Seems the time is upon us.  The witcher (according to Steam) unlocks in 11 hours.  Whoot!

Just wish that I didn't have a dentist apointment tomorrow so that I could be playing.

Anybody getting this?

Absolutely I will.

Just another 2 1/2 hours of downloading to go.  A whopping 16GB, of which I understand 9GB is the game and the extra 6 is the digital extras.

Key features:
  • A truly epic, intense, emotionally charged adventure with non-linear game narration
  • Three independent plot lines with several alternative events are dependent on the player’s choices and lead to multiple different game endings and several additional plot forks. This time gameplay time will be shorter than The Witcher 1, but more intense and packed with events
  • A complex, realistic and mature story touching upon subject matter seldom seen in other RPGs, told in a manner that is understandable and attractive to contemporary gamers. We investigate the assassinations of the rulers of the Northern Kingdoms and follow Geralt’s personal theme, in which he’s looking for his own identity. Gradually we learn how powerful forces influence our situation and what role they order us to play
  • Rich, mature dialogue as found in Andrzej Sapkowski’s book series and The Witcher 1, presented in highly filmic cutscenes and dialogues sequences, thanks to a new game engine
  • New, improved system of flashbacks. Now the reminiscences of Geralt, in which we observe the link between our past choices with current actions, are realistically and smoothly woven into the gameplay
  • Unique, deep, consistent and rich game world established in a series of best-selling books by A Sapkowski and recreated in the game to provide an incredible, believable story-driven experience
  • Believable, true-to-life characters with their own motivations and goals. During our journey we meet ordinary men, soldiers, rebels, powerful mages, rulers and their assassins. Depending on our decisions we meet different game characters, and our relationships shape further actions in the game
  • Highly varied, breathtaking locations, which thanks to the new engine create a cohesive, fully accessible world!
  • Rich, living world in which every character has their own way of life and unique occupations. Our actions modify the relationship with the game-world population and, in the case of the main plot line, open or close the possibilities of interaction with the game world
  • Greater freedom of exploration to provide increased game realism and a wider range of new tactical options. Geralt will surmount barriers, jump over fences, scale walls and ascend rock formations

I think one of the things I'm most looking forward to is the lack of loading screens.  According to a video that I was watching, The Witcher 1 had approximately 170 loading screens, where as The Witcher 2 has a total of 4.  No more loading screens every time that we open a door to walk into a building with TW2 which is awesome good news in my opinion, that really started to get on my nerves so much in TW1 that I dreaded opening doors for a 2 minute talk with some NPC.

Also, supposedly in TW2, the world is very open now, so we shouldn't have to be so limited in where we could go like in TW1.  I remember in TW1 how much I disliked the first chapter and not even being able to jump over the fences to cut across the field to get to where I needed or wanted to go, or the small hillsides that I was not allowed to traverse.  All the videos (which admittedly are rather few) that I've seen on youtube really make it look great.

Graphics in my opinion  (again from the videos) look greatly improved, but I'll reserve final judgement on that for when I actually get into the game and see how they look on my computer.

I'm only concerned that my aging Nvidia 275GTX video card may not be up to the task since I've already seen some complaints on the steam forums with people with the Nvidia 5 series card complaining about frame rates being low.  Although for me anything above 30 is fine, where as some of the people complaining were complaining that they were only getting like 47fps (laugh).

Anyway, good stuff (I hope) to come once it's downloaded.

Yup I do know the feeling of not falling in love with ones avatar, I'm hoping that has changed this time around.  For me it was kind of the lack of customizablity of the avatar and the gear that he would wear.  Im still not certain why Geralt has to look the way that he does and that he couldn't of been customized to a certain extent by the player, and I know that hasn't changed this time either, but I'm hoping that with all the new gear that he can wear, at least I may get some feeling of attachment to my avatar.

The only thing about the first game that has carried over to the second game that I don't really care much for is the whole choosing what type of fighting stance to go with (i.e. heavy, group, cheetah or whatever), I always felt that was gimicky and not necessary at all, and more of a distraction and immersion breaker to me to have to keep switching fighting stances, but it's something I can live with.  Although they have handled it better in TW2, since now you press the CTRL key and it brings up a radial menu while either slowing down time or stopping it and then you can choose it with the mouse out of that menu, which is to me more elegant than actually full out pausing the game to select a fighting stance and then continuing on.

Anyway, I'm talking a lot about the stuff I've seen in videos as I'm still downloading the game Laughing

More later once I've had time to play.

Have been meaning to pick up The Witcher 1 for $10 from the store.. Not sure if my laptop could run it however. Hopefully the second one will be good.

If you have an issue with performance (I did with my 275GTX card) make sure then to download the Nvidia beta 275.xx beta drivers, it improved performance for me in the game thrice over.

Well, I purchased TW2 at Gamestop...what a nightmare getting it installed but thanks to CDProjekt's STUNNING tech support (I got a freaking answer to an email within 20 minutes at 4:30 AM poland time...THAT ROCKS), I'm ready to go...however, CB were you able to get any of the free DLC to download?

Yes, but you only need the Troll one, the other two I believe are for those people that have the non english version but want the english audio and subtitles.

Strange I know you have a much better computer than mine and your computing habbits are far better than mine, but for me it installed and fired right up with no hesitation at all.

I'm enjoying the game, however I must admit that I preferred the combat and movement mechanics of TW1 far more.

I think what you may find is that the game is quite twitchy about picking up loot and activating objects in the game world where Geralt must be placed absolutely in the correct spot (too far away from a loot bag and it doesn't trigger the pickup icons).

Also dear Pat, let me know if you find any hesitation when you instruct your character to move in any direction please.  When I press my W key to move him forward I find that there is this brief 1 to 2 second hesitation before the avatar starts to move in the direction I've instructed it to do so.

CB, from what I've ready, it is NEWER machines and DVD drives that are the problem...I had to copy the discs onto an older laptop and then use an external to get it to install...weird.

yes, the game has a lag before Geralt moves for me to.

Now here's the thing, one hour in and I HATE IT.  Seriously, can the pre-amble to the game be any worse?  This isn't a tutorial, it's a point a to point b hack and slash...ugh.  Please tell me this thing ends soon so I can PLAY the game instead of being dragged around by the nose.  And also, what the hell is up w/ me always jumping into the MIDDLE of every battle?  WHO DOES THAT?  Big Smiley Grin Laughing Big Smiley Grin Laughing Everytime I got to target one knight, I'm leaping into the faces of three or four and I die instantly...and not being able to access any potions right now just blows Laughing

I will push thru and see if it turns into a game or if this is Donkey Kong with swords...however, Triss is freaking hotter this time around so that little cutscene was about worth the money!!! Looking around cautiously Looking around cautiously Sticking Tongue Out!

later,

Hahahahaha, I know what you mean about Triss, I was hoping the better half wouldn't walk into the room behind me all stealth like, like she sometimes does and start blasting me ears about how my game have now turned into adult video games.

You know me man, I'm really slow so I've just left the prologue and am trying to break out of the jail, I'm eye-finger uncoordinated so I'm struggling to hit the W A S D keys when the screen tells me to do so.  It did bother me to be lead by the hand like the prologue does, but it does get better.  I don't know this from actually getting to play it, but from watching maybe 30 or 40 hours of video on youtube, so I knew what I was in for before starting the game.

It truly is one of the worst tutorials I've seen in a while but it should get better, just hang in there with it.

I also imagine that you're playing on the difficult difficulty level, where as I'm playing on the easy level, which is very difficult to get killed in, although I have manged to get killed twice and the first time when it asked me if I wanted to load up a save or quit to the menu, I quit to the menu vowing to never try it again, although about 5 hours later I tried it again and got past the part that I was stuck at.

The part I got stuck at was the balista and having to cockit, aim it and shoot it.  I couldn't figure out how to shoot it, so I got wave after endless wave of enemies coming at me that I had to keep slaughtering until I by sheer luck managed to get Geralt into the correct position around the balista to bring up the fire icons.
