Ohhh Hubby is going to get me a new or updated PC for Christmas!!!

He is NOT a gamer so doen't have a clue on what is the latest and greatest for gaming - I would love to give him some ideas  Laughing

I do not need a new monitor or keyboard - just the "guts".

So if you could get what you REALLY wanted - what would you get?

We would like to keep it under $2000.00....

EGADS I am SOO excited!

Mappam...DON'T LAUGH AT THIS!!!

http://www.alienware.com/product_detail_pages/Aurora_7500/aurora_overview.aspx?syscode=PC-AURORA-7500-R4&subcode=SKU-DEFAULT

Start here, note that you can config yourself and for $2,000, who knows!

The whole site is navigable w/ a ton of different options....remember with these machines you do NOT have to spend a ton and you can get a good machine, particularly if you're NOT buying a monitor...it's at least worth a look!!!

That's a toughy Pam,

I think I'd likely build my own because I don't think any of the HP, e-machines, Dell, Compaq OR ANY of the other mass produced computers are worth $2k, especially if you want one for gaming.

Yeah, I think that putting one together really is the only way to go now adays.  But if that is not an option and for many people it's not.  Then one need only go to either the AMD or the Intel site and see what the latest and greatest CPU is right now, then go to the popular mass production computer sites and start looking to see how much they are getting for a computer with that particular CPU in it for.  If it turns out to be over the limit then of course you have to step down a bit.

My opinion though, is that if you are going to spend 2 grand then you need to make sure it's a computer that will last for a couple years at least to make it worthwhile.

I look at my computer to the right which I built myself (some parts were robbed from the past computer though) and it's proven quite good for gaming overall.

DFI Lanparty UT Expert mainboard (now discontinued for a newer one) : $149
Dual Nvidia 8800GTS OC 320MB Video cards (2 of them) $300-$359/each
2GB RAM: $150.00
AMD 64X2 4600+ CPU: $300.00 (When I bought it, it's probably less now)
Thermaltake 750W Power Supply: $229
Silver case (it is a name brand but I forget what it's called) $79.00
DVD everything drive $79.00
Fans and cabling: $45.00
Total $1631 plus tax.

But I used my existing hard drives, and maybe an old DVD drive too.  Everywhere I could go locally to buy a prebuilt computer maxed them out at the 4000+ or 4200+ AND they only had like 1GB ram and 120GB hard drive etc etc and just wern't worth the money.

Anyway, I don't know of any mass produced computers for under 2k that are really worth the money, perhaps what Pat! linked might be in order.  Granted you are going to pay for the name, but they do for the most part use good hardware in their rigs, or at the very least they are known for that.

I went to the link that Pat posted and after configuring what I would get from them it came out to $2164.00 with free shipping so that's pretty close to the 2k budgeting, of course you could cut down a lot of stuff that I chose for the computer and get it even lower, bt it seemed pretty barebones down below about $1900 to me.

Good luck,

Oh thank you all so much!

Hubby "built" the PC I am using now - but it has become so outdated that some of the newer games are having a hard time with it  Laughing (Or better said - It is having a hard time with some of the newer games).

I will pass this info on to him and then let him talk to his guy at the local "Hardware Store".

I really appreciate the info!

Smiley Blink CB's setup/suggestion appears to be very worthy..and the price is attractive too.

My last two recent builds.. using two nVidia configs for graphics and and a prototype Mobo.  I'll confess I have an excessive amount tied up in my graphic cards... hehe UC likes to tease me about it.

There's no doubt you can have control over selecting more goodies by building your own.. just from the savings from of the "on the shelf" units.  Also getting away from needing to upgrade PSU's and graphics for most "cookie cutter" stock units found at BestBuy for example..you're lucky that you have someone who can do this for you.

I feel confident you'll be able to build a PC that will give you a very positive playing experience.    wink

If you have the ability to build it yourself I would, you can get a better computer for cheaper that way!

But good luck with it!

I have emailed the link (Alienware) and printed out all of the above- for hubby.

He is the Techy in the family - and has build a Home Server Network etc - so this will all mean something to him. He knows the electronic aspects of a PC - just not the basics of gaming or what is the best build for a gaming machine.

He is a military school engineer and I am a (former) beatnik artist  Big Smiley Grin Laughing. Everyone said our marriage was doomed from the start - we fooled them all and over thanksgiving celebrated our 41st anniversary! wink Side note - a divorce looked imminent a few time hanging wallpaper or locating where to hang pictures in the house (he use to get out the tape-measure and slide rule and I would "eye" it)!

Thanks you thank you!
