THere's been a little jibberish about movies in various threads recently, so I thought I'd start a thread where we can talk about our faves, and which ones have impressed us most. What's your faves? What's in your library? What movies have made an impact in yhour life? What kind of movies do you like? What kind do you hate?

I only have one movie that I've bought, and I bought it today. I bought Hidalgo. That movie is the best adventure film I know of.

Movies that have impressed me:

To Kill a Mockingbird.  This one really was a mind blower. Is a great story, with not such a surprise ending now that I'm older, but when I saw it at about 12 years old, it really shook me.

Lawrence of Arabia was fascinating, perplexing, and thought provoking. I still don't undertand the dichotomy of his world entirely, but it seems that he couldn't betray either the two sides that he allied with.

Spartacus teaches courage against insurmountable odds. THere's plenty other movies about courage too.

Bout honor, nothing is more impressive than The Big Country, starring Gregory Peck. Now, that's a man's man! Master and commander is about honor and duty too, and it's a darn good movie.

I think I'm inclined to adventure moves most. Period pieces with cotuming and grreat production design always get me. I guess I'm just a romantic. Most of these are older stories too, like Last of the Mohicans, Moby Dick, Kidnapped, and various westerns, etc.  I also like musicals (don't you dare call me gay!). My Far Lady, Oklahoma, West Side Story, and others are great entertainment.

YOU? What has rocked your world? What kind of movies do you go for?

.. what constitutes gibberish Lengo?  I think every comment I've made about movies I've watched is my personal opinion.. hopefully it has been taken as such.

Over the years at their release I saw Spartacus.. Ben Hur.. probably every Epic film that arrived on the scene...since the 60's  Some I liked better than others..  I thought the Ten Commandments was way ahead of it's time with special effects.. I hated early Science Fiction movies.. but knew they would get better..and WOW..did they ever!!   Smiley Blink

I like a good tearjerker occasionally.  "Somewhere in Time"..is a good example.  One of my personal favorites Immortal Beloved I liked for whatever reason.. maybe it's the music, more than the story??   Smiley Blink

To Kill a Mockingbird, Lawrence of Arabia, The Big Country with Gregory Peck..all great flicks..and the others too.  I can say my entertainment through the years has been of Classic quality.. Smiley Blink

Yeah----How d'ya mean 'gibberish' are you referring to my inane babbling Laughing
My favourite musical is "Calamity Jane" I love it, I watch it all the way through with a smile on my face Agreed Happy "Showboat"  "Kiss Me Kate" (both with another fav Howard Keel) "Seven Brides For Seven Brothers" (another H/Keel film)
"Ben-Hur" another great film, with the added benefit of my absolute fav movie star Charlton Heston, I very much like 'Biblical' films, and have seen most of them,
The "Indiana Jones" trilogy, I could watch those over and over,( and frequently do),
Westerns are another genre I like a lot, "The Big Country", "Once upon a Time In The West" (I have that soundtrack) "How The West Was Won"
The "Jurassic Park" trilogy, "King Kong" "Godzilla" (the last one) and all those 'monster movies'
Disaster films---"The Day after Tomorrow" "Independence Day"  "The Towering Inferno" "Earthquake" and many more that names escape me at the moment,
One of the best films I've ever seen is "The Shawshank Redemption" and another good film is "Road To Perdition" I can't even begin to list all the films I like,
I hate ---- Gory movies,(Chainsaw Massacree) and the like
CHARLIE CHAPLIN grrrrr
Silent Movies Laughing

I like most of the epics, well done science fiction, Clint Eastwood, and my fav is the Wind and the Lion with Sean Connery, which is roughly based on fact cept they changed the abductee from a man to a woman with 2 children.

Like Sandra, hate bloodly stuff.

Jibberish = words. No ill connotation implied.

What!! You didn't like the teenagers vs the aliens from outter space, where Frankie and Annette had to warn the town, but nobody would listen! THEM'S CLASSICS! (Now those were comedy, fer sure!)

Yeah.. once in a while it's good to go awwwwwwwww...  I certainly liked Fried Green Tomatoes.   Chick flicks are good, as long as they're not TOO soapy! Big Smiley Grin Laughing

OH YEAH! That one is hoot! Why I almost forgot about that one. Musicals are super! Did you ever see Disney's "Newsies". It was a real sleeper, but I really liked it. Musical just have a bad rap. People would rather see graphic violence these days. What a shame!

Oooh! That's a collector's item! Yeah, that one's pretty rockin'! I'll put that one on my list to buy.

Re: Ben Hur.  I like it but it's soooo freakin' long! I like short epics  Big Smiley Grin Laughing (is there such a thing?)

And I'm sorry, but Charlton Heston was too over the top in just about all his movies. Still, the best of his is The Big Top, and his performance in The Big Country. Those are palatable.

But nobody has mentioned John Wayne. I love the man! I have a wall calender with numerous portraits of him.  Who can't love a man with a hangover who says this? --

And what's yer take on Zorba the Greek (Anthony Quinn)?  I saw that about 1 year ago (again). I'm still undecided about that one. It's disturbing, but there's many lessons to be learned. Still.. I just don't know. I guess I like it. It makes me think. The trouble is, I don't know what I'm thinking.

Are you guys subcribers at IMDB (internet movie database)? There's a lot of good info there. Check it out if you've never been there.

IMDB is not a place you buy DVDs. It's a review site and a database. It's a place you can find movies starring any particular actor, or movies by a director. It's cross referenced very well. Plus, there's countless synopsis and user reviews. Its a good place to find artists' works, find reminders for movies you've forgotten, and to look up who is in a movie or whatever. They do have links to place you can purchase movies, but that's not what the site is about. It's about getting the lowdown on movies before you buy them, or finding all the movies that any actor or director has done. Check it out. I think you'll like it.

Yeah, IMDB is great for getting info on movies. It's a super-database.

I don't quite recall what Wind and the Lion is about, but it's a suspenseful thriller/power struggle set in Northern Africa if I remember. I'll have to look it up. But I do remember that it's pretty darn good!

-----------
heh heh heh!  I watched some Laurel and Hardy last night. It was a riot! I love those guys! Check out "Way Out West" sometime. Tis truly hysterical in places!  Agreed Happy Lengo gives it THREE thumbs up (izzat possible?)!

Looking around cautiously  I guess having all the info and other peoples opinion about a movie can be important.  I just watch and decide for myself.. mostly because it is ME who wants to be entertained.

I have favorite actors.. sometime they do well.. sometimes they stink it up. I buy movies I know I'll watch more than once.  The same goes for movies I know the g'daughters will watch.

Some movies are better viewed on IMAX.. I've gone to Portland to see special showings of documentaries ..it's been awhile since that's happened.

No doubt Laurel and Hardy is great comedy.. I don't have a large collection of that period of comedy. As for the three thumbs..??  Does Gus have thumbs?..  That would make it work.. Laughing
