more into my new adventure...
Currently OCing my core i7 920 revision d0, easily got to 3.5 stable without having to change anything really, tried to step to 3.8 but I don't want to bring my vcore up to high (ideally I want to remain at 1.25 or 1.275 at max).
Tried 3.8 with vcore 1.275 and trying to tweak qpi/dram to around the same, but would usually crash after 10 minutes of prime95.

Currently dropped to 3.7 vcore 1.25 qpi/dram 1.25 (I think, either that or 1.275 at max), and dram 1.66v.
Been running prime95 for 20 minutes so far, no issues with load temps so far peaked at 68c, and currently 67 (with cpu temp at 62c peak 63c)

Quite an adventure, and a new learning experience but it has been fun and frustrating, especially after thinking I had a stable clock at 3.8 and go to bed running prime95 only to see it bsod at some point in the night, lol

Can't wait to try FSX at this clock, up from 2.67 (Which steps to 2.8 auto with 1 core) to 3.7 with only a $100 investment into new cooling supplies.  Also brought average case temps down, and my sli setup seems to be running a degree C cooler as well.

(All while working :D, glad I got a server I can use while my main computer does continuous processing operations, lol)

Hi Crowebird

In a back issue of Custom PC there was an article on precisely that subject and they OC'd it to 4.5Ghz on air if memory serves, and it was quite happy. If you are interested I'll go and dig out the relevant settings/timings for you.

I was thinking of giving mine a modest OC until I looked at the performance figures before and after, and for the couple of frame rates gain, the amount of extra power the rig consumed and heat developed - I concurred that it simply wasn't worth it, especially as for 95% of the games we are likely to play at present, these PC's with a decent graphic card are light years ahead of what is needed. The only real advantage is if you are into folding for example and other speed tests, then perhaps the sound of the fans whirling like dervishes is worth it.

Regards Mac

Yea I have a feeling my electric bill will be quite higher :P

But I got it stable at 3.8, I set the vcore at 1.3, but CPU-Z is reporting it at 1.275, but it is not down clocking at all.
I don't care to go past 3.8 as it seems you really have to start upping the vcore to get to 4, and I don't think the engery usage will be worth the payoff for a few more MHz.

I mostly wanted the overclock for FSX to get as much FPS as possible, but I also want to see where else it will take me.  Because I upgraded to SLI 570, my CPU became my bottleneck even with an i7 920 @ 2.8, and I like where I am at.

I now think my memory is my bottleneck, but as part of my CPU OC I did overclock my memory just a bit by upping the qpi/dram to 1.35v but leaving dram to 1.64 (also getting the memory to its true 1600 rating ).
