I guess I just thought of this because I was looking down at my keyboard that really isn't too old and noticed that the E key is half worn away while no other keys show any signs of wear yet.  It makes me wonder if the E key is used more then any other key on the keyboard.

In this message 19 E's were used
But only 13 A's were used

Hmmmmmmm, it might be a conspiracy of the E-machines people to make us take noteof E-Machines.

Looking around cautiously  Not that many years ago.. I would agree with Sandra.. those were popular keys for PC's that didn't like multitasking.  Plus the games frequently balked at loose knit code.. and lack of RAM..you name it.. ReBooT was the only real option most of the time.

I have a fairly dated Keyboard.. I can see that W.A.S.D keys are worn..the Shift Keys..all most likely from games that required these keys for playing time.  Also..my +,- keys are gone <gasp>  these are the Speed keys for many games..some that I played for literally 100's of hours.

I keep my KB fairly clean..no food, especially popcorn is around it anymore,  I do drink coffee or Tea, but really carefully.  I Air off the top regularly as Dust is always present..and once a year..if the spirit moves me I take it apart and detail clean all the crevasses and contact points..it takes a lot of patience to do this..so I DO have to be in the Mood for it.   Wink

I suppose the vowel letters are the most frequently used in normal composition writing..with the E most likely leading the way. If I could get a Gov Grant..I'd do a study on it.. what do you think CB..?  <giggle>   Big Smiley Grin Laughing

 Thumbs Up

Clean your keyboard? You're joking right?  After a year my keyboard is so manky from dust and dog hair and other gunk that doesn't blow away with those duster air can sprays that I just throw it away and start over.

My only problem now is that the original microsoft ergonomic keyboards are becoming harder to find in new condition and MS has changed the format of the original ones and made all of the new ones smaller, so I only have one left of the original ergo keyboards from them still in new condition so I guess I'll have to work extra hard keeping that one as new for as long as is possible.  But yes, I too used to take apart my ergo keyboard to clean it out, sometimes that worked out okay and other times I would lose some little springy type part and perhaps the space bar wouldn't work after that.

Actually, I put the old keyboards in a pile in the garage to be thrown away and assume that Sammy has done so, but only a couple weeks ago I opened up a very large blue tupperware container to find about 15 keyboards inside that she has been storing instead of throwing away.  Im not sure what she has plans for them for, but it might be interesting to see what she ends up doing with them some day.

Nope..but like I said previously ..it takes some serious inspirational motivation.  Plus at 149 dollars a pop for my KB.. it could easily become an economic incentive.   Smiley Blink  Mm? So your collection of "used" KB's just needed a good cleaning or did they start to "fail" at some point?  Just curious...

I totally agree with you on the "animal" hair collection..when I had my Kitty..I didn't use a air dusting can..but vacuumed and needed to clean the unit more often.  Funny how Cats will parade across your KB and lounge on the monitor..just to get your attention directed toward them..  Well, if you've had a Cat for a Pet..you know exactly what I mean.   Laughing

When I thoroughly clean my keyboard, I use special cleaning solution I sort of concocted that has a "drying" agent, plus it is a good plastic cleaner..and disinfectant..if you can still consider alcohol in that vane in today's world.   Sticking Tongue Out

Some of my tools are "soft" toothbrush, tech Q'tips , and a sewing awl for line crevasses.  Making sure nothing is distorted or misplaced is the big item..and knowing where every item belongs is vital.. The first time is the challenge..it gets more routine each time..but being careful is always the required element so nothing goes wrong.

Now that there's no more Pets roaming about..the cleaning chore is not too bad..though I do miss my lil critters sometimes.   They were worth the extra effort..on keyboard, and whereever else...never doubt that..  Smiley Blink

Just examined my KB..after you started this thread...I'm good..for now  Big Smiley Grin Laughing

No they fail before I get rid of them.  Usually it starts with a sticky spacebar, then it moves into all keys just arn't as responsive as they once were.  They still all work but you can feel the difference when you press them, the no longer feel comfortable to press and you find yourself pressing each key much harder then you ever had to.

Electronically I've not had a keyboard fail, whatever electronical components in my keyboards have always seemed to function, it's usually the mechanical parts that just wear out.

When I find them, I buy my keyboards on ebay (the MS ergonomic keyboards) for about $15.00/each.  However I've been trying to get used to this other MS ergo keyboard that I paid like $59.00 for, so chances are I'll end up cleaning it to make it last a bit longer then the other keyboards.

Sammy is allergic to cats thankfully cause Im really just not a cat lover.

Smiley Blink  Yep.. the mechanical portion does take a beating sometimes..and with that many moving parts..  it's a real gamble which one will be the first to deteriorate and halt functionality.  Nothing is more frustrating than having a single key.. intermittently work..ArrgggHH!  Good thing KB's are simple fix..if they do need replacing.

Ah..Allergies to Cats.. half my family is.  My first pet "love" was my Boxer.. I inherited a cat(which is now gone).. from one of my daughters..who has Kitty allergy..but tried it for one of her children..and it didn't work out.

Strange that the way we use keyboards has not changed
much. The principle is still the same as very old type writers  Questioning

I seem to remember hearing that the typerwiter (and now keyboards) key layout was done in this way so as to limit the amount of speed one could type, is there any truth to this, or just myth?
