This looks interesting.  Anyone know if it's available as a downloadable purchase anywhere?

Thanks Pat, I'm in Australia.  Unfortunately neither Amazon UK and US will ship video games here.  I'll have a look at some auction sites.  Otherwise maybe I could pay someone from the UK or US to send it over here.  But I'll try the demo first anyway.

Just for Fun !

Embraced by the historical landscape of medieval Europe at the time of the Hundred Years War (1337-1457; England & France), the player takes on the role of a brave hero setting out to experience an exciting fictitious story packed with treachery, betrayal, battles and ambushes.

While bad-tempered neighbors and bloodthirsty robber knights are lurking everywhere around the deep, dark forests of Central Europe, the player also needs to tend to various vital tasks such as building castles and fortifications, taking enemy strong-holds by assault, smoking out bandit camps, fighting glorious battles and last, but not least, rescuing lovely maidens from the hands of crude barbarians.  Laughing

Knight Formation: The sophisticated tactical options featured in Castle Strike are complemented by knight formations providing for additional special abilities that are triggered upon the assignment of a hero to regular formations. In addition the unit strength is significantly influenced by resting times, weather conditions, altitude, armor upgrades and experience levels. [Is this 'formation' or 'formulation' ? As in making up an individual character (formulation) or making up a battlefield unit of several individuals (formation).]

Combatants: Further to the assignment of a hero featuring particular special abilities, the player may also select one of three nations (Germany, England and France) with each of them offering 18 quite different unit types for combat: Melee fighters carrying swords, axes or spears; ranged combatants using bows, crossbows or arquebusiers; bomb-planting saboteurs [anachronism alert], sappers and, of course, fully armored knights and their proud [horny] warhorses. [They no doubt left out the tactic of running a herd of mares in heat past the knights so their stallion mounts would follow their real interests.]

Automatic Labour Organisation: In order to cope with the tactical challenges of Castle Strike, the organisation of the players work force can be managed very easily: Clicking two buttons will turn a nation's workers into builders (for automatic building, repair and/or fire extinguishing) or collectors (responsible for gathering resources [AKA foraging or looting]) respectively. Both resource production as well as labor organization for the most part can be handled by either moving a slider or placing direct orders.

Castles: As soon as sufficient resources are available, the player can start building a massive castle. The keep and the military installations inside should be protected by upgradeable walls that are both passable and climbable. Heavy artillery placed within the castle towers will help repel hostile attacks. Additional enhanced defense measures can be implemented after extensive research.

Pattern System: The Pattern System is a unique feature to Castle Strike and was specifically designed for this game. It enables the player to carefully plan each phase of construction well in advance before actually erecting the castle, thereby avoiding the waste of resources due to badly designed fortifications. There are more than 25 historical economic and military buildings available for each nation.

Siege Armoury: The siege armory comprises impressive towers, rams, ballistae, catapults, mortars, trebuchets, cannons (e.g. the Hollow Hanna) and many more. All of these weapons must be operated by the player's own army. If left unattended or abandoned, the enemy may seize this kind of weaponry.

Random Generator: By use of the random generator the player may create new single player and multiplayer maps for up to six human or AI players.

Historical uniforms, armoury, landscapes and siege weaponry, stylish medieval buildings, an intriguing (fictitious) story stretching out over 30 varied missions, realistically animated and highly detailed units, a freely moveable and zoomable camera and a stunning selection of tactical and strategic options --- all of these features make Castle Strike stand out as an absorbing game experience for up to six players (in multiplayer mode).

Oh! I see

I really enjoyed playing Castle Strike...nice music, good campaign, armies with formations and intelligent allocation of workers. Defenitely worth to play. The only downside to me is that the story isn't very historical. It is set in an historical background but the heroes are fictional.

1701's production had started with Sunflowers. The original game was released as a Sunflowers product. It's only the addon that has been released by Ubisoft.

Cheers

Was this the one that advertised on the box .... AND COWS
??

There was one castle siege type of game that was sort of tongue in cheek about loading up cows in the catapults and shooting them over the walls that was supposed to get the gamers interested.

No, that was ... I believe, Stronghold, (or SH2) because you could launch the cows on your catapults!
