OMG!!!!!  I absolutely hate carpeting in a home.  For 3 years I've been using a "Bissell" proheat steam cleaner to keep the carpets *clean* only to do it again this morning...

I started to clean with the Bissell and noticed that it really wasn't cleaning at all but more just making all of the carpets look muddy looking.

I finally gave up and after seeing a Rug Doctor informercial at 3AM (couldnt sleep) this morning I decided to go to the Albertsons grocery store and rent one.  OMG!!!  I can't believe the difference between how each machine works.

The first 2 swipes across the living room floor showed a new carpet underneath the old one.  I mean it was bright and it was lusterous and it looked great.  And this was after using the Bissell cleaner multiple times across the living room.  Granted there are some "high traffic" areas that will never look *new* again due to matting but...

Im taking a break for 30 minutes now since Im about exhausted from just moving furniture and cleaning the carpet with the Rug Doctor but I'll continue and get at least the living room done today.  I've got the machine till tommorrow at 12 noon, but the home/office will have to wait till she gets home to decide where she wants her "stuff" as it's all over the office, whereas my "stuff" is pretty much limited to my desk and a small corner of the room.

I swear to "you know who", that if I ever own another home it will NEVER have carpeting in it.  I'll stick the cheapest lineolum flooring in it before I put carpeting in it.

I've made like 5 or 25 swipes across the same areas and the water still comes out dirty...  YUCK!

I guess thats what happens when we have 3 dogs that like to lay in the dirt outside instead of laying on the grass.  You really don't realize just how YUCKY (Dirty) a carpet is until it's properly cleaned.  I mean it hasn't looked *great* since about a year after we moved in, but...  You just don't notice how dirty looking it becomes unless you move some big furniture or do a real cleaning of the capets.

YUCK FRIGITY YUCK!  I've now learned just how disgusting carpeting is, why in the world anyone would want it is beyond me.

My mother told me about a year ago that she will never put in carpeting again, and now I understand why!

Well.... Back to cleaning the carpets *sigh*, again!  A little *liquid energy* (jack and diet coke) and I'll be good to go for another 2 hours.

Crying  OH boy CB... one of my most dreaded chores.

Back in the late 70's I invested in several Rug Doc franchises..just because the system performed and seemed well engineered.. the company grew and other lucrative opportunities arose.. I managed to move on to other things..sometimes wish I'd kept those investments.  Well people will always have carpets that need a good cleaning system..  on the otherhand..

I removed most of my carpets, and went with hardwood floors..and some area type rugs though not until after I no longer had a dog.  I remember the trouble with slippery floors my doggie daughter had (plus doggie toenails are treacherous on wood floors)..so the carpets made it easier..just the endless cleaning... arrggh!!  what a paradox.. Crying

Heh?... now don't tempt me by alluding to Jack.. Looking around cautiously  I managed to plant some flowers today, and my back is sore.  I know a splash of Jack n Coke would cure it.. if I let it. hehe  Sticking Tongue Out

Thought I'd post 2 before and after pics...

Our Home/Office is going to look so nice again once Im done with the carpets.  It's more of a difference in the home/office then it is in the living room because the living room gets hoovered everyday (by me), and the office here gets hoovered only about once per week (so the office rugs are much dirtier looking then the living room normally is) since *normally* we keep the dogs out of the office *at least when wer're not at home anyway*.

Sadly the Rug Dr couldnt really take care of the carpets in the home office.  They are noticibly better though far from looking like our Living room rugs, I guess I'll have to pop to pay someone to come in with a truck mount cleaner to give the office a good cleaning and see how they fair with it.

The biggest downfall of the rug doctor machines is that they only hold 2 gallons of clean water and in the case of really dirty rugs, that 2 gallons lasts for an area about 3' x 5' and then it's time to fill it up again.  What they really need is an optional attachment that would let a person hook it up to the kitchen sink (or in our case the hotwater bib on the outside of our house) and then have another hose that exhausts the dirty water either outside or into the tub or toilet or something like that.  That would make cleaning up with a rug doctor much more efficient and pleasant.

My throat is killing me today, Im guessing I've probably ingested too much YUCK and it's bothering my throat.

I agree CB, the volume is small...and limited in what it can do for some circumstances.  There's "tricks" so give better results (less water hauling)..like on heavily soiled materials..to pretreat..or to pre-saturate with a breakdown cleaner first.  I always tried not to "soak" my carpets..but that is hard to avoid if the appearance of cleaning isn't produced.  One trick I used was to clean the carpet with the detergent agents.. and then go over the whole thing with an Oxyclean rinser type application.  Saves..going over one spot over n over..changing water every few feet.  As I recall one 2 gal setup should cover and 8' x 8' floor area of normal cleaning.  Smiley Blink

The business model for the home use is designed to be for do it youselfer's.. any expansion on the design would complicate it for ease of use..plus would take the market away from the Vanmounted contractors.  Been that way from the beginning.. Wink ..frequency of changing the water would vary from rental to rental anyway.

I can understand that...  I think in our case the carpets were so bad that it really would have cost a small fortune in pre-treatment solution since it would have had to been applied to almost the entire carpets.

Our living room is only about 15 x12 or so (really small), and I think I filled up the machine about 10 to 12 times.  Each time the water came out dirty when I emptied the container until near the end when it just started coming back a very light translucent tan color which I felt was probably enough for one day in that room.  Even though I went over the entire carpets at the end without adding any more water just to make sure I'd sucked up as much moisture as I could, it's still drying, it's just about dry now but it's taken like 15 hours with a fan blowing over the floor in the living room.

I have to wonder if it would have been bewtter to go over the entire floor at a normal pace and doing it multiple times instead of going as slow as I went to try to get the color back to the tan color of the carpet by moving really really slow.

I'll be calling around to some van cleaners soon, though I think the way that they work is that they request that the customer removes as much from the floor as possible, i.e. chairs, sofas, tables, desks etc.  Which would be a real chore for us at this point with my wrists being so bad off.

Oh well... I'll have to check into it anyway.

Thanks for the information.

I don't mind shampooing carpets. You do this not very often. I enjoy having the extra padding and insulation, so cleaning the carpets doesn't really bother me. But yes, it's a strenuous task! It's more phjysical than any other job around the house.

I gotta wonder though. If they invented self-cleaning ovens, why can't they invent self-cleaning carpets?

They can..but Fear of getting to know every Lawyer listed in the Phone directory could be a lkely deterrent.

since it..might keep the Fire Department too busy.   Laughing
