Hope someone is still around who can answer this:

I got this game some time ago and after starting and restarting was finally able to get up to trader status.   After a long hiatus, I started up again and am now on my 3rd restart.   Keep losing money fast.   I do like the game but it can be quite frustrating.   Questioning  I purchase something for someone who has a demand for it and by the time I get there they don't want it anymore.   This happens almost all of the time.   Okay, enough venting.    Looking around cautiously

When I go to my Trade Office it says I need a Trade Office Administrator.   Do you have to get up to Tradesman before you can get one?  And where do you get him from?  I would like to setup the stationary auto trade as per MaxBeta's wonderful tutorial.   Any help would be appreciated.

Albareth, first off, focus less on the missions you're given and more on simply buying cheap and selling for high....it takes TIME but you will eventually build up a nice wad of cash!  As for the Admin, just click on one of your trade office tabs and you'll see the button for hiring Administrator...they can be expensive...so if you are NOT doing any auto trading, do not get one....spend your money on security for your warehouse instead!

Hope that helps!

Thanx for the reply Pat.   I did notice on self controlled trading as per a post by MaxBeta, I went from around 3500 gold to 51,000 gold.   This was just from running Iron, Furs (now Skins), Wine, Cloth and Whales Oil.   Though it can be tough finding sellers I can usually get it all sold.   I have noticed that at least 2 items had there names changed.   Furs are now Skins and Wood is not Timber.   I was beating my head against the wall trying to figure that one out until I noticed that in another game I had been playing my Sawmill was producing Timber and not Wood as the manual said it should have been.

Before working on guards, I think I will get a second ship to work with.    Happy Dance

Definitely get that second ship! And don't be afraid to start a business or two once you get a fleet of 3 or so vessels!

take care,

Thanx a lot Pat you have been very helpful.     I have now amassed over 100k gold but it wont upgrade my status as my rep is still too low.

When you have the time I do have a follow up question regarding a post that MaxB made, which is how I amassed my gold.

Okay, so he lists 5 items to buy and sell and at what price ranges.     For example, Iron purchase when between 300 and 330 and sell when 400 to 430+.     Question is do you continue to buy until the average price reaches the top of the range or when what you are paying for it reaches the top?  I am assuming it is the purchase price and not the avg price and that is what I have been doing.     I had one time where I got some iron at an excellent price.     When what I was paying finally reached the 330 point the average was still only about 305.

Also, is v1. 1 the last version of the game?

Albareth, I definitely buy until my purchase price reaches the top range, but remember, if you drive the average price too high in a city then that hurts your reputation there (making a product scarce in any town isn't good for your rep in THAT specific town)....

Boy not sure where you are Pat but you sure love posting in my early morning 8)  I am in Oregon.   Looking at your profile I would say Seattle based on being Seahawks fan and not many of those would be too far away, though for me I have to admit I am a fan as well.

Now on to more pressing matters.   If you ever get tired of my questions be sure to let me know and I would gladly stop  Crying  hehe

I currently have 4 businesses up and running, sorta.   I am losing money like crazy.   Started today with around 160k and now have 12k.   Currently my building are Grain Farm, Sawmill, Brickworks, and a Workshop.   I was looking at the different buildings you can build and was thinking about the building that provides Pig Iron and the Workshop needs it and I can never have enough due to the exorbitant prices the other cities are charging.   I would love to have much more Iron to sell as that always brings in the bucks.   Oh I also have a Half-Timber House unit, should have made a Merchant House though, and a Warehouse.

Now the question is -- How do you get access to all the other buildings?  Right now I can build the Fisherman's House, Grain Farm, Sawmill, and Hemp Farm from the raw materials section and from the finishing section I can build the Workshop, Brickworks, and Pitchmaker.   I have made it to Trader Reputation in Luebeck.   I will not be able to get to the next level anytime soon as getting to 200k is gonna take a miracle, and I have been praying every time I walk by the church  Laughing

Albareth, well, actually I'm an east coaster!  I live in Pennsylvania...get up at 4:15 each morning to game a bit before scooting the kiddies off to school, get in a work out and get to work!  So yep, I LOVE getting up early  Big Smiley Grin Laughing

Now, getting access to the other buildings means opening counting houses in other cities around the Hanse that produce those resources...you can find out what those cities are by 'i think i recall' right clicking or mousing over their map icons....

Also try to steer clear of trying to produce items in towns where they are not produced efficiently...if you find the town center, each city has a little statue or monument...click (or right click, can't remember!) on it and it will tell you what products are produced efficiently and which are produced marginally!

This is all assuming you're playin P3 and not P4...P4's interface is a bit different...

pat!

Please pardon my intrustion,
but while your attention is here --
 Looking around cautiously

@ Pat (pad11) (resident expert)

1> To what depth does "Patrician" carry the simulation of the Hanseatic League. Well - at least in a 'thumbnail' description. It sounds as if it attempts more than a glancing smack at it. How much would reading the Wikipedia article help a player who is not already a history nut?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanse

2> Would an historical background on the actual commodities traded help a player? Perhaps I should say, what kind of production chains does the game use, and are they explained? For example, I see pitch-works mentioned in this thread. Actually, I would expect the English term to be tar-works, and tar to be one of the major components of "naval stores." Tar and hemp were the essential materials for a rope works. Salt and stock fish were in high demand in monasteries and nunnaries, especially during Lent. (A strange translation problem - the archaic German for whale oil is usually translated "train-oil" - perhaps for the after full rendering which suits it for lamps; lamp-oil was another common term for whale oil during its period.) The demand for (barged) grain was highly dependent on weather patterns which produced poor harvests and therefore local shortages.

Hey, I babble on, but I'll appreciate your thoughts in response.

I think that the game tries to stay EXTREMELY TRUE to the historical data at the time...it takes into account the affect that the seasons had on shipping/production/etc., it is very steeped in politics, etc.  The econcomic engine is, in my mind, the best ever created for a sim game of any kind.  While the production chain only goes two deep (there are no three and four item production chains), it is stable and sensical.

so the short answer to your questions is yes, any history buff is going to have an advantage in this game....reading up on the Hanseatic League will be of benefit, no doubt....
