, but once you've conquered the enemy there is naught to do, which is like SimCity: Societies, once I've gotten to a certain building stage with the city, theres nothing left to do but start over, and I HATE starting over in games.

My typical game goes something like this:

1   Plop down a bit of road to the landscape.
2   Go to the furthest corner of the map and plop the hydrogen or some other power plant, in the case of the hydro plant, it looks out of place amongst the city so it goes into a corner, in the case of the polluters, it just keeps the pollution away.
3   Plop a few business's.
4   Plop enough residences to fill up all the employee slots in the city.
5   Plop enough venues to keep the inhabitants of my city pleased.
6   Plop enough decorations to offset the costs of any A) Business's, B) Residential, C) Venues, Plop liberally or as required until there are no more synergies in the red.  If the synergies are too far down in the red, go to the Junk Pile in the corner of the map and plop more decorations down over there.
7  GOTO LINE 1.

Anyway, perhaps the "big" update will also release a way for modders to start adding their own buildings to the game, that would be great.  What would be even better is if they could have come up with a way to convert the buildings from SimCity 4 over to SimCity: Societies, then all those buildings done prior would only need to go through a conversion process to get them into SimCity: Societies.  Never say Never, right? But never hold your breath for it either!
