Im really rather pleased.  Since working on my mothers website and finding out that she can only view things at 1024x768 resolution I had to rebuild her site to accomodate it, but this was a pain because I run at 1280x1024 res, and switching back and forth was a real bother.

Plus she had me constantly re-arranging in what order the photos were going to be, but I couldnt just drag and drop from one page to another because my montior wasn't big enough to see both pages on the screen at the same time so it was quite time consuming so I did what I do best... Spend more money!  Laughing

I found a deal on a new ViewSonic 22" widescreen monitor at Circuit City (Circuit Silly).  Normally priced at $399.00, they had it listed at $50.00 off with another $30.00 mail in rebate.

So now I've got 2 monitors hooked up (thankfully my graphics card supports two monitors), so my main is the 22" set to 1680x1050 (which makes playing games like World of Warcraft absolutely stunning) and my secondary monitor setup at 1280x1024, but reduced down to 1024x768 when Im working on my moms site to make sure it all fits.

Although it does take up a lot of desk space now.

And I'm still on a CRT  Laughing

It's a NEC with "SuperBright Diamondtron" picture-tube

The reason I'm still using it is the Color Saturation is absolutely outstanding.

And that together with high contrast without "milking" any color or the black
makes me want to keep using it!!

Think I have to pay alot to get the same Color-pressure from an LCD......

I know what you mean, I had a crt monitor (still do but it's in the closet in the garage) that was outstanding.  A huge 19" display that would take up the full depth of my desk when I switched to a smaller desk to accomodate more desks in the home/office.

It was always great unless I put something like the speakers next to it, in which case it would flutter.

Im constantly suprised by the color differences in different monitors.

The new viewsonic is very very good, but gray comes out more goldish, and on the AOpen 19" flat panel, the greys are more silver.  Now on the Xerox flat panel (thats hooked up to our servers) everything is very yellowish tinted.  Yet when I got the Xerox a couple years ago I never noticed it.

But this viewsonic is the first flat panel that came to me without any dead pixels, both the xerox and AOpen had at least a couple dead pixels on them.

For the price of this new monitor you can bet I would have returned it if it had even one pixel that was dead.

Having two monitors really is quite usefull at times.  My wife often wonders how I get anything done since I usually have so many windows open and jump back and forth, now having two monitors it's easier to jump back and forth, or to keep my email program open on one while I play a game on the other incase somethign important comes through.

Now if I could just hook up 3 monitors I'd be all set.

Thumbs Up  hehe.. If I could find a larger Desk.. I wouldn't mind THREE monitors.. Wink

I got all jazzed when Win98SE was hawking "9" monitors support.. never tried it..personally.

But Two is a no brainer.. it does depend on what you actually want to do with the Extra Screens..

Here's some things I've investigated.

Matrox Triplehead2Go is an interesting monster screen device.  also I've used this..check it out.

I'm trying this little guy presently...

http://www.realtimesoft.com/ultramon/overview/

Just a FYI for those who are interested

Below is a listing of operating systems and the number of screens supported.

Vista Link
http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/device/display/multimonVista.mspx

Microsoft Windows XP Up to 10 screens

Microsoft Windows 98 Up to 8 screens

Microsoft Windows Second Edition Up to 8 screens

Microsoft ME Up to 8 screens

Microsoft Windows XT (New) Up to 9 screens

Microsoft Windows 2000 Up to 8 screens

Microsoft windows NT Up to 8 screens

Apple - All G4 systems

HP - UX Yes

SGI - IRIX up to 6 screens

SUN - All products Up to 8 screens

Linux - Varies

If you are good at hacking n flashing BIOS.. some alternative situations open up.. but I wouldn't recommend it to the casual user.

I'm a little confused. How do you run 2 monitors at two different resolutions? Doesn't the graphics card set the resolution?

I'm still using CRT.  I find it comfortable to use and colors look nice. Mine is a 17" and I run at 1024 x 768 which is very adequate. It's a flat faced CRT. I would NOT use a curved face CRT, but flat faced CRT works pretty good.

So, how do you do this? I mean, run two monitors at once? And can you display two different things on each monitor, or do both display the same thing, only at different resolutions?

I run an ATi X1900GT graphics card and it has two outputs.  As for what I understand of it, the graphics driver is the one that will control what is on each screen sorta...

Yes, you can display different things on each monitor or choose to have the monitors mimick each other and display the same thing on both (kind of useless in my opinion), so on mine I might have my honda store information on my main screen and on the side screen I may be running windows mail or visa versa.  Also very usefull for me when I do my Honda work I usually insert a movie into the dvd drive and I have it display on the side monitor so that way I can do my work and watch a movie at the same time.  Keep in mind that the movies I watch while working don't really need to be watched persay, since they are usually musicals or rock operas etc so it's more of a listen to my movies but still able to look over at it while Im waiting on the Honda servers to accept the data and spit out the response.

The resolution is set in the normal way that you set the resolution, right click desktop, choose properties then the settings (??) tab then set the resolution of the screen.  My new monitor can accept up to 1680x1024 and really can't be run any lower because then things get stretched out of shape, and the secondary monitor runs normally at 1280x1024 and can't be run any higher.  In the display panel when two monitors are hooked up, you would see two representations of monitors in the display panel instead of one, and you can set each resolution of each monitor seperately.

Hope that explains it a bit.

Erm... I think I see. You gotta have a graphics card that has two outputs, right?

I remember the old DOS days. I sure coulda used a dual monitor set up -- one to view the code and another to view the output. That would have been a lot easier to work with. I have no need for dual monitors now.

The only hardware I could use at this time is a better sound card. My mainboard is nForce driven, and crosstalk causes increased noise. I am unsure of what to do about it. I've read other people's complaints about the same problem, so buying a new sound card probably wouldn't solve it anyway. Still, I'd likie a better card than what I'm running now. I have a Soundblaster 24 bit. Have considered an Audigy, but they're pricey, and this is the card that people are complaining about. Ultimately, I'd like to have a card that has great midi voices too. Every now and then I get the urge to create some tunes, but I can't find one that is suitable for this kind of work that is under $400. Ouch! No can do!

Anyways... congrats on the new monitor. Anything that makes life easier is a blessing.

I see CB has answered this quite well.  These are just a couple of "help" sites might be of assistance if someone wants to give the dual monitors a spin..

How To:

http://www.pcworld.com/video/id,367-page,1-bid,4/video.html

Mine and CB's Graphics Card are pretty much the same... GT-XT are close enough.

http://peripherals.about.com/od/videographicscards/fr/atix1900xt

Info on this page this is lists the feature here..(in green)

Warranty Requirements
1 Year Limited
Display Support
Dual integrated dual-link DVI for high-resolution digital displays
DVI-I connectors for digital CRTs or flat panel displays
Xilleon™ TV encoder for high quality analog output
YPrPB component output for direct drive of HDTV displays
VGA mode support on all outputs
Drive two displays simultaneously with independent resolutions and refresh rates

I'd like to try a third monitor..in some situations.
*edit* Whoa...Lengo...didn't see you squeeze your post in...hope all this stuff gives you an idea..it's easy to do.   Smiley Blink
