Just leaving the house now - so thought I would ask - anything I should know when I get back with my New Game?

Any hints or tips for starting a new game (city)?
Any 'stuff' you have found while playing that you would like to have known before you started.

You get the idea - I can read your thoughts/ideas/hints etc while my Sim City Societies game is loading (and patching).

Great Cruise BTW - but glad to be home and in front of my PC - Geeesh does that tell you something about my life  Laughing

Mappam, welcome back!!!

* For societies...PLAY THE TUTORIAL AND THROW EVERYTHING YOU KNOW ABOUT SimCity 4 away.

* It's a completely different game, completely different dynamic.

* PLAN AHEAD for city centers featuring what will be some stunning buildings that get unlocked later....

* Remember that the VENUES give you happy sims and workplaces give you $$$.

* Put it on slow motion and stroll around your city w/ TILTED VISION (freecam)...it's stunning...

* Click on your sims!

* Consider each username you use as a campaign, i.e., think about trying to get your trophies and awards under one username and then under another, doing things differently!

* Definitely utilize the advanced settings menu on the random map generator.

* Take the time to get to know your city!

* Perhaps have a pre-conceived 'back story' in mind as you begin the process of laying out a town.

* IF you want to avoid pollution, always go with the hydrogen power plant...great wattage, zero pollution!

*IF you want pollution (to get that dingy industrial city look) then COAL IT UP BABY!!

*A great way to add production is to give each house you plant a BBQ pit!!

* Prepare to be addicted, because I can't STOP coming up w/ new city ideas!

That's all I can think of right now!

later,
pat!

No problem cat!  Heck, there are probably a zillion ways to approach this game, it's the ultimate in open ended because you really do have the ability to set your own inner-goals for what you want to accomplish!  That list is just kind of the way I approach it!

Thank you SOOOO much Pat!

I loaded the game and did the tutorial. I didn't like the city that was used in the tutorial so I did start a new one - in freestyle.

I found that I couldn't get a town looking like a small turn-of-the-century  - too many buildings that look like Asian or modern type. I will go back to this city later - after I play around with everything a little more.

I am about to start another one in the "normal" game and try that.

I am finding that STARTING is hard! Where to lay down the first road? How to add roads so that later in the game I don't have too many or not enough  Looking around cautiously Where to do Main Street........ etc

I downloaded the mod pack from ThatGuy (??) and the one(s) from the SimSocieties main site = exchange - but how are you guys getting them to be ROADS? I can lay down these textures (driveways or walkways etc) but only have the two original actual road surfaces (dirt and street).

Okay - off to play around with it all a little more - thanks again!

Mappam...there's a roads section, just to the left of paintable icons, that you can lay roads...then later in your city's development, the roads will ALTER and change based on the societal feel of your city!

I find it easiest if there is a river on the map (and I try to make sure there always is) that I start my first road as a bridge over the river.  I generally now leave a large space somewhere towards the middle of the map that will eventually, hopefully be my downtown area.

In the beginning don't try to limit yourself to only one type of town buildings you may find it too limiting, I know I did.  Just mish mosh what you think looks good into your city, you might want an area of south western design with the haciendas and other adobe buildings in one area of your city and you may want row houses down near the coast.

Just remember it's a bulding by building game so you need to try to keep it balanced with residences and workplaces and throw in some venues to keep everybody happy.  If you go hogwild building homes but not enough business's then you'll go tilt and have to delete homes to recoop some money to start building business's so that you can get some money coming in unless of course you manage to build all tract mansions since they provide 50 simoleans a month or whatever time period the game uses.

Enjoy.

Thanks CB - I will try a city with a bridge and mix-match of different building 'styles' and see if I can get something that will progress to the next road styles and designs.

Pat - thanks! I never thought about the progress of different roads!

Has anyone found a mod or cheat that will unlock these road (altered) types yet??

I think there may be one out there, but honestly, it takes some of that 'WHOA! AWESOME!' feeling you get when the roads alter themselves...plus, I always use that moment as my cue to really take a look around at my city to see what else has changed!

Just a thought!
