Smiley Blink  Hurray at last there are some forthcoming game releases which come within the City Building parameter, I've been despairing of whats on offer so far - FPS + FPS + FPS (When will people get tired of these mindless, repetitive bores) and of course RPG - not as bad - but when you've trudged around the scenery, hacked and slashed and quested your life away for the umpteenth time it gets a bit, been there, done it and got the T Shirt. Are game designers ever going to use the computing power potential we have now and come up with something constructive and intelligent which doesn't rely on flash bang destruction. A lot of gun violence has been put down to these bloodthirsty FPS games where the player has become desensitized, losing the power to distinguish between the game and real life.

Well enough of the rant and the first RTS City Builder is Dawn of Fantasy, eight years in production by Reverie and most thought it would never see the light of day, launching June 3rd in the States and June 17th in UK. Its Castle and Village building, resource gathering, mining et al with a proper working economy and then the player can go online and do battle with other players and quest to earn other resources. Its played on a huge map or maps and looks really good, there's also a marine section for trading. Take a look on ign.com where they have some good video footage. Amazon are already taking preorders for £19.99 reduced to £15.99 so its not bad for the price

This may over shadow Stronghold 3 which is due out in August and this looks good too, its been reworked and they say a lot of the niggles have been removed and it features free placement of buildings which improve the closer to the castle they are placed, with a day and night cycle, better A.I. and walls and towers will crumble when under attack. The pics released so far look more realistic, so this looks worth buying (pad 11 and CB - are you taking note? These two were made for you)

Despite Ubisofts profit warning (Anyone Surprised) and consequent clear out - From Dust seems to have survived and will be in our grubby mitts by Q3. I'm looking forward to this one

Another find on my Web trawls was news that the makers of Haven and Hearth using this as a prototype are busy working on Salem which is going to be a MMO set in the New World - New England style landscape and the player will be put in the position of pioneer, - hunting, fishing and crafting and having to build his resources into a sustainable income and fighting to protect them.
This one sounds quite interesting and if they have the money to employ some talented artists to do the landscape justice then they probably will have a winner on their side.

Well that's all folks as the times coming up for the Saturday night security and maintenance blitz - Corr! the things we have to do to try and safe in our PC world.

Best Regards MaxKos   Happy Dance

That's an awesome recap MaxKos! Thanks a ton...definitely some things to look for on the horizon!  Plus you can add Tropico 4 and we're still hearing word of a new Grand Ages game from the good folks at Kalypso/Haemimont, too...although nothing official there...

BTW, I do have the Patrician 4 add on, Rise of a Dynasty and it is visually improved SOOOO much!

Thanks again Max,

The description of Dawn of Fantasy isn't necessarily accurate.  It's not a city builder at all, in the SP mode, it's just skirmishes and conquest.  The online MMO mode is a persistent city, and you do build a Stronghold by dropping prebuilt buildings, then upgrade them.  For example, you cannot custom build walls, you just specify you want walls, and then can upgrade them, but you don't necessariy place them yourself.  Same withthe buildings.  So it's not really city building.  And it's important to note that the stronghold/kingdom building is only in the online MMO mode.

Thank you for the information, I'm very pleased to hear that From Dust did not get stuffed into the Dust bin.

I didn't even know that Patrician IV had an addon, does it add much to the gameplay, and if you have an image or two you want to toss up Pat, feel free.

CB, what the P4 add on adds is stunningly better graphics, inland trade, a more refined character development area and some visual nicities...from the gameplay standpoint, the big adds are inland trade (upping your cities you can interact with to like 34 or something i think), more quests, better assignements, etc....for me, being a fan, definitely worth the 19.99 import...

After looking at it more I found out the same thing and I am not looking forward to the release as much as I was before. When so many things are preset in a game, the game usually becomes very linear, and if it is not boring on the first day, it will get very boring on the second or third.

I recently read that a facebook version of Simcity was being made.. Probably similar to that on the ipod/iPhone app store, either way, not impressed and big middle finger up towards EA.

I saw the iPod touch one and wondered if I should get it or not, I think I chose wisely when deciding not to get it, just looked like dumbed down Sim City 3000..
