Hi CB.
Team Fortress 2  is team based  online.  There is the "Payload" maps where you are either the team pushing the cart to the end, or the team who is trying to stop the cart from getting to the end .  There are a number of checkpoints that the cart is pushed to along the way and once the cart gets to them, the team pushing the cart get extra time. It is loads of fun and my favourite.
There's also Capture the flag sort of, where one team needs to turn the capture points to their colours (blue or red)  and the other team have to try to stop them and turn it back.
Another is where the team needs to grab the briefcase and take it back to their base while the other team tries to stop them.
There are other types of gameplay, but I don't play them and I can't remember what they are called.

Each character has their own special skills.  Example the medic heals and has the uber charge which makes a team member invulnerable temporary.  The Heavy is slow, but is good for plowing down players with his machinegun.  You have the spy which can become invisible and be very sneaky.  The Engineer  can put up Sentries. There's the Scout, Pyro, Soldier etc. All characters have multiple and different skills.
It's best to just go into a game and see what other players are doing really.  You will soon find the character/s that suits your best.  I normally play the medic, but at times I give the ole Heavy a whirl.
As for the shop well, I don't use it - too stingy  Big Smiley Grin Laughing and yes as Bruschev mentioned you pick up drops (better weapons/upgrades etc) ingame.

I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.

I miss TFC.   TF2's gameplay mechanics weren't too fun in comparison.   Still, I may give it a try again some time soon.
