Flaming Mad Just received an email notification from Codemasters to let me know their site had been hacked and details and passwords could be at risk, then in the next email an invite to migrate my free LoTRO account over to the new European one. I think I'll wait a while and see how things develop.

Makes me very conscious of using payment cards online and stick to the major sites, despite this either the Amazon or Play.com site was hacked a couple of years ago and the details sold to bidders online. I was first made aware of this from the Bank, whose fraud prevention team were quickly on to it, (a small amount is processed at first then a second big hit) and if the Bank hadn't been vigilant I would have lost quite a lot, several acquaintenances have been victims recently and I'm becoming increasing wary of online commerce.

I now use a separate card and account for online transactions with a small amount in credit and specific instructions that no overdraft is to be allowed and after the order is processed make sure my account details are deleted from the sellers website.

Hope this is a word to the wise

How does this relate to the stuff I have heard about how the virus spreaders are now running wild with hacking the "apps" on cell phones?

Hi CK.

Only in as much as a considerable number of cellphone users are blissfully unaware of any security threats and take no precautions, like using passwords to protect their files or their voicemail accounts (aka the furore with the News of the World reporters easily hacking into celebrity phones, "allegedly") Its only this year that the public have become more aware of these threats and the likes of Google have made security applications available. When you think of the amount of confidential information stored on cellphones and the careless attitude people have, its a crooked hackers invitation to come and rob them and steal their identity.

I was talking to an IT guru the other day who told me that when he was updating some of the Works and Pensions systems he found that the password they were using was "Password" so that means anyone with a modicum of computer nous could access their files and borrow someone else's details, especially their National Insurance Number with which they could create a whole new identity, its creepy isn't it.

One day governments will have to act as the whole future of the Internet will be threatened and thanks to all these hackers the freedom of the Internet will be curtailed.

PS:  Be careful using EBay its full of crooked sellers and buyers,

Thanks for the info Mac.

I missread one line in your post and cracked-up. I read, ... their voicemail accounts (aka the news of the world) ... LOL

That's what it amounts to if there's no password protection.

The old answering machines for wired telephones had a built-in simplistic code to allow the owner to hear messages from a remote location.

The world becomes more "Borg-like" everyday.
