Well, I trashed my AMD 64 3500+ when I moved around some more hard drives today and I had to remove the CPU to move a couple hard drives.

When trying to put it back in place (the CPU) it didn't seem to fit quite right and I kept trying, and adjusting it until I thought it was fitting properly.  So  I mounted up the heatsink and fired up the computer only to have nothing happen.

I pulled the heatsink back off and the CPU came off with it (as it's always done) and I looked at the CPU and found about 30 to 50 or more of the little tiny pins bent flat against the cpu.

I attempted to straighten them out but finally gave up after getting nowhere for 30 minutes without straightening even one little pin.

So I made some calls to anywhere and everywhere locally to find a new cpu and nobody had one stinkin' cpu that would fit in my computer.  I finally found a PC-Club that is about 60 miles away from here that had a couple that would fit my computer so I made the drive because heck, I can't be without my computer even for 1 day and tommorrow being monday, I have work to do that I can't do on my linux box.

So I made the 60 mile drive in about 45 minutes (no traffic) and had intended to get the AMD 64 dual Core 4200+ but when I started to ask questions there, the clerk told me that the DC 4200+ ran at the same speed as my 3500+ and that while I would benefit from the Dual core (DC), it would still be running at the same MHz, so I spent an extra 60.00 and moved it up a notch to the AMD 64 Dual Core 4600+, and I would probably have purchased the 4800 if it had been available and in stock, but it wasn't.

So after futsing around trying to get the computer to run after putting in the new CPU, I finally got it going (turned out that I had dislodged a stick or two of the ram, so I removed 2GB of ram and tried to reboot and this time it booted up fine, so I put back in the 2GB and it booted up okay as well, so now I've got my 4GB back in and working, however I dont think that windows take full advantage of the 4gb because it only reports 3GB.  But thats no big deal.

Anyway, so now my computer is a AMD 64X2 4600+ / 4GB RAM / ATi X1900GT and multiple hard drives in fact Im zipping up a HDD right now so that I can transfer it to another HDD so that I can pull out a couple of the smaller drives and replace them with the larger drives that I bought a while back.

Anyway, I do notice a definate improvement in windows and it's applications with the dual core for certain, for exmaple Im zipping up 50GB of data right now and writing this at the same time without so much as a hiccup so Im rather pleased by this upgrade even though it was an unexpected outlay of close to 300.00

Sorry to hear about your hardware problems. I can relate to that.  Big nasty pile of Poop  You were fortunate to be able to find something on a Sunday. They roll up the sidewalks in town around here on Sunday (NO SIDEWALKS in our village) except for WalMart, and of course they don't carry stuff like that (at least not here).
All that taking apart and putting together must have been really hard on your wrists! I hope they are doing better now, with the software helping out with the typing.

They feel okay this morning, but that might just be the normal pain pills that the doctor prescribed to me  Looking around cautiously

But Im also trying to type much slower than I usually do.  I generally type at over 90 words per minute with an error ratio of about 0.6 (at least that was what I was typing when I interviewed for a job about 5 years ago and I've only improved since then), so by slowing down my typing it seems to put less stress on my wrists.

I only use the voice software when Im home alone because I feel kind of odd talking to my computer when my partner or our roommate is in the house.  My roommate was amazed when he sat in the office and heard me talking to the computer and said the he didn't realize just how much typing I actually do on a daily basis until I started to use the voice software.

Anyway.....  Knowing now the performance of the dual core 4600+ compared to the 3500+ if I were going to layout the 300 clams for a new processor, I probably wouldnt.  Thats not to say that it hasn't improved performance, because it really has, however Im not really sure if it would be worth the average Joe going out and spending 300 dollars to upgrade from a 3500+ to the 64X2 4600+, but from what I've read it's supposedly much better with multi tasking, things like burning music while working is supposed to be smoother and have less errors since one processor can be devoted to the burning and the other core devoted to whatever else you are doing.

I'll have to test it out much more before Im really certain how much of an improvement it makes in every day computer usage.  I need to do much more reading on the subject.  It seems to me that whenever I open up my task manager and am doing something heavy like zipping up that 50GB file yesterday then my CPU usage is around 50% which would really mean that it's at 100% on a single core CPU and then jumps up here and there to 63% or so when I do something else.  However the something else that I do, doesnt get slowed down by the zipping process that is going on, on the first core so that seems a big plus.  But I remember when I had a Pentium 4 hyperthread CPU on an old computer, it also used to report 50% CPU usage but when I did something else it never went above 50% and the something else that I did was usually slowed down to some degree, so Im guessing that hyperthreading and dual cores are not related nor really similar.

I'm sorry about that broken prosessor  Crying

But Congrats on the new one instead !!!

I have the AMD Athlon X2 4400+ and it's been running great since Feb. 2006

I remembered that I downloaded a file for dual core AMD's

It's called  " AMD Dual-Core Optimizer " , I've never used it but have a look here if it might
be somthing you need.

http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/TechnicalResources/0,,30_182_871_9706,00.html

But remember the old saying "If it ain't broke don't try to fix it"

Just make a system restore point, that makes it easy to go back if you don't like it
I always have system restore on for C: partition .....

Good Luck with the new gear !!

Thanks I did install that the day that I installed the new CPU, I was looking for the AMD Dash Panel which is supposed to tell you what temperature your CPU is running at, but it doesnt seem to work right, probably because it's a demo, it keeps telling me that my CPU is running at -11f or -11c, so I know that can't be correct.

Anyway, I downloaded the optimizer as well and installed it for the hell of it.  I don't notice anything different but then again I didnt really give it much of a go before installing it.

Thanks,

I like your new PC Wink Its better than mine. As I know, your X1900 is better than my GeForce 6600GT. So I think you won't have problem if you set most of your games to best settings. As I know, RAM will speed up your game loading time, if you want to play it with better graphic without lagging, I think you need to upgrade your graphic card. Btw, Windows Vista is coming with DX 10 (I think you saw this in TM forum) which is not compatible with most of the cards today. I don't know how is yours, but mine is not compatible with it.

Thanks Smiley Blink
