I've been interested in buying Anno 1404/Dawn of Discovery, but I've had concerns over buying the Gold edition.  I continually see a lot of issues pop up regarding its DRM and activation key problems which worry me (stopped me from biting at the gamersgate sale, in fact).

I am also aware that the box-version of DoD skips over much of its hassles as there's no problems involving activation keys and the DRM was patched out of those.  As a result, I'm debating whether to go for the boxed DoD or still wait out another Gold sale.

The thing is, I'm not particularly interested in most of what Venice has to offer.  Multiplayer doesn't interest me at all, I'm neutral about scenarios, I know I can't design Venetian cities according to another thread here, and so all it really offers is some new buildings/items.

The question for me is: Are the associated headaches and hoop jumping worth those items? I'd like to say yes, but I've been unable to find images (or even a list, though images would be much preferred) of exactly what those new building/items ARE.

The one wikia I found for it only says there are up to 60.  That's all I know though.  I dunno what they look like or what they offer, and it's hard to justify dealing with all the problems I keep seeing related to the Gold edition without that.  I'm kind of hoping someone can post images and say, "See these? This is why it's worth the hassle. "

Or even a "Yeah, these aren't worth it. " would do, though I'd still love some images.  =)

The biggest problem that I've had with DOD -Venice (on steam anyway) is finding a time when Steam is not too busy to let me install it.

I have no images to post, sorry.

Personally I have never noticed the DRM, and I never had any issues with the serial number either. As for what the venice addon adds, I don't think it adds any new buildings from what I recall. It adds a new neutral port to the maps and all the new things that come with that such as new boats, new missions, new honor items and a new honor tree to unlock additional bonuses.

I bought mine from Impulse.

I haven't actually seen anything about problems with Impulse either (I'd actually never even heard of them until yesterday!), so I'll keep an eye out for that one going on sale.  Thanks.

As for new items, I did hunt a bit more on the internet, and according to an amazon review, some of the things new to Venice are:
-bailiwick
-manorial palace (some sort of modular shaping building)
-Two boats (like you said), the small/large tradesmen's cog.

I've seen mentions of other stuff like statues, flower beds and such, but no specific in-game name to look for them by.

I probably will wait it out for a Gold edition though.  Just the palace alone is honestly tempting enough.  Wouldn't mind images of other buildings still, if anybody gets around to posting them though.

If not, it's something I'll probably try to do once I finally get my hands on the game and have time to play long enough to get all the items.  Though that will probably take FOREVER! D=

The biggest thing Venice has to offer is a new trading partner, Giacamo Garibaldi, a handful of new buildings, tons of new quests and superb series of campaigns (almost 20 I think?).  I've never had an issue with the DRM and for me, with the new volcanic islands, the ability to better function w/ espionage, etc, it seems to me that the Add On makes Anno 1404 (or DoD) 'complete'.

Take care,

Here's a link to the official Venice manual, it explains things in slightly more detail:
