I'm looking forward to getting Settlers: Rise of an Empire, but it occurred to me that I once tried Settlers (I forget which one). I couldn't run it and had to take it back to the store. The reason -- it comes on DVD, and I don't have a DVD player. So today I ordered a DVD drive for my rig (all of $18), and thought, I'll look at Newegg's games while I'm at it. They have Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 for $6.99, so I jumped on it.

I guess if I can't get to Disneyland, Disneyland will come to me!  Agreed Happy

Has anyone played Roller Coaster Tycoon III? I understand it's pretty good (scored 8+ at Gamespot). I hope this turns out to be fun. I been considering it for some time.

I'm currently using a writemaster external USB DVD drive that does everything, including readng and or writing to Dual Layer discs.  My next DVD will be one of those blueray drives when they become affordable as I understand a blueray disc will hold something like 50GB of information.  All they need to do is make it as fast as a hard drive and they've got a winner for certain.  Though the chances of that happening are slim and none, the DVD will just shred inside the drive I think.

Anyway, YES I played RCT3 and have all of the expansion packs for it as well.  The one thing that still sticks out in my mind is poor performance on somewhat quality settings when the park gets medium to large in size.

There was a lot of controvercy back in the day when RCT3 was in it's prime from the developers saying something like they could run a park with over 100,000 peeps in it without a problem.  My numbers might be off but it was a huge amount of people.  What it turned out to be wasn't that they were running a park with that large amount of people but rather they had confined that many peeps to a section on their screen and were still getting supposedly acceptable performance while the gamers were coming to a crawl with a medium sized park.

But, other than that, I had a pretty good time with RCT3, more so with RCT3 than with any of the expansion packs, but if they all come on sale near you and you like RCT3 then they are worth picking up.

I haven't tried RCT3 since I've gotten bought the dual Nvidia 8800GTS video cards so for all I know it may run tops now.

Have fun, overall if you don't suffer from any performance issues it's a fun game and can be quite addictive building your own coasters in the coaster designer part of the game and I almost always enjoyed being in the building blueprint area of the game and designing my own custom buildings to place in the game.

On the other hand, if you own an xBox, then steer clear of anything coaster.  The game name I don't recall off the top of my head but it's made by the developers of RCT3 (Frontiers) and runs on the Xbox and sucks royally.  But then again, don't all console games really suck to a hardcore PC player Laughing

Have fun,

Hmmm... I wonder if I did the right thing. There's Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 Gold, that comes with an expansion (Splash) that's available for $19.99. But being the cheapskate I am, I didn't wanna part with that much money.  RCT3 is gonna be just a bonus for me. I'm gonna plunk my money down on Settlers: Rise of an Empire.

This drive I bought is not a burner. I figgered I got a CD burner, and that's all I need. I can get over an hour's worth of music on one CD, and two hours would be too much. I don't burn movies, and don't want to either. They're cheap enough to purchase if you don't buy a lot of 'em. I'm picky, so there's only a few that I want to buy.

At any rate, this one is a Lite-On. I hope it's a good one. I'm a little suspicious 'cause it's so cheap, but then CD RW drives aren't very expensive either, and they perform pretty good. And I'll be prepared for Settlers if it's only available on DVD, which I suspect is the case.

Yeah you did the right thing.  For $9.99 you really can't go wrong on the original RCT3.  But it's really one of those games to me that people either love it or hate it.  I know far too many Coaster enthusiasts that love these games and about as many if not more that think coaster riding and building is the epitomy of geekdom.  Doesn't matter to me...

For 10 dollars, you should easily get a lot more entertainment hours out of it then you could any other form of payed entertainment.

$10.00 barely if at all pays to go see one movie that lasts 1.5 hours.  So if you get more than 1.5 hours of playtime in RCT3 you're already ahead of the scale.

Well, I'll be a monkey's uncle! (already am)

I mistakenly ordered a CD. WHen I got a confirmation email of my order, it said CD on it, so double checked and sure enough I screwed up, and ordered a CD outta my wish list instead of the DVD (don't ask how I got both in there).  So I contacted Newegg and told of my mistake and asked for a RMA number. They have replied and said they will refund the purchase price but I don't have to return the CD player. So, I'm a bit amazed! Erm... kinda dumb founded.

Well, that's pretty good service, eh? I screwed up, and the give me this for free. You can't beat that!

I feel a deer in headlights.... dazed and confused. So, I guess my duty is to tell you people that Newegg is a good place to shop. This is where I bought my rig, and boy! I really like it! I got an excellent price on it, then made a mistake and ordered the wrong part and they're letting me keep it. Can't beat that! SHOP THERE!

Anyways, this stuff should be here by Wednesday I think. Oh! And Roller Coaster Tycoon was NOT 9.99. It was 6.99!

And I dunno about getting the DVD player now, afterr discovering that the price of Settlers is $50. I think I'll wait on both the DVD player and Settlers until Settlers' price drops.

Oh well.  Roller Coaster T3 is probably gonna be fun. It'll keep me satisfied while I'm waiiting for a price drop on Settlers. At least it's something different, and perhaps I'll like it more than I expect to.

Well, at $6.99 then you're even further ahead of the scale of enjoyment for fun vrs money and entertainment.

Yes I've shopped Newegg before and have gotten a couple seemingly good deals from them.  I havn't visited them in a while though.  Last time that I ordered from them I order up a UPS for my computer and they sent it to me in working order but minus the usb cable, so I contacted them and they said they would send out the USB cable.  The package arrived at my doorstep and weighed about 40lbs, I thought at the time, that seems awfully heavy for a USB cable, i opened it up to my great surpise to see a new UPS.  So they sent me a completely new UPS and this one was missing the USB cable too.  I called the mfg's and they sent me out 2 USB cables for free.

So for the price of one UPS, I got 2 UPS's and 2 free usb cables.  That was a great deal if you ask me a %50 off sale. Laughing

Oh wow!  Big Smiley Grin Laughing Roller Coaster Tycoon is a real hoot!  Laughing

I've only glanced at it so far, and run the tutorials. Holy mackeral! There's a lot to learn!  Not being the brightest light on the Christmas tree when reading directions, it's taken me over an hour to do these tutorials.  I tried a little sandbox mode, but my brain is already fried!  But, I am truly delighted.  Agreed Happy   Oh my! You can even make your own fireworks shows!

Big Smiley Grin Laughing Agreed Happy Laughing

I think I did screw up though. I shoulda bought the Gold Edition, which has Splash! But, I've already got my hands full! It's gonna be fun, but it's also gonna be mentally taxing! There is a lot going on in this! A hella lot more than I expected!

I don't even know if I'll ever get past sandbox mode!  Laughing Building is gonna be fun fun fun! But managing the park is gonna be tough, fer sure!

I can't stop laughing! This is so fun already, and I haven't even gotten started!  Sheesh! You can even put costumes on strolling entertainers, and mix and match their heads and bodies!   Big Smiley Grin Laughing

WOOT!   Big Smiley Grin Laughing I shoulda not hesitated, and bought a lot earlier.

All RCT games to me have always been about sandbox mode.  The scenarios never interested me, I like to make my own goals and have at it.  You should try to make a bowling coaster of death sometime, that's a hoot to watch.

Basically you place only a single tile path into the park, then build a coaster next to the path and have it end where it's last rail piece comes down right at the only path in the park.  Then open the park and let people come in, then put the coaster into test mode I believe, and watch as the coast car comes off the track at the end and bowls down all the people on the path.  The one downside to RCT3 is that peeps don't die.  In the RCT2, I used to pickup peeps and throw them into a lake to drown them to stop them from complaining.

Looking around cautiously  Aww CB..that's is almost as bad as me..when I use to turn the Lions and Tigers loose in Zoo Tycoon.  Good way to clear the customers out when they complained too much about not having enough restrooms... problem solved.   hehe  Laughing

Well I think  in some special cases it Depends on how you approach a game.. I don't really enjoy creating misery for my lil peeps..I'm a euphorical CBer at heart.   Smiley Blink
