And just what's funny about those answers? They look correct to me!  Big Smiley Grin Laughing

I like the one about dew -- plants that perspire.  Laughing

I dunno about kids these days, but me'thinks the education system is lacking. It's just too boring. All those tiny little facts instead of the big picture. What difference does it make what year so and so happened? As long you get the decade right, your're on top of things. More impotantly are questions like "What was learned from WW1?" or "Name the four consequences of industiralization". Those little facts mean nothing. What's important is how things have affected us now, and how we can avoid the same mistakes.

I think rightfully, kids are bored because the material is boring. They teach facts, not moral lessons.

When it comes to math, it's not about crunching numbers! It should be about WHY you're crunching numbers in a particualr method. Like, whats an application for using calculus? Why is Algebra important? How do you find the center of rectangle using only straight lines? This kind of thing is being overlooked, and therefore the kids are learning stuff that they don't know how to apply! But if they can see a use for it, then they'll see the importance of it. That's what's lacking. That's why they're bored with it.

The answers show the kids' imagination and creativity. These are ingenious answers, even though they're ludicrous. Imaginatino and creativity will never go away. But the education system doesn't know how to tap into it for the most part. That's a shame.

Smiley Blink Mmm?  So when did growing up start requiring teachers and parents to make life interesting ..and not boring?  I agree crucial family structures have been assaulted along with  beleaguered cultures in this modern age..leaving very few avenues of constructive learning open so children can learn the about consequences of right and wrong.

All the factors have to be considered...expecting perfection for parenting or socialital intervention will never be a very precise way to measure the outcome of the offspring.  Everyone who has raised their children somewhere along the way has encountered this realization..your dealing with individuals...and a kaleidoscope of ways that particular personality will respond to praise vs criticism..laughter vs crying..or love vs hate..etc.  Smiley Blink

"A little imagination goes a long way..." My thoughts on imagination..this is something that is inherent within every individual..each one will drawn from it.  So long as the opportunity is presented allowing the creativity to blossom, then there's not much more to offer.  As for History..it is vital that we preserve the icons of our past who did great things.. it inspires the next generation to excel to ever higher achievements.  Along with history comes the Bad guys and their deeds too.. hopefully by knowing about them, will deter some individuals from choosing a similar dark and destructive path.

I agree not everyone has the desire or capacity to learn the higher Maths..and we can live with or without that ..as being a defining marker for either individual.  The personal gifts each of us possess has to be discovered and made use of in a way that it defines our individuality.  Living totally without any discipline will breed anarchy in those without self discipline, so some sort of consequences has to be present for those who need correction.  This keep those who don't need it reassured that there is a Right and Wrong.. and allows the cultivation of empathy so that the proper assistance will be given to those who require help.

As for a specific example..my oldest sister and I have almost identical transcripts from our schools...our classes, even our grades were close.  She has a profession that doesn't require what she learned in class....like higher math.  My work required it most everyday..and what was nice is that I could explain my work to her and I knew she recognized enough of my conversation so I could make a point.  Same with her..I attended enough of her pre Med classes to understand the natural of her conversations.  We use to tease each other, by saying "You should've been a Doctor..(to me)..and Engineer (me to her).. Now we're both retired and work related small talk isn't relevant..we have the grandchildren make our days challenging.  Smiley Blink

Good post there, Max. You make a lot of good and valid points.

I guess I failed to point out that it's the teacher's duty to channel the kids' imaginations. If they're bored, the imagination strays. And it's not the teachers' fault. It's the system's. The new school of thought equals the old school of thought -- what the ABC's are, not how to apply them. And once again, it's not the details that matter. It's the lesson of the big picture. The system doesn't accommodate for that. It's too busy teaching rote. No Child Left Behind = Every Child Left Behind.

So, how did you spend Cinco de Mayo? I had some GREAT TACOS at Sophia's in Springfield. They were yummy! Hope yours was as good as mine!

Well..IMO the education of our children should not hinge on the any political ideology.  Governments in any fashion should provide school facilities for a place to educated the populous.  Teacher should teach..and as you say cultivate, encourage those imaginations. There should be no finger pointing either way..as that only serves as an excuse for everyone.  Laughing

Teacher's should be paid well as they are responsible for the literacy of the next generation. Those who will shoulder the weight of continuing our existence.  Funding is a political "scoring votes" device...it only promotes dissatisfaction for each side of the issue.  Refuse to allow the educational system to be ALWAYS broken.  Make it a National priority.. and totally out of the Political arena .. sure would make my sister happy  Big Smiley Grin Laughing

I agree. We want good students, but don't pay to attract great teachers. We expect teachers to be dedicated.  But we pay great salaries to doctors. Are they dedicated? I think not. They are dedicated to getting the most from their time ($$$).

But oh well. There's not much I can do. However, I try to teach whenever I can.

Laughing I hoped that you would read Sandra's post pat!!  hehe. Some really great responses there.

@Lengo.. Doctors are forced to work their profession as a Business..for a number of valid reasons.  Teachers are "hired" to accomplish a specific duty.. Teach our children using their own acquired Education by performing that specific task.  If they were relieved of the distraction..worrying about funding..then they could relax and do the job they were hired to do..  Smiley Blink

Sadly we've managed to make our education system so complex and complicated from either side of political isles..that nothing seems to ever satisfy the problems.

"...no child left behind" is a political slogan... A Superintent's signature on every student's Diploma will make slogans like this a moot point.   Sticking Tongue Out

Can I quote you on that?  I'll make that into a paper mache plaque for sale for teachers to hang on their wall!

That's genius!  Thumbs Up

Smiley Blink Quoting the obvious..yet subtle statements using Common Sense logic is always permissible

...and modestly speaking doesn't necessarily have to rank in the realm of genius.   Wink

Genius will apply when someone figures out how to implement a permanent fix to all these educational problems.   Sticking Tongue Out
