Art
« on: March 20, 2007, 09:56:28 PM »

I recently got interested in many arts. One is photography -- other people's and my own - thus my website (on hold temporarily). Even more recently, a renewed interest in papier mache. This is quite cool. There is some really fine stuff out there!

Here's some great galleries (and some how-to's too):

http://www.papiermache.co.uk/exec/cms-gallery/

I'm getting started. I've got pulp "brewing", and all the materials for basic stuff. Tomorrow, I'm gonna make a penguin!  Agreed Happy

You might meet me at the Saturday Market, Max! This might turn out to be a LOT of fun! Big Smiley Grin Laughing

Does anyone else have art interests? I'm sure you do! Erm... pretty sure. What's yours?

Papier mache was fun.  I did one in high school for an Art class.

Unfortunately I don't have any photographs of it anymore, but it was a 4 foot high pink flamingo with it's wings outstretched.  It ended up being displayed in the Art viewing case in the main enterance of the school from about 1982 till about 2003 (last time I went for a visit).

It was really quite a hoot to make.  I really challenged myself on that project.  I don't recall what everybody else made but there were a couple other kids that made some busts of people, but most of the other students made something that was far from challenging, well.... Might have been challenging if they were made by monkeys but not by people.

But most of the students in class took art for an easy class.  Though there were a few of us that really liked taking Art.

Smiley Blink  Well Lengo,  I'm amazed at your energy to dive into new projects.  I think the last I had any contact with this art was in high school.  The kids might've, but I don't recall anything.

I haven't been to Sat Market for a couple of years.. I heard a conversation that mentioned that they were using the Fairgrounds..is that right?  I dread the downtown area..only go when I have a Doc appointment.

Have fun with your penquin!!  Wink

Some people just don't get it, do they? They're looking for a way out instead of a way in.
They miss the joy of life -- seeing, doing, and learning all you can. That's just too bad. They don't understand what the joy of life is!

To me, wisdom comes from experience. The more you experience, the wiser you will become.

I'm trying to make up for lost time I think. And the way my neck hurts, I gotta get a lot done while I can. Simply put, "I'm not done yet!"

WHAT! The Saturday Market is the place to be! It's colorful. There's nice people. There's free entertainment. And there's FOOD! It's a great low-cost place to hang out, in the sun and the breeze! And in August, there's fresh peaches! Ooooooh!

Have fun with your penquin!!

I've changed that. I'm working on beer-bellied muscle man. He's gonna be so cool!  Agreed Happy I'd attach a picture, but I'm too lazy to shoot one. I'll shoot one first thing in the morning so you can see how he's shaping up.

I'm not sure that I'm having fun. Having gooey fingers stresses me out! Everything you touch sticks to you! Then the house is a mess (I'm sorta a clean freak). I guess I'll get used to it all, but at the outset, it is NOT relaxing. I keep fearing that I"m screwing up! I already have, but tough! This guy's gonna get finished, even though I gotta do it the hard way (I put his legs on before I strengthened his butt).

----
Now come on! What kinds of arts fascinate you? I like just about everything -- paintings, sculpture, jewelry, photography, music, movies..... erm... just about everything, even poetry! What floats yer boat? There's GOTTA be something (and don't you dare say TV).  Big Smiley Grin Laughing

Jewelry, I've been dying to tumble some rocks and make some pendants and or rings out of them.

We have a vast mountain of beautiful rocks that could be tumbled into some jewelry, and I was hesitant since I didn't know what kind of tumbler to get but I seem to remember MHBrands saying to get a kids toy tumbler from someplace like toys r us and that it would work fine.

I've just never found the time to go and see if the local toys r us has one in stock.  Yet I've got tons of cool looking rocks sitting in a box in the garage that I keep picking up more and more of when we're out walking the kids... Um... I mean dogs.

Thumbs Up  CB, I've seen some really neat rock collections where the hobbyist person has displayed at fairs etc.  It's amazing how much beauty can be refined from unsuspecting rocks.  Now the jewelry part..that would be just another level of presentation.. sounds like it would be rewarding and fun. Smiley Blink

Lengo..as it gets warmer, I'll give the Sat Market a looksee.. as I asked before, is it downtown, or at the fairgrounds nowadays.. I haven't taken the time these past few years to frequent those venues.  As for hobbies..( I don't watch much TV, maybe an hour a day max), I read quite a-bit..time wise.  On the PC off and on, everyday, though I'm cautious with my eyes as I have a degenerating condition.  I relax with the piano, or keyboard, depending on if I'm here in Eugene or down in Roseburg.  So I have plenty of diversion on a daily basis.  I really don't have a bonafide "art" repertoire to place in motion.. <shrug>

I should add that I tinker with electronics when the mood or a project is in the works..as I am presently.  I never get in a hurry for anything..spent too many years pushing production schedules to the limit..so that was the first thing I got away from as a retiree.   Laughing

*edit* I do enjoy seeing and hearing about what others are doing..I'm genuinely inspired by creative minds and the art that is manifested from each individuals efforts.  My mother paints and is fairly accomplished, she has been commissioned numerous times to paint family group portraits. One she did was of a well known local political figure..it made it to the State capital for display..and now resides in the Family homestead in Bend.  Now me paint?.. I painted the house a couple of times...hehe  Wink

Jewelry is cool. I made some last year. Is very addicting with all the stones and beads you can buy.

More on rocks: See this! http://www.pbase.com/lengo_patapata/my_rocks_and_minerals&page=1
This combines two hobbies -- mineral collectiing and photography.

The Saturday Market is downtown at 8th and Oak. Parking is not a problem -- is free on Saturdays at any of the nearby garages. Full City Coffee is down there too. So is the Pita Pocket (great pita sandwiches). The "booth food" is always wholesome. They aren't even allowed to sell soft drinks. Try the Oregon Berry Juice stand! Is reaallllly good!

Here's some pictures of Mr Beerbelly in progress.  One shows a mold being fromed from a dolls face. This creates a negative mold. You then apply papier mache inside to get a positive. Then you tape it to the head on Mr Beerbelly.

The second photo shows how tall he is. Only one layer is applied so far. It will need six layers.

This guy is REALLY stupid. He has no brains! He don't even have a head! Then he wears newspaper. How can he read it if he don't have a head?  Big Smiley Grin Laughing

Thumbs Up Looking good Lengo.. I'm no expert, but I can tell you will do good work.

No reading..?? well try the comic pages..don't need much of a head to enjoy those pages.  I see your photography is very good..lighting is correct, good angular focal point for depth distinction.  All around nice presentation..btw thanks for the Link..I roamed around looking at so many that i couldn't tell if I was repeating my observations.. Big Smiley Grin Laughing

Also thanks for the info on the Sat Market, I give it a go sometime this season.  Smiley Blink

heh heh heh. Believe ti or don't, one fill light is used in a ltight tent. The main spot light is a flashlight!  If you wanna know how to make the light tent (very cheap and a fun project), let me know and I'll point you to instructions.

Wink  Thanks for the light tent offer.  I'm not a great photographer..I have siblings who are, so have weathered their growing pains in the hobby.

I'll see if that berry juice offer is still good around the 4th of July..I get out more during that month than any other month locally.  Plus see if Nokie and Judy are interested in having a little concert at Richardson Park this summer.  Always a great time around the country fair time.   Smiley Blink
Great music and old cars...a mass of people in flipflops..add kids and cotton candy, and its just one big ol merry time. Big Smiley Grin Laughing
