Is it possible to turn Off the following service in Vista?
"Vista preloads and catches what it thinks I'm going to start"

I hope that is possible cause it smells trouble Big Time....

I have about 13-16 services turned Off in XP, it's things I don't need....
And my XP is running like a dream  Looking around cautiously

I don't recall for certain if it can be turned off but I believe that it can.  Though you'll only notice any performance issues while it's first indexing your system, after that it actually works very well and I wouldn't bother to turn it off.  The part that uses the USB thumbdrives as psuedo RAM isn't all that beneficial in my opinion.  I have/had a 4GB thumbdrive being used for readyboost and didn't notice any difference between when it was there and when it wasn't there.

The thing with the pre cache is that it's held in memory but memory is so fast that it can drop what's there and use the memory for other things faster then you can blink you eyes, so it's really no harm to be there, but I suppose like most non crucial services in windows, you'll be able to turn it off if you like just like you can turn off the indexing service too.  I found there new search functions (which makes use of the indexing) really not all that great as far as I used it.  It brought back tons of emails that I've had as part of the search results when Im looking for information on  a windows vista feature I wanted to get more information on.

It sounds great and I'm kind of looking forward to Vista. I know it's more
pleasent to use when it comes to a nice looking user interface.

But with the inner workings of Vista, I'm a Newbie. It means learning new
things and I'm looking forward to that (kind of tired with XP now)  Smiley Blink

That's the way that I felt when I bought Vista.  Kind of wish I had bought the ultimate version for no other reason then the cool animated desktop backgrounds.  Since I've switched back to XP, I've reloaded my copy of WindowBlinds and remarkably enough my XP looks about 95% just like Vista looks.  Or I can make it look similar to a Mac, possibly even maybe like a linux machine (I'll have to double check that one).  I know that Pat! doesn't like window blinds anymore but for me, it's great to switch the way my OS looks, it just adds a bit of pizazz to my time on the computer.

Wink I've evolved out of pre DOS days.. and have found that OS's just need to be efficient and work well with whatever is thrown at them..I have little use for the eyecandy..just a path to my work and play.  Sadly I'm still waiting..and I wearily take and use whichever one is doing the best job at the time.  I finally succumbed and went on into XP kicking and screaming.. since RAM limits and hardware for Win98SE pushed me out of that once comfort zone... so here I am trying to get the best out of XP... looks like a repeating story.. The way that I look at it, is kind of like I look at our house.  Eventually I get tired of walking into the house and seeing all the furniture in the same exact place, however comforting it is to know that everything is in the same exact spot from when I last left it and I need a change.  I move the sofa to the otherside of the room, put a chair over there a table over here.  Ahhh, I feel much better now that I've moved some furniture around, it's like coming home for the first time all over again.  The same thing happens with an OS.  For someone like myself that stares at a screen for up to 10 hours a day (sometimes more), its just nice to see something change for a while.

Laughing  Mmm?  maybe you should've been an Interior Decorator CB... if it was your natural calling I'm glad you missed it.. Truly nice to have you in your current offering for Life.

I'm not much for switching furniture..the way I look at it is if the arrangement is functional, safe and effectively serves the area.. why change it?  If it is visibly Ugly or something..sure Fix it..or there's a rug everyone is constantly tripping on...change it.  But if everything is smooth as glass, and even if I were blind..I could figure out what and where things were... that has to be to my benefit.

Now I have no qualms with getting new furniture..cool designs that upgrade a living space.  I have to say though, anything that is going to replace what I'm accustom to..has to be really impressive.  I think I have a interconsiousness about home, security, comfort, familiarity..all attached to possessions that have their "place" in every room of house.  Sort of a Haloed respect that I've assigned to items like my Piano.. pictures on my mantle..urn of ashes of my beloved Boxer.  So driven by this type of personality..if someone even thought about rearranging my rooms..I'd better be cold and dead..  Laughing

Ah, but we do have so many other things in common CB... being here on your forums resounds that fact.. and I don't hold anything against your visual "decorative" traits..even OS items like Window's eyecandy stuff.   Big Smiley Grin Laughing
