Now seriously SimCity: Societies seems to me like much better then I thought  Thumbs Up

I haven't played much yet --- bit first impressions --- It seems like a game for me.

And that's a pretty good impression considering I have a Hangover  Big Smiley Grin Laughing

It will be fun to dig into this game!

To be honest, for me it's one of those games that once I force myself to sit down and play it, then I lose track of the time while Im building my city and next thing I know it's dinner time or time to walk the dog or time to go to bed or whatever.  Time passes by when I am building a city.  But... It is one of those games that I have to force myself to start up on my computer, as I don't have that immediate desire to play the game when I have the free time, but once I've done that, it can be a real time killer.  So while that might have come out as sounding negative, it's really not, it's a positive thing that it can hold my attention for a couple hours or more once I've forced myself to start it up.

I think this is one of those games that can only be improved if the modders get into it and start providing different looking buildings, changing around the rules of the game in the xml files etc.  It could add many years to the life of the game if there is enough extra content provided by the gamers themselves.  But, sadly in my opinion, if they don't get behind it, and TM doesn't actually provide a building creation tool or even a plugin for a program such as gmax, then the game does have a limited lifespan on my computer as I do tire eventually of building neighborhoods that all look the same or neighborhoods that all have that california tract home look to them.  i LOVE diversity in my neighborhoods and that's really hard to accomplish when there are usually only 3 looks to any residential building and a limited amount of "extra stuff" that we can use to place outside of the homes like the swing set (which is more for commercial park then someones back yard) or bbq, (definitely need more than one bbq for the backyards, not everybody buys the same brand BBQ).

bUT OVerall, yeah, it's a game that can definitely kill some hours before the gamer even knows it.

I hope you enjoy it, sans the hangover which I had yesterday from having two bourbon and cokes the night before when we went out to Leons for dinner.  Something I never do since we don't usually go out to restaurants where you have enough time to kill and are fancy enough to actually have a full bar when it's just Sammy and myself, but my folks turned us onto Leons and if someone vists Palm Springs and wants an excellent steak, and a super excellent bowl (or should I say, a cup) of New England clam chowder using only the freshest of cream and freshest of clams, then Leon's is the place to go, even though the inside looks rather like a golf club restaurant (which it is actually now that I think about it, hehehe).

Anyway, another wall of text down, just to say, I hope you enjoy it.

CityBuilder, I agree practically to everything you said in your post...  I sit at the computer during the evening, and try to decide which game to start up, and I have a lot to choose from...  I practically have to force myself to start up SimCity: Societies, since it's the newest and most open of them, and once I do I spend hours in it without realizing it.

But I too have hit a ceiling on it.  Building a city takes very little time, and once the city itself is built, there's no long term plans or "play" for that specific city anymore.  They're all very short lived.  So I start a new city, and damn if it doesn't look just like the city I  just finished building.

Oh sure, you have complete control over the layouts, and with custom heightmaps, the environment itself.  But once you've started placing buildings, and zoom into a street view, it's got the same buildings on it as the last three cities I've built.  Even with different venues, it all still seems to look the same as any other city I've built.

I enjoy the openess and creative aspects of the game, but it's all very repetitive for me now.  After trying out Settlers 6, I was thinking some kind of economic functionality, manufacturing and trade goods could lengthen the life span of an SimCity: Societies city, and given Tilted Mills' history with CotN and Caesar IV, I think it'd be a good fit in SimCity: Societies.

I agree, and tha'ts pretty much what I was trying to get out with my topic asking why we start so many new cities instead of sticking to just one city.  Once it's built, it's done, game over, what is left to do?  It's like the end game has been left out of SimCity: Societies since there is little to do but zoom down to the street and watch the same animations and same interactions between the peeps down on the street.

Still.... I can idle away the hours in SimCity: Societies once I get up the gumption to get it started.  But I'd surely like more to do down there, than what is currently available, however having multitudes of new buildings created by otheres or TM themselves would help in that I could microscopically build my city down to the last building, but when it all looks the same then I see little point to building a new city again.  Still... I can idle away the hours in SimCity: Societies for now.  Without new buildings coming soon I honestly don't know how long I can continue to force myself to load up the game when I have the opportunity to play so many other games here.

Well the game is better then I thought it would be !!

It's translated to Swedish, and that feels a bit strange because I'm used to play almost all games in English  Laughing

My first city --- well don't know if it is a city, but I'm learning.

It is indeed fun, and I find it very relaxing.  A lot of games are clickfests, buttonmashers, or so heavily inundated with having to think, that a nice relaxing game is refreshing.  But unfortunately, I find myself wanting more to do in it... But all in all, I certainly don't regret getting it, and I will continue to build cities, but I don't think I'll be spending nearly as much time in it as I was a week ago.

UC Glad you finally caved in and bought it.Big Smiley Grin Laughing
I was like that, I swore I wouldn't buy the game without trying the demo first, but I bought it and I'm glad I did now, it's a lot better than I thought it would be, I was nervously waiting for it to morph into TCNY but thankfully it didn't, it would be really great if there were trading implemented, something like I buy stuff from a warehouse and sell to the eateries and shops you get the gist, but for the moment it suits me fine, and more to the point it's not hard to play Big Smiley Grin Laughing
