I've grown quite tired of misplacing my game cds so I've finally done something about it.

Ive just ordered one of these units:  http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1433480&CatId=66

It holds up to 100 cd's and is controlled through your computer and hooked up via the usb port.  It has a windows database that you tell it what cd you are inserting, an existing archived cd or a new cd and it stores that.  When you want a particular CD, you open up the program in windows and tell it to eject the cd(s) that you want and away you go.

My cd's wont be left sitting around on the desk anymore to get scratched and I'll have about 1/3rd of them initially stored at my fingertips for when I want them.

Total cost with shipping $115.00 which really isn't bad considering a simple faux leather binder that holds about 200 cd's locally runs about $35.00 and this is just about as automated as it comes.

This looks really cool   Thumbs Up  kinda like the record selector on the old time juke boxes.  Big Smiley Grin Laughing Big Smiley Grin Laughing

No need for that "no CD in the drive" program (forgot it's name - used it some but sometimes it doesn't work)  either  Agreed Happy

Very very true.  I have no use for Game Jackal and it's no cd stuff when the cd's are available at the touch of a couple buttons on my keyboard and available within arms reach of my desk and chair.  It's going to sit just to the left of me (the air purifier is going to be moved somewhere else in the room), so 1/3rd of all my games will be available in arms reach.  Im really looking forward to getting this and start organizing my collection of most used cds.  I almost started to organize the shelfs today because I can't find my CIV 4 disk 1, so I was going to label the shelves and put everything in alphabetical order but then I decided to buy one of these instead  Laughing

Which site did you use for the reviews?  The reviews that I read were pretty negative from an australian site but most were due to the price and only one said that they had a physical problem with the unit, and a couple of them were complaints because their employees couldn't be bothered to put the CD's back in the right slot when done using them.

Anyway, while I don't put a lot of stock in other peoples reviews I do take notice, so which site did you use for it?

Thanks,

Oh yeah, and I forgot to mention that many peoples complaints seem to stem that they were under the impression that this was not only a storage unit but also a reader like a traditional CD reader so they were disappointed that they paid out $200.00 for the unit and it didn't have a cd drive inside of it.  Maybe this is why the price is now down to $99 instead of the $199 that many people paid.  While it would be nice to have a cd reader inside of the unit, I didn't buy it for that purpose so Im good to go there as all that I want it for is a convienient storage unit that will produce my CD's for me when I wish to use them.  Oh and unless it included a reader/writer inside of it, I'd never pay $200 for the unit.  That to me would just be insane.  But at $99, thats well worth the price to me for something that can store and organize my gaming cd's in a safe enviornment.

 Hello and Welcome CB,

I read the reviews that were posted on the site you gave a link to in your first post on this thread.

Yup, I'll agree there is a fair amount of bad reviews on there site, hopefully these people are constant complainers.  There are also some complaints that I find funny like the following:
Quote
Too big, bulky and ugly. Poor construction. No way to work without the computer on.
The person who reviewed it with this quote, scored the stakka a 2/5 stars.  What gets me is.... How did he expect it to work without the computer being on.  It's plain and simple that it's designed to be used with a computer so that the computer can send the signal to the unit to eject a CD.  I guess he expected some sort of manual operation as well.  I look upon those kinds of reviews with a grain of salt, since their really not reviews persay as much as they are complaints because they got a bad unit.  We all have bought something that was DOA or perhaps didn't function after 2 days (my toaster oven was doa), so as humans we are more apt to complain at any outlet we possibly can.

Anyway, thanks for bringing those to my attention I didn't even see those there when I first looked but instead I went around reading full reviews of the product by product review websites.

I'll let you know how it goes.  They expect it here sometime between Friday and tuesday next week.  Im obviouly hoping for friday.

Wink  That's cool CD case CB... hope it does what you expect to..

A few years back I spent almost a solid week constructing a CD depository.  I keep it in pretty fair order..as I have well over a thousand CD's catalogued...the capacity (?)  maybe another 1000 with the advent of those "slim" jewelcases.  I've never thrown out any CD's..(well except AOL mailers)..I have pre Windows DOS games on CD..I know..I know... sounds ridiculous, but I have "working" era/period PC's that will still play those golden oldie games.. wanna come over a play the original Zork adventure?   hehe  Big Smiley Grin Laughing Yes, I have a working Blazer 286, 386SX, 486DX100, PII/Atlanta 266Mhz, and several other PIII's ..all in sort of a PC museum I've fiddled with as a hobby project.

My only drawback is having this storage component is it is just that..it is connected to you PC.  I prefer not to have more than the (working) essentials plugged into my Desktop.  Make it wireless and I might reconsider..maybe.. Wink
