I contract work with Honda dealerships, and as such have to visit a specific honda webpage that uses Activex extensively.  Well, it use to be that I could open multiple tabs of their webpages (there system is primitive and they prevent right clicks and things like that, so sometimes it's easier to keep a second tab of their site open to do other things since it's not like a multitasking program) and I use to be able to.  Now if I open multiple tabs of their site sure enough I.E. will crash.  But if I open up their site in multiple browser windows then everythings hunky dory.  This is what got me thinking "what's so special about their site that I can't open it up in multiple tabs in I.E. 7.0" and the only thing I could come up with would have to be the activex controls on their site.

Oh, Im not talking about their site as in www.honda.com but rather employees have certain areas of the site to visit that the www guests don't have access to.  It's only started to occur since the last I.E. update and since everything else is simple html, the only last option for the problem would be the activex controls on their pages.

I've been to what I acknowledge as many "questionable" websites (usually looking for no cd cracks etc) and some of them try to install an activex control from microsoft, I don't recall off the top of my head what it was, something about data control, and you can bet I'd never let them install an activex control from a website of questionable content, thankfully I.E. catches that stuff now.  Just like some sites use to try to install "dialer" software that would dialup out of country telephone services (usually adult services) and unbenounced to the computer user their computer would stay connected to these overseas services for hours and hours on end, and the person would be getting charged not only the toll call but also the services fees of xxx per minute.  It's not so prevelant anymore since broadband is the mainstay of the internet now, and many people don't even have a phone line connected to their computers modem anymore.  I know I don't.  My phone line is connected to my printer so that I can fax out of the printer but at one time it use to be connected to the computer so that I could fax directly out of my computer, but now the way things work, is that my computer sends the data to the printer to fax out to the number I need it to go to.

As to UC's question:
Quote
I know too little about web sites and such so can somebody enlighten me?
I think it's more prevalant in websites that are business oriented websites and that require the user to login to the website as a authenticated user much more than it is for casual websites.  I've got my system setup to ask me before installing any activex component (it's also setup to ask me if I want to install many other things that I would deem to be of questionable material besides just activex components) if the site isn't on my safe list, and I havnt seen a website ask to install an activex component (other than questionable websites) in a long long long LONG time now.

Thanks for the information CB !!

I wonder did you have the same problem with www.honda.com when you was running Vista...

I don't know how much the latest versions of I.E. differ between XP and Vista (if any) ?

I'm running latest I.E. with Vista and can use many tabs without problem.
But as you say the average I-net sites don't use ActiveX that much.

Nope, didn't have any problems with the honda site when I was running vista.  When I went back to XP there were one or two updates for I.E that I installed, it seems from recollection that this type of problem started to occur after one of those updates was installed.

I think they are basically the same other than the code might be optimized for each operating system.

I'm still wondering what web browser is that  Laughing when I.E. opens up.

I've been running Mozilla and Mozilla Firefox for years on XP.

Thought I give I.E. a chance when I'm running Vista now.

So far I.E. have done very good for me, not one crash in 5 weeks...

(and I use Tabbed Browsing allot)

Holy smokes!

I installed and fired up CivCity: Rome on my new rig. The game loads in half the time! Also, I maxed out all the graphic settings -- anistropic filtering at 4x, antialias at 4x, model detail max, ground textures max..... and WOW! This is one gorgeous game!  Now all I gotta do is remember how to play it!

Yup I agree, that's also what I said back when it was first released.  I remember seeing some of the screenshots that some people posted on the CivCity: Rome site and thinking to myself that something is messed up with the forum software and it's compressing the images and making them look like that.  I soon enough found out that some people were running CivCity: Rome on very low quality settings to get better performance where as I had it set to maximum quality and it looked really really nice.

But the funny thing to me is that there are some people that say how wonderful a game looks and then they post a screenshot and it's quite obvious they are running the game with the lowest graphical settings and it looks like shnitzel, but to them it looks really great.  They just don't know any difference until someone else posts a screenshot of what the game looks like at full max settings.  All of a sudden we welcome a new member to "computer upgrading, it's not just a hobby, it's a way of life" club of which Lengo is running for president next year Wink.

Some people would rather have a flashy new sports car, but for myself,  I'd rather have a flashy new computer or at least flashy new components for my computer.  I figure I spend far more time on the computer with real life work and fun, then I ever do in a car.

I ran into a friend of mine that I hadn't seen since our teenage years and he invited me over to his home to meet his wife and have dinner.  My jaw dropped as I arrived at his home to see a beautiful new Jaguar in the driveway of this wonderfuly spacious and grand home, and then saw his computer and how it was so old he was still running Internet Explorer 1.0 on it.  He had never updated it, didn't even know that he could.  And it was funny to me because he was using his computer to run his business which has something to do with the music entertainment industry.  Once I took him out to the store and he bought a new computer he was flabbergasted at how much better it performed.  This was a couple years ago, but I'd bet if I visited him today, that new computer he bought would still be there and there would be a newer jaguar or some other expensive car in his driveway.  So, he'd rather have that flashy new sports car, and I'd rather have the latest and greatest in computer equipment.

Well, different strokes for different folks. If I had my way, I'd have a late model car (2001?), AND this here 'puter. I don't need a fancy car, but mine is over 20 years old now.

After posting this here, I fired up Fraps behind CivCity: Rome.  Zooming in real close with everything on gave me FPS of 9-12. Erm... not so good. But if I zoom out to a comfortable working distance, rates go up to 30+, which is fine. So I backed off the settings some, and zoomed in real close brought FPS up to 12-20.  Not a big improvement, so I'm gonna run it with everything on 'cause it looks so good.

I gotta get my More Harder mod installed. Then I'll be cooking again. Is too easy with default rules. But I had a lotta fun with it! CivCity: Rome still rocks in my book!  Thumbs Up
