Okay - these may be Basic Questions  Laughing and in No Order:

# Do you have to use ALL of the same City Type (Small Town, Romantic, Industrial) buildings for the game to Progress? Or can you use one or two of a different type but use Mostly the original? Example = say I build a Small Town but add one condo complex from Cyberpunk.

# Once the city has Advanced - can you now use Mix & Match buildings (from other Types) to get trophies?

# If I start a city in Free Play mode - AND stick with only one type (Small Town) will the city Advance like in Normal mode?

I want to make a Small Mid-Western Farming community - but I want some of the Victorian Houses when I start this town. I also want the ability to add some condo type buildings as they add more people than the individual houses.

For your first question: not necessarily but mostly...What i mean is that each building has scores toward one or more themes.  Buildings that have positive score for the theme Romantic, for example, will help to attain the threshold for modification...and those that has negative scores will do the contrary.
For example, a cathedral for a Romantic city add 25 points to your total, but a Water Park will substract 20 points... for a total gain of 5 points toward the threshold.

So it becomes a matter of  choice..and a bit of luck also because the game doesn't give you these scores. If you stick only to the buildings related to one theme..I'll be easier and faster to have upgrades...but it won't give you necessarily the type of city you want to build.

I'll try to find answers for your other questions.

Those points are in the Prima guide.

As for your project,  the Condo have a score of -5 (Small city), the Victorian houses have 0 and the Tudor houses have +6. So you're better off with Tudor.and if you had more Tudor than Condo, you'll progress toward your goal.

As for your other questions. i'm sorry but  can't help you on that: i personnaly do not care for trophies..and i do not try to get them..i just want to make beautiful cities...and i never payed Free mode..so i couldn't tell

Zorba is correct about the "point" system.
When I built fun city it advanced, but when I added XX non-fun city buildings it reverted back. Then after adding more fun city buildings it advanced again.
The Prima people must have found the values in the coding somewhere. Sure wish we knew where to look.  Agreed Happy

Thanks guys!!

I looked for the Prima Guide - and nobody in the area has any! My local Gamestop/EB said they 'think' it is an online only item - go figure!

I wanted the Victorian Houses for the LOOK only - in most of the (real) Small Farming Mid-Western towns - the "old" section features the Queen Ann/Victorian look. Tudor may be added later to some areas but not in the original town.

I may be able to use "farmhouse" look as a sub??

Zorba, I gave you some positive karma for being so helpful.  Agreed Happy

Is the Prima guide really helpful  Questioning
I guess we'll have to download it, if it's printable.

How is the weather up there in Canada  Questioning
I live in Oregon, east of the Cascades, so it gets pretty cold here. 6 degrees the other night, but it has warmed up  Looking around cautiously some now to a little above freezing.

Thanks very much Tazz..i appreciate it . I'm glad if i can help a little bit because the more i play this game, the more i find that it has a lot of subtleties in it.

As for the guide..it's is printable : there is an option to print it, though it's kind of large (191 pages...with lots of drawings and photos). I prefer to consult it once in a while when i need to find something. I find it very useful, at least to steer a city , at the beginning, toward the theme that i want to develop by listing the most favorable buildings to use and those not to use.  I do not follow it blindly though because it will not give me the look that i want.

As for the weather here, at 2pm eastern time...we are in mid of a huge snow storm...when i woke up this morning..we already had receive 35 cm of snow (around 15 inches ) and it is not over yet.  But it's not to cold outside...around -3 C....end of weather report... Laughing

Have a nice day, and once again, thanks for your kind words.
