I wanted to let everybody know (and I'll probably send out a mass mail to all users when a more definate date has been reached) that I will be moving this website to a webhosting companys servers.

The basics of it is....  My mother has decided to get her own domain and wants me to design a website for her, so we signed her up with a web host that gives more space and bandwidth then she will ever use, so we are going to utilize this space and bandwidth for both the civcityforums.com and citybuildergames.com and move the sites over there.

This will allow me to reduce my monthly costs associated with paying the provider of our internet by half and should make the sites more dependable and easier to reach for everybody.

So sometime in the next 2 weeks I am going to be moving the sites over to their servers which will mean that the sites may be unreachable for a short while, during the period of transition.  We may lose a couple posts that happen between when the site is setup on the new servers and what is posted on the old server, theres really no way around that except to turn off posting abilities here until the domain resolves to the new host.

Anyway, her hosting account is good for 1 year (pre paid) so that will at least mean that these two sites will remain on the internet for at least the next 1 year and then we can figure out what to do with them after that.  Im pretty sure that she will keep paying for the hosting each year so Im not too concerned at this point that the sites will be available for quite a few years to come.

I'll keep you all updated.

That's great CB !!

It's very easy to take a site like this one for granted....

If you can lower the cost it makes me feel better!

All because of the "natural" style this forum has got....

I haven't seen anything like it!

Other forums that has got an open-natural style things
get overdone and people crosses too many lines....

hahahahaha, of course I am  Looking around cautiously  Wink

Actually, I hate doing a website for family members because even though they couldnt tell the difference between a pretty and usefull website and one that isn't, I always feel the need to make it the best it can be and this annoys me to no extent because no website will ever be good enough for family members.

But Im trying to relax on this one and Im copping out and using a window from Windows Vista for the shell of the website and inserting her content inside of it so that it looks like a windows vista window in the browser window.

The other hardest thing is making people that have absolutely no experience in web design to understand that it's not a 2 hour process to design a website.  For some reason my mother was under the impression that a website could be setup in a matter of 30 minutes or so.  Really quite annoying when I visted her on sunday and her secretary calls me on monday morning to find out if Im done with the website yet.  Arrgghhhhhh.

Heck, I've got to pay for the new printer that I had to buy so that it would be compatible with Vista somehow.  Laughing

Big Smiley Grin Laughing Big Smiley Grin Laughing  You guys are killing me...hehe Yeah..pat.I've thought the same thing..

My folks once had WebTV..way back..and what a nightmare(they only used it for email). ..maybe.  Once I convinced them to let a PC in the house, and I secretly stashed their ten foot poles away.. well..it's sort of a no-win situation.. they are in the 80's and do not have high tech standards engrained into their persona.  Both retired before the PC age hit every household...so for them the desire or usefullness just is difficult to perceive.

That's OK the rest of the family takes up the slack...I think that speaks for itself. Looking around cautiously

Funny thing though  CB might relate.. My Mom always asks me questions about things she knows I will have to go online to find out...pretty subtle way if you ask me. Laughing

I know that problem with my mother...

She is asking me why I have a computer  Laughing

How do you answer a question like that...

I'm usually compare it with a car, because
we are soon there when a computer is as
important or in some cases more important
then a car  Smiley Blink

But she does not understand  Looking around cautiously

When my mother first discovered email, she used to email me with web links asking me to investigate further.  What I often found is that the link that she emailed me was from a message forum back in 1994 or so and was long gone.

I use to scream up and down in the house about it because I was frustrated but my wife took up the slack and emailed my mum back and told her that the information she seeks no longer exists and it would drop right there.

I keep waiting for the message to appear on my screen telling me "You have seen it all, there is nothing left to see on the internet, please go elsewhere, you have seen IT ALL!"

Smiley Blink Good answer UC... I use the medical assistance angle.  I showed my Mother how to search WebMD and she was sooo amazed, like a little kid who had ice cream for a treat.

Now it's a routine for me to set her up on that site and let her roam through all the Medical info pages.  Then she wants to play Mahjong to relax... Smiley Blink  Sounds normal to me..
