Yeah, I know theres no way that a flight simulator game fits into a city building game BUT.....

There are cities in the flight simulator though I can't build any buildings.

So, because of that, and because I enjoy Flight Sims, and know that at least one other member here does, I've created this Flight Simulator Games category to talk about it instead of clogging up the other forums with our pilot gibberish.

nothing better than flight sims, considering I have more money in flights sims than anything else, even though for me it is with Fs9 as a base, but good topic none the less :D

I'm still attempting to tweak FSX. Some screenshots that I've seen over the last 6mo to a year have shown some really really detailed cities and airports. I fail to see it in my game. Many buildings just look like generic boxes. When I look down from the piper cub to the ground, I see some 3d houses and some just landscape texture houses (drawn), and here I was expecting full blown cities underneath me with proper streets etc.

I flew out of Palm Springs to LAX and decided I didn't have time to actually do it (real life work) and turned around figuring I'd crash my plane into my parents house, when I got down near to the ground all the streets are like dirt roads in SimCity: Societies.

I may still load back up FS9 and refresh my memory how it looked because I may just be thinking it looked as good as FSX does, when maybe it was more sparse.

Do you fly with a joystick or a yoke? Which one if either?

I have a yoke and rudder pedals (both by CH Products), I also own track IR 4 which simulates head movement and I fly only virtual cockpit. All together that runs in excess of $400, but I love flying and when I can't be in the real air, I like to take up the sim world as realisticly as possible, but I also like the eye candy that comes with Flight Sim over XFlight.

I also have quite a bit of addons for Fs9 such as Active Sky and Ground Environment Pro, so mine looks pretty nice, and have no desire to upgrade and spend all that money again.
(including addon aircraft, its an expenisve game, lol).

If I can find any good screenshots, or take any, I will upload them...

If you are interested Lukla by aerosoft is a fun airport if you get back into Fs9, only sloped runway in the game, and is an amaingly fun approach, I did it online with some people from the fspassengers forum: http://www.youtube.com/v/o94Z8H2si0M&rel=1

Also just becuase I like to brag:
http://i41.photobucket.com/player.swf?file=http://vid41.photobucket.com/albums/e284/crowebird/MichaelCroweFirstSolo.flv (my first solo flight [landing] :D) with a 10kt direct crosswind.

The big thing for me is multiplayer, and is why I want to go to FSX, considering it is better all around, and Fs9 multi sucks, but Fs9 still does what it needs to and still looks pretty.

Nice solo video. I thought for sure you were going to crash there for a moment Wink

I've been thinking of getting the CH yoke and pedals, and I might ask Sammy for them for this christmas if she's feeling particularly generous this year. But I'd really like to kno more about the IR 4.

Right now I have just the Saitex X52 which is fine for me though I think I'd like to give an actual yoke and pedals a go one day for more real feeling of flying.

One of these days when I have time Im supposed to go visit my step brother in Santa Barbara and start taking pilots lessons as he has a school somewhere up there for private piloting. Oh wait, I think he moved to Bute, Montana, still just the same, just gotta go over there for a extended vacation to get started.

hey I greased that landing, and corrected perfect for the wind gusts thank you :D

As far as Track IR 4: http://www.naturalpoint.com/trackir/

What it does is you put this little device on top of your monitor and wear a hat with vectors on it (there is also an attachment for your headphones). These vectors track your head movement and translate them onto the screen, so for this reason I also fly virtual cockpit.
So for example if you move your head a little to the left, it simulates a complete left head turn, (it tracks x, y, and z axis, pitch, yaw and roll).
It takes a little to get use to, and is expensive, but it makes flying so much better.
Here is a better description: http://www.naturalpoint.com/trackir/02-products/product-how-TrackIR-works.html

oH sHNITZ, that takes nerdism to a whole new level! I love it, that's for me.

Damn you crowebird, now I've got to have one. That just seems so damn cool. And imagine how cool that would be with a 36" or a 52" widescreen monitor, or using 3 giant monitors. That would just be so damn awsome. Im putting that on my xmas list for this year.

Just letting you know I finally got FSX awhile back and I just started to tweak it now that I got some time and bought my first addon (Lukla for FSX, I have the FS2004 version also) My settings are pretty tweaked out, got pretty much full detail 1m mesh, high graphics etc (the game looks great: including 8x aa and 8x anisotropic filtering and other graphical goodies) and it runs 35-45fps, so im happy with the move to FSX, i am simply unhappy with all the money I got to spend in this sim now, Smiley Blink

Congratulations I wouldn't mind knowing what your settings are to try to duplicate them over here and see if I can get somewhat better performance.
