Hey folks,

Just received my invite to the Diablo III beta (it's not covered by an NDA, so we're free to talk about it), and am wondering if anybody else here is in the beta and would like to try out a public or invite only game?

I can't really say much about it yet as it's been plagued with server crashes today, so I've not even gotten out of Tristam as of yet, but hopefully sometime tonight they'll get it sorted out and I'll be able to do some questing.

From what I can say however...
1. I'm not all that thrilled with the art work, I don't find it gloomy in a good sense that others find it.  To me it's just a bit blech at the moment, but hey, this is only Tristram and it is only beta.
2. It's a bit laggy, which is surprising since I can run all the other games that I play (including Skyrim) at ultra max settings without so much as a hiccup.
3. Controlling my character doesn't thrill me, something about not being able to rotate the screen around my toon, or not being able to zoom in and out just feels a little lackluster in the year 2011.

Anyway, maybe they'll get the servers stable so that I can give it another go and have it change my mind, but at the moment I have to honestly say that I'm more looking forward to Torchlight 2 than I am Diablo III, which is a bummer as most who know me know that I've been really looking forward to D3 for the past 5 to 8 years.

I got the beta invite, but truth be told, I'm just not that interested in beta testing a game.  I'm not all that hyped that I absolutely must play it ASAP.  However, based on videos and screenshots I've seen, I do like the art style.  I think why this one lags while your Skyrim (on max settings) doesnt is this is an online game, whereas Skyrim isn't, and I'm sure the server stability and maitenance will be an on-going issue.  Kinda dumb to make a single player game online only and then have these lag issues, but it is what it is...  And as far as controlling the character, it's Diablo, and it's just how Diablo plays.  If Blizzard had changed the actual control of the characters, I'm sure fanbois from everywhere would have marched on Blizzard, and there would have been chaos and mayhem galore.  I'm am surprised to hear about the zoom though, I coulda swore I had read a posting from a beta player saying you could practically zoom right in up behind your character...

Yes you are correct.  It was lagging last night due to the Blizzard D3 server outage.  Once they sorted that out I tried again in the wee hours of this morning and the game is fluid and works perfectly with all settings maxed out.

I did finally find a zoom, it's the Z key (derp) but it only zooms in to the level of how the game zooms in when you open your inventory panel, so it's either all full out (which honestly after now playing for about 5 hours, is not nearly enough out zoom), or into the inventory zoom view.  Nothing in between, before or higher.

It's not terrible of a game, but it's definitely lost it's certain something something, that which Diablo 2 had hooked in me for years, not sure if it's the missing stat point when you level up, or if the items just don't feel as spectacular, or maybe it's just that Diablo is passe and I'm over it already.  Some folks say theres no going back, maybe that counts here too for Diablo.

While I trust Blizzard to keep their online servers running for Diablo 3, just how long can they actually do that once they stop updating the game?  I just played D2 the other day (although briefly) and it just makes me wonder if they will also keep the D3 servers running long after they are no longer selling the game.  Then again, I'm not honestly sure if I'd want to be playing D3 in 10 years from now like I was interested in playing D2 for so long, since D3 just doesn't hook me like D2 did when it was new.

Maybe I've become spoiled over all these years while waiting on D3 to come out with all the other great games that have been released over the years, that might be it.

I'll be getting Diablo 3...  But I'm not exactly sure why.  I never played Diablo 1 or 2 (tried to once a while ago (Battlechest) but couldn't get past the graphics.  I never played computer games as a kid, so was never really exposed to it back then) But it appeals to me, perhaps as filler until Torchlight 2 comes out.  Ironic, poeple used Torchlight as a substitute for thei Diablo fix, whereas I'll be using D3 as my TL2 fix...
