Yeah Gads CocoNut Kid where are you off to? I'd be happy to have a discussion with you on a different forum or even a separate post in City Dump maybe perhaps you could include matriarchal society in the Bronze age and both Mat and Pat in the Iron Age but I haven't got my History hat on at the moment and anyway now CB is a full blown moderator  on the other forum, and easy going on this, he may well object to this particular post degenerating away from its original theme.

Its all about finding worthwhile alternatives to play whilst nothing in our genre is being released at the moment. I've got two system networks one for Win 7 and one for XP and most of these older games would have no chance on the former (one or two are causing XP to gag  even in compatibility mode with graphic/catalyst issues and its a matter of how much play value the game has got to how much time I can spend sorting out the problem. I may just resurrect a perfectly good P4/X850XT with Win 98 loaded and a 19" CRT screen, I don't know whether its worth throwing £200 at old legacy hardware because I'm looking at a new Mobo for starters.

Moon Tycoon looked really promising on a 22" LCD screen (building a city on the moon with trading and exploration) and ran for about an hour before the graphics threw a hissy and crashed, its only available on Deep Sea Tycoon/Deep Sea Tycoon 2 and for less than a fiver for the three is peanuts, the others are all really good value ranging from 1p upwards and I'm just passing  this info on for the benefit of the forum, in case anyone is interested and because for the last three months there has been no serious discussion and very little activivity and I for one don't want this forum to wither for lack of interest because CB puts a lot time and effort and not to mention cash into keeping this unique site going.

Do I understand correctly that you are saying that there is absolutely, positively NO possibility of playing older games on a computer which uses the latest edition of Windows?

Not sure about 32 bit Windows vista and windows 7 but for 64 bit versions the following should apply. If they are dos games then using dosbox you could probably get most of them to work both on vista and windows 7. If they are old 16 bit windows games then you won't be able to get it to work without a modified exe. If they are old 32 bit games then its probably 50-50 chance for it to work. Often you will need some fan-made patch or a lot of tinkering to get it to work.

Thanks Virmin, I appreciate the reply.

Now, the pitiful part: Where does one look to determine the "bit" version of the OS and of the game?

Go into Control panel and then System Properties, in there you should see whether your OS is 32bit or 64bit, but I'm going to guess that if you don't know yourself, then it's likely to be 32bit, but best to check.

As far as games go, one usually needs to simply take a look at the specs to see if they support 32bit or 64bit or both.

I don't think older games ever mentioned the bit version that they are compatible with. Seems to me that its only since the 64bit operating systems came out that newer programs say that sort of thing in the spec requirements. Basicly if I get the error message that the program can't open because its not compatible with my 64bit windows then I assume it must be a 16 bit program. How to tell if its 16 bit or not for certain I really don't know. You could get an idea though based on what the latest windows operating system was available when the program was made. For instance if the game lists windows 3.1 or windows 95 as a requirement then its perhaps a safe bet that the program is 16bit.

Tried that -- no joy. Dozens of things, but no "bits."

These older games date back to 2002/2003 and others are 2005/2007 and are updated to be compatible with XP Pro 32bit, I never intended to put them on the Win 7 64bit system. All of them load and play and run perfectly, all but two, which after about 30 mins throw a video driver error message (ati2dvag) on the Ati 1950 Pro or the Ati 3870 system and Blue Screen. Its a video driver incompatibility, not the OS. The titles are Black and White 2 and Moon Tycoon. The digital monitors resolutions of 1920x1080 and 1650x1050 might be one of the problems as Moon Tycoon max resolution is 1024x768 so I might just hook up an old 19" CRT monitor and see how that goes, and there are various other things I can try.

Those Dos box Retro games are way too far back and have never held any appeal for me. Overall the experiment/investigation went well and the purchase of the 10/12 games of this era has been a success and should offer loads of gameplay

Regards Mac

PS Anybody looked at Saga (The MMO Game)
