Sad to say, the Tropico Cafe is in a near exclusion zone. Yes, almost all of the 'guest' readers are probably "bots" or the human equivalents. However, there are some who read key threads and seem to lead me to comment on them.

IMHO, the situation is reduced for forums is reduced to the necessity of subjecting new posters to a routine of personal exchanges with the forum owner and\or a committee for admittance to "membership" -- sad, but that seems to be the original idea, eh? The best enemy of "bots" is real people. It takes time and can't be limited to 40 symbols.

well it seems to be working, as we were getting like 100 bot registrations per day and now it's down to around 2 spammer registrations which the spam forum database is picking up.  That's not to say that it's infallable, however it's reduced the amount of spam bot registrations.

I believe it's something that needs to be done before it gets out of hand, I've been to far too many game forums where it's out of control and the first 10 pages are filled with sex porn spam messages and nobody there to even clean it up.

Anyway, hopefully the new captcha system will keep the bots out.  There is pretty much nothing to be done with the real people that register just to spam other than hope we're not first on their list so that they already get reported to the forum spam database before hitting this site first.

That "Forum Spam Database" must be fantasticly busy! Perhaps somewhat like the Manhatten sewer plant.

You seem to have it sorted out but over at Stronghold Knights their spambot problem was so bad they had to make it so that you had to email them with your preffered username etc.  and the would register you.

That seems to have got rid of most of them.

I of course registered the day after they implemented the system.

on one of my sites I had to just turn off registration all together, it was getting about 500 to 1000 spam bot registrations per day, so I turned it off for about 6 months or so, thinking by that time it would be over.  Nope, it was just as bad when I turned it back on.  I think that once a board gets spammed hard like that, theres really no coming back.

I had the problem at my site also (not a forum). I added the IP to my .htaccess file as deny 000.000. Only about one a month or so now. Bad thing is, any one who is legitimate will also be denied.

I know that on some other forums when Moderators were added, spam fell since people then kept an eye out for it, deleted it, and kicked or banned the user. Maybe some of the "Veterans" on this forum should get simple mod powers. Just a suggestion though.

Citybuilder's new captcha system seems to be working pretty well now.
But I'd be happy to help moderate if needed.
