I've been trying to figure out what it is that I've felt has been missing from the forum and I finally figured it out.  On the CivCity: Rome forums we had the ability to do a quick reply, at the bottom of any message thread page there was a quick reply box that allowed us to type in quick messages to post to the thread.  While it doesn't show all the features like smilies, and the text formating options right there, they are still allowed to be posted if you know the codes to use (example [ b] would [/ b] would bold the text between the tags etc etc etc and [ laugh] would produce Laughing etc etc etc.  Well, they work if you remove the blank spaces that I put in just to show the examples Big Smiley Grin Laughing)

So, I've finally managed to add it back in, so the quick reply box should now be shown at the bottom of each page in the forum (message thread pages, not the index pages) for your use.  If you're anything like me, you'll likely find it quite usefull to do those quick replies as well as faster to post your message on those days when for one reason or another our website host is keeping us moving along at a snails pace due to them overloading the servers with other users.

To use this feature, click on the profile link at the top of any page here at CBG, then choose look and layout preferences, scroll down the list and choose one of the three options in the dropdown selection.  They are: "dont show at all", "show, off by default", "show, on by default"

Obviously, the don't show at all, will remove it entirely from the forum (for you), the show, off by default, will mean that it's there but it's been minimized and you'll have to exand the box if you want to use it (on every post that you wish to use it on) and of course, show, on by default will mean that it's expanded and available on every page and you'd have to minimize it with the right arrow icon to minimize it for that page.
Hope you enjoy.

Well, I just found one of the pitfalls of it, when you click the "quote" option to a message it inserts the quote in the quick reply box instead of taking you to the usual page that we have become accustomed to with the quote inserted.  This would obviously be a problem for those people that make liberal use of text formatting and smilies and what not else that is available on the full reply page.  However hitting "reply" still takes people to the usual reply page that has all the usual formating and smilie stuff.  I'll have to see if that can be changed so that when someone clicks quote it still inserts it into the regular reply window instead of the quick reply or weigh the benefit of having the quick reply box there.  Maybe if there is a way to turn it off for individuals it may not be too bad.

A work around however, is to change your profile and in the "look and layout preferences" of your profile area, you can choose "Show, off by default" and this should minimize the quick reply feature so the "quote" function of the message thread should WILL work in the old fashion.

Then if you want to use the quick reply function, simply press the right arrow icon next to the quick reply area (or click on the words "quick reply" that has the right arrow icon next to it and it will open up the quick reply box for easy quick replying to messages.

One thing to keep in mind is that for some odd reason, if you have your option set to "show, on by default" it will always show expanded on every message thread, so minimizing it by pressing the icon next to the words quick reply will only minimize it for the page you are currently on, the next page will have it expanded again.  So for most people I suggest that they use the option of "Show, off by default" and then use it at will.

Smiley Blink  Mm?  Must be the way I have my profile setup..as I don't "see" any Quick reply icons..is it somewhere within the normal Reply options..?

It's not an issue with me..I'll most likely use what I am use to..and speed is not my forte anyway.   Laughing

Yeah, I think you have to go to your profile page, then the link that says, look and layout preference then down near to the bottom of the page is the drop down selection option that will allow you to turn it on for you specifically.
