Sorry you have to go through this.. *hey!!*.. didn't you have to go through this back during the Holidays..?  Got to find out what's causing this...or you'll be due a whole NEW system since we can afford to lose such a great player..  Hope you get it sorted..so you can "rub it in" with that Guild 2 AddOn.. hehe   Laughing

After all the teasing..I truly am sorry you lost good saves and have to redo all your stuff.  Hang in there.. Sticking Tongue Out

Max....I was on the phone with AW tech for about three hours...we tested and tested and took out memory sticks, did a diag on the hard drive...as far as we can tell, it was Windows...just going 'poop!'  I do push the machine with these games, but who knows...really didn't loose anything but some saves and half a day!  So I'm rebuilt, ready to go..only two games on right now (Guild 2 w/ Add On and SimCity 4)  I'll put two or three games on per day and just ease into it!

Still sucks though!  Nope, the error occurred during Windows startup...so I'm fairly sure its software....

Thumbs Up  Good deal...you're back up and running pat!!!

Hope your trusty Alien keeps on "ticking".. hehe  Smiley Blink

I run maintenance routines more frequently than ever before.  I defrag and clear temp junk often...keep your registry true and sacred..no frivolous entries.  Strange deal with today's software..including Windows.. is that it is inefficiently coded..so requires higher maintenance attention.  Keep this in mind and maybe it will prevent..or at least prolong this from happening.  I haven't had a OS corrupt for a longtime.and I attribute it to a tenacious organized cleansing process I've subscribed to.. course I'm <knocking on wood> as I post.. It's always good to rebuild a system, even though it's a pain in the ass.  My laptop has an illegal version of windows XP on it  Ssssh..... Don't tell anybody.  Well technically it's not illegal but it's my prior version of Xp which Im not supposed to use once I started to use the Vista upgrade on my desktop.

But its been sitting on my laptop for a long long time now, and Im ready to rebuild it using the Windows XP Media center edition that came on the laptop.  On a laptop it's harder for me to protect my data (game saves etc) because theres only one drive, where as on my desktop I keep all data and game saves and what not on a seperate drive then windows is on, so it's relatively easy to just reinstall windows then reinstall the game on top of themselves and be back up and running in about 3 or 4 hours total.

It's a pain, but to me it's worth it to be able to keep my computer running as fast as it possibly can.

I'll probably go out to the local staples office supply store and purchase a USB 100GB hard drive to use with my laptop, in that way I'll have an external hard drive to keep any data that I want to keep from in between installations of windows which is also what I do on my desktop.  On the desktop I copy stuff I want to save to both my other hard drives inside of the desktop unit, as well as to a Maxtor USB external hard drive so that I've got two copies of it.  In general if I don't use the data within 8 months or so, then I erase it to free up some space.

However having one more item to plug into a laptop makes the laptop just a little less portable each time I add a device such as this.  But the external USB 100GB hard drives are as small as a laptop hard drive so it shouldnt be too bad and they run off of the USB power so no extra brick power adapters are necessary.

Im still looking for a really good deal on a second hand laptop with great video chip on it to purchase on ebay but havn't run across anything so far.  The most Im willing to invest in my next laptop will be around $1200.00.  Actually that works out to hoping I can get $600.00 for my existing laptop on ebay and having to put out  $600.00 out of my own pocket.  Though so far the majority of laptops in the $1200 range seem to be no better then my current laptop with regards to the built in video chip.

What someone needs to do is invent a box where we can take a real video card and plug it in, then somehow mate that with our current laptops so that the laptop uses the external video card, this would be a great solution for all those laptops that have crummy built in video chips.

Smiley Blink  Well pat!!   ...being as you say..

..very naive

is a common thing where the registry is involved..and can be a good thing in some cases.. over the years I've learned the massively powerful utilities can be more of a headache than doing the user any real good.

When I noted that you had a "crash" at startup... this in most cases can be an indication that your MBR which discerns where things go next is struggling.  Windows will always take the easy way out and just stall..or error out..or both.  The old adage that any excuse is a good excuse works well in this situation.

So on this premise ..this is how I work my "cleaning" routines.. some folks may have even better procedures, but this works for me, and I think everyone can figure out how to manage these tasks according to their style of PC use.

So to prevent encouraging any readers of this thread to rush out and "sterilize" their registry thus prompting as many problems created by registry cleaners as problems solved.. I suggest using a conservative cleaner.. with Options to recall your previous entries setting (sort of like a "backup").

In my routine I run Spyware detection FIRST.  I use AD-Aware by LavaSoft  If it finds anything, and I have these items removed  THEN I run a registry check for those possible "DEAD" entries.  If Ad Aware hasn't found any thing..I run Spybot Search and Destroy as a double-checker..since definition updates can vary.  You really need to be careful with Spybot.. you need to be able to recognized the difference between what's OK and what is NOT.

Again if I see that Spy-or Malware has been removed..THEN I run the registry cleaner and NOTE whether any dead entries have been removed.

The other situation is where you may be uninstalling old apps ..and generally clearing your PC of items that have a proper Program File listing..which will in turn have registry entries related to them.  Here again you need to make sure these old reg and now orphaned entries are removed.  The Same goes with RE-Installs..where possible DOUBLE reg entries can be made.  I use to have to check for these manually..but some cleaner do detect these and allow the most current entry to remain, and remove the redundant one.

This is a link to the Reg Cleaner I use currently..

Reg Cleaner

I have the Pro version.. but there's is a FREE standard edition to try.

This is an ON-line reg cleaning site.. I've never used it..so maybe check first to see what others have to say about it might be the best approach.

Online Reg Cleaner

This site is suppose to Rate Reg Cleaners..for what it worth, look it over to see if any of these Utilities do what I have suggested..when performing their duties.

Reg Cleaner Comparison Site

Mmm?  Well I never purposely intended this to be a Tech E-File..  Hope this gives some insight on a few routine procedures that may prevent those dreaded BSOD's and such.  Hope this is sort of what you needed to know for the time being pat!!   Smiley Blink

CB and Max:

MOBO Crying  Well, my Motherboard needs replaced....after six hours of troubleshooting w/ the Alienware folks, including me taking out each memory stick one at a time AND Each hard drive one at at time AND each power source (including the big ol' watch battery under the keyboard!), turns out its the BIOS controlloer on my motherboard...

It hurts to go into detail, but suffice it to say, here are some facts:

My Alien gets shipped FedEx ground today to the AW shop where they will replace the motherboard

I'm covered w/ my 3 YR wrte, so no $$ worries

I leave for vacation, a week where all I want to do is game and all I wanted to do was the Guild 2 w/ Add on on June 30.

I am now relegated to a 15 inch Del that's actually my work lappy that BARELY plays The Guild 2!

It's ironic that Max wil actually get to fully enjoy the Guild w/ add on before me Big Smiley Grin Laughing Big Smiley Grin Laughing Big Smiley Grin Laughing

This sucks

....the last point the most!  Well, that and the irony part!

I have my doubts that the Addon will beat out your Mobo replacement...EBgames didn't even show it on their June "delivery" sheet today.  I need to check Target and BestBuy..though they aren't always on the ball either..   We left Coaster's up here in the PacNW..aren't a high priority destination.   I suspect CB will have it before I do.. Wink

I trying to figure out TrainZ 2006.. geez I'm so confused with all the "orders" and menus..I haven't even moved a train yet.  So I joined their community..I could be reading into the next century..finding what I need to ..just play the ...*.... game.   Sticking Tongue Out

Well...my Alien is on its way to Memphis, where AW repairs my lappy (the 7700 get done there w/ two other models)...

I weep...and I'm playing SimCity 4 on a dell!  YIKES!  At least I know that this lappy can play The Guild, but I'm hoping to dig into guild w/ add on during my vacation...kind of self restraint or something...ON MY ALIEN!  Somehow I doubt it will be back...

....I weep....
