Smiley Blink  Whilst thumbing through a PC Mag at the Newsagent saw in the game section that 'From Dust' will be available next week Wed July 27th on Steam for digital download - Thank goodness for that, I was wondering if I would ever buy another computer game, looking ahead for the next year, there's nothing that interests me. Games are being pumped (rushed) out, one hackneyed stereotype following another and buggy as hell.

From Dust seems to be a little different from what we had expected, it seems the idea is to play God with the little peeps and guide them by persuasion, or, and, by terraforming the landscape to create beneficial aspects (which can have unforseen consequences) from one end of the mission to the other. Apparently  it harks back to Populous in its origins. From what I can see there's very little building as such and so after mucking about with the landscape a few dozen times, is it going to hold the attention I wonder? From another source it seems it won't be to expensive about £15 so its worth the entrance fee just for the scenery.

Steam also have shots of Stronghold 3 and after looking at them closely, I was left feeling a little under whelmed, as it looks very much like Stronghold 2 with knobs on. I never was a fan of their building artwork and the sight of the horse and cart ploughing waste deep down the side of bridge used to irritate me hugely, and don't mention that scrawny windmill, that and the rest of the amateur build types seems to have found its way unchanged into this latest incarnation, they have had loads of time to improve it, so is it worth the £30 they want for it? I won't be the first in the queue for sure!

After playing the beta of Dawn of Fantasy for a while and seeing the way its going, with must have micropayments to stay in with a chance. I'm non to enthused about this piece of carp either. The early screenshots of the game showed something with huge potential and if this is all they can come up with after eight years work, then I hope they didn't give up their day jobs. One huge mistake - is one's home city, having preset positions for the buildings is bad enough, but its just too damn small to accomodate an army of defenders, let alone reinforcements and with the pathfinding issues and figures getting stuck in the scenery, its going to be a nightmare that no amount of patches and wishful thinking is going to fix.

Oh well! there's AoE3 Online to look forward to, its looking good and I hope Salem Online lives up to its promise, otherwise I can see me giving up gaming through lack of interest and frustration eventually. Hope not as I'll never get that Sandybridge successor - the Ivybridge built with the new generation of PCIe-3.0 graphics.

Nil desperandum

Oh and let's not forget Skyrim coming out later this year, that sounds to me like a good RPG title.

Been looking forward to this one for a while, wondering how intensive the specs will be for it.

Wow, that looks awsome. Not sure the game will have good gameplay in the typical sense, but if nothing else just creating landscapes and messing with them will be a lot of fun.

Nice one CB.

That's rekindled my interest in it, it looks like it has potential and I hope they develop it with add ons and further scenarios. I couldn't help thinking, looking at it with all the sand and palm trees sprouting that it would be an ideal marriage if Tropico 3 could be superimposed into it and instead of dealing with the political issues, focussed on mans' struggle with the environment, nature in the raw and all that. I seem to remember that its not going to be too demanding on resources and will be able to run on some laptops.

Skyrim is going to be huge, if anyone can churn out a successful RPG then that studio can, but forgive me I just can't face another RPG at the moment, its like the Rupert Murdoch story and News Independent, interesting as the story is, but with the news media being completely obsessed with it, the public have become satiated and can't swallow any more and are gagging on it.

The trouble is with gaming it eats up so much time and unless its really worthwhile I don't feel its worth the effort, especially as there's so much else that you can do with a PC, the photo, video and music side for example and design. I just feel that at this juncture games should be far more advanced than they are, instead they are putting out rehashes of what has gone before. The emperor needs new clothes and a complete makeover. With RPG, why don't they go for more interaction with the NPC's, some constructive activities or even building your own clan within a village, - the Guild 2 Online on steroids would be a good example, anything but the remorseless beating up of creeps and monsters and levelling up, people on various forums are moaning about the same thing, so I can't be the only one to feel this way.

The concept of guiding rather than commanding people has an appeal. But somehow I find the geology of the maps too fantastic and a "turn-off" for me.

Terraforming comes in many flavors, I guess.

Also going to be released on xbox live arcade, somewhat a relief for me, wouldn't be able to run it on my PC most likely.

Would you believe it, I read on Gamesfront last night that Ubisoft have announced that the launch date of From Dust has been pushed back to Aug 17th without giving a reason but the site suspects they want to have more time to tweak the anti piracy protection. Some hope! I hope they don't put that draconian DRM on it that ruined Settlers 7 which stopped loads of honest gamers enjoying it and which the pirates had managed to crack in 10 days.
