I ended up buying a new microwave about 5 months or so ago because the last one just up and quit.  We don't know what happened to it, just one day i went to use it and noticed that the clock was no longer on, so I made sure it was plugged in and all and it was but the clock didn't display.  I put something in it to reheat it and it just sat there dead.  So I ended up buying one of these dual microwaves from a Target store for really cheap (compared to what I payed for the last one years and years ago) that does both microwaving as well as broiling or browning.

But while I was uncluttering the kitchen today, I am thinking about re-arranging the appliances on the counters to try to neaten it up a bit.

When we bought the new Micro I setup it up in a new position in the small kitchen, figuring that if it was easier to get to, then we would more than likely actually use it and thus use up dinner leftovers for lunch the next day or so.  But what Im finding is that we hardly ever use the microwave.  Sure it's handy to warm up some milk or to boil up some water in a reasonable amount of time, and occasionally we might nuke some kind of food in it, but in general it's probably the least used appliance in my kitchen second to the blender.

So Im toying with putting it back in it's original position in the kitchen which  will tuck it into a corner which isn't convienient because we really just don't find many uses for it.

So how often do you use your microwave if you have one? And do you do create any dishes that are really spectacular by using the microwave?

a microwave is great for steaming frozen of fresh veggies for a snack! I also use it to make quick baked potatoes with bacon, cheddar and broccoli!

Other than that, popcorn is about my limit

Hmmm, yeah I forgot about the vegetables.  I buy the birdseye frozen microwave in the bag vegetables and we use the micro for that on a more regular basis.

But only some of their product of nuke in the bag veggies are worthwhile, some of them like the brocolli just gets soggy, but the cut and mixed veggies does quite well as do the peas.

put the broccoli on your microwave bacon cooker after you get those little grooves wet, and set the timer for about 3 minutes. It will still be semi-crisp

 Thumbs Up

  • Defrosting
  • Popcorn
  • Quick Bake Items
  • Leftovers
  • Water for Tea
  • Therapy Bead Bag
  • G'kids snacks

If I had a MW closer to my desk..I suppose I would use it to reheat my coffee.  But I do need to get up and move around more often...so a trip to the kitchen is necessary...and probably keeps me in better health. Smiley Blink

Some food items work really well prepared using the MW...I prefer a oven baked potato..but the MW just cuts the time down so much that I've become spoiled in this instance. Wink

......, just one day i went to use it and noticed that the clock was no longer on, so I made sure it was plugged in and all and it was but the clock didn't display.  I put something in it to reheat it and it just sat there dead.  .....

Hey! Mine is just llike yours, 'cept it works though there is no display. It's been like this for months!

I use mine daily. I heat coffee, "bake" potatoes, and all kinds of stuff! I even use it to dry my hair after a shower.   Agreed Happy

One thing that I actually cook with mine is enchiladas. Its so easy! Fisrt cook yer meat (erm.. not your meat... I mean chicken or whatever), then when its ready, put cheese on your tortilla, some meat, and enchilada sause, then zap 'em for about 30 seconds. The chesee melts, the tortilla softens, and you're ready to roll 'em up on the plate that you zapped 'em on. Add your rice and beans and a little salad with sour cream, and Bingo (thats Spanish for voila').... tu tienes una comida de enchiladas muy sabroso!

But yeah, daily. I use it for all things, and you should see my latest hair do!  Big Smiley Grin Laughing

I love brocoli myself but theres someone in this house who will go unmentioned that doesnt digest brocoli all that well and .......

Anyway, Im going to have to try the enchiladas one of these days to see how that turns out.

The mistake I made in buying this micro was that I opted to get the stainless steel model instead of the white or black ones that they had at the time, thinking that stainless would look so nice, and it really does after I polish away all the fingerprints every time that someone does actually use it.  At least I've learned on a smaller purchase that I really don't want stainless steel appliances for the whole kitchen, the cleaning of fingerprints and what not would drive me pretty batty.

I used it this morning to make my cheesy bacon slop that I love and my partner hates, but being that she didn't come home last night I figured I'd make it while I still could.

It's basically cheese soup, with sourcream, worsteshire sauce and some milk.  This get microwaved.

Then I cooked up the bacon (in the pan because I don't have a microwave bacon cooking rack)

Then toast up some english muffins.

Put a couple slices of bacon on top of the english muffins, then cover in the cheesy slop and your done.

Mmmm Mmmmm good stuff for the rare few that actually like it.

I'll have to get some time to go to target and pick up a bacon rack and give that a try.  I used to use the precooked bacon that you just reheat in the microwave bag but it is never as good as stuff you cook up yourself and seems overly priced for what you actually get compared to uncooked bacon.

No you don't. Just get three paper towels. Put two underneat the bacon, and one over the top. All the grease goes into the towels, making an easy clean up.

p.s. I'll try that cheesy slop. Anything with a name like that has gotta be good!

Looking around cautiously Well, I just refrain from cooking anything in the MW that might make a mess..as I vividly recall when one of the kid placed an egg in it..just to see it blow up Laughing

Hey..I love Broc..and Cauliflower too.  Both are great with a cheesy topping too..and doesn't need a spanish label. But I does like a good enchillada..probably eat them once a week.   Wink

We go down on every other sunday morning to this small spanish restaurant in our neighborhood.  On sunday they have a buffet with enchiladas that are really good as well as their chili rellenos (which are even better), and it costs all of $10.95/person so it's a bargain.  The one down side to it is that *everybody* and I mean everybody loves the enchiladas and the chili relenos so you gotta be really quick when they bring out a new tray of them because they both go really fast.  So you could easily spend an hour and a half having brunch there because of the wait time between trays of the rellenos and enchiladas, because they don't cook them ahead of time but instead cook them tray by tray.  Still, it makes for an interesting brunch with a very diverse group of people.

Then the opposite sundays we usually go to a sunday brunch at another restaurant here and have the eggs benedict which is one of my favs if it's done right, and they now know to bring us the wine goblets for our champaign instead of the champaign glasses because we love their champaigne on sundays brunch.  It looks a little wonky having those huge goblets instead of the slender champaigne glasses but we don't care.
