Holiday Presents  Happy New Year to all the forum

On my search for interesting games with a bit of depth and imagination I came across this one, its called Saga - www.playsaga.com and its now free to play with the exception of some bonus stuff and from my first impressions it looks rather good, visually (better than the screen shots) with an attractive, uncluttered GUI. The theme is Nation kingdoms which you gradually build in real time, collect resources and battle with your foes. There's a lot to it and I'm gradually easing myself into it. Its like a decent version of Stronghold 2 with knobs on, Pat, you should love this!

I've bought some games from Steam which have been on offer, like Overlord 2 which is fun but I'm stuck on the Tutorial ( where you have to hold down both mouse buttons and get your minions to storm the ice fort, there doesn't seem to be any way of getting them up there-Any Ideas?) Also Amazon games are well priced and I'm waiting for delivery of several, One that looks good is RollerCoaster Tycoon 3, the firework display in the demo is a little cracker, also Deep Sea Tycoon 2 which has Moon Tycoon included which will go nicely with my Startopia game ( Chugging along with that,  finding it very likeable but heavy going. also Railroad Tycoon 3 and Wild Earth Africa and Wildlife Park 2, The whole lot was was just over a tenner and needing something for my older XP systems, anyway- should keep me busy during this horrible Winter.

I bought a copy of Black and White 2, mainly for the City Building aspect because the visuals for a 2005 game are outstanding but it caused havoc with my XP systems, one Bluescreened and the other lost its video driver - both at the same point in the Tutorial, looking on their forum it seems a very buggy game. I'm almost tempted to resurrect an old P4 system with an ATI 850XT to see if it would be happy with that because the game doesn't recognize the ATI 1950 or the ATI 3870. Its funny the programme isn't written to be backward compatible maybe, yet no problems with other games of that era or even earlier.

Hope you're alright CB, saw on the news that Southern California was getting a pasting with the floods and the rest of America was getting hammered with snow storms, makes you wonder about Britain where a fraction of that amount brought the whole country to a standstill.

Oh well onwards and upwards

Best Regards

Mac

Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 is a lot of fun. I hope you got the gold or platinum edition which comes with one or two expansions respectively as they add a lot more variety to the game. Its one of those games where your creative side can merge with the purposefull side nicely as the game balances function with aesthetics.

Railroad Tycoon 3 has a lot of promise but there were a few things about it that kept me from enjoying it as much as I had hoped to. Aesthetically it annoys me how the railroads sit on an unusually high mound of gravel. Functionally the supply and demand model, although very realistic in its mechanics, is far too sensitive. If they made the sensitivity more balanced it would be perhaps the best supply and demand models in any game. As it is, a single delivery of goods tends to equalize the prices of that item between the source and the area that demanded it. Making it so that only the first load of goods makes any money while every load after that is peanuts. In fact simply connecting two areas with railroad, from what I recall, will equalize prices to some extent since the railroad itself represents a degree of accessibility.

Thanks for that, yes I'm looking forward to their arrival RCT 3 in particular, when I played the demo I started a pre-made mission and put a few kiosks and additional rides on and just let it roll. Sometimes when I'm feeling lazy, or occupied with something else its nice to have a game where you set a few parameters and let it virtually play itself. These older games have what's lacking today mostly chutzpah- well designed, imaginative, almost too much gameplay. I also ordered Railway Pioneer which is set in the US in the early days of steam, where you have to send out scouts to recce ahead and design and build your railroad but with slightly less business management than RT 3. If I'm not careful I'll end up with a Railway Simulator, Anorack a go-go. I'm stocking up because I read in Web User that its reckoned that CD's will be defunct by 2015 and DVD's by 2018, so these little beauties may become collectors items.

Whatever, but scanning through the expected forthcoming releases for this year, there is nothing remotely looking like a City Builder in the offing, I've never known such a thin time. I like RTS as well but since I've almost given up on RPG - I can't face one more hack and slash, have six unopened titles including The Witcher Platinum version unexpurgated - any offers?

One ray of sunshine is that Dungeons is due for arrival in February, like Dungeon Keeper 2 in glorious 3D and a slightly different take on the subject, there is also From Dust which looks promising. Oh! and not forgetting Stronghold 3. The game producers have gotten it into their heads that consoles and MMO's are the way forward, you can't blame them in a way because the development costs for producing a half decent title are horrendous these days.

The New Year in Britain is welcomed in with VAT tax going up to 20% so I'm busy at the moment pricing up parts and getting them ordered before Jan 4th. It looks like a year of angst is heading our way. Well at least PC gaming is cheaper than going to the pub   Questioning

I am looking forward to your observations on Railway Pioneer. I'd love to have a reasonably good simulation of ante-bellum railroading. Wooden rails with strap-iron tops; linch-pin couplings; brakes operated per car; large train crews with those forgotten jobs - brakeman, switchman, etc.

I also wonder how the VAT regulations deal with body lotions used by prostitutes - does the prostitute or the customer have to pay on the value added to the lotion and or to the body? When does final consumption occur according to the tax authorities? Perhaps your MP could ask the government about that for you.

Coconut Kid, you're an absolute mine of information, what were you in your past life - a History Professor?

Don't get your hopes up too much with Railway Pioneer, its a bit basic, but the graphics are very nice ,considering. It doesn't go into quite the depth of detail that you outlined ie laying rail with sleepers and fishplates etc, its put down ready built in sections. At the moment I'm stuck as how to get the scouts moving, the tutorial is a bit sketchy. The best way is to DL the Demo from your favourite site and give it a try, the game was only £1.99 from Amazon so there's nothing to lose

About your other point - Where did that come from? What's that got to do with things, I think your talking about Massage Parlours, for anything else give the Chicken Ranch outside Las Vegas a ring  Laughing

My comment on the final use point of body lotions for the purposes of the VAT was intended to be entirely satirical. As with any sales tax, the amount of revenue is directly proportional to the level of inventiveness between the tax definers and the tax payers. Smugglers are the brute-force answer to the silly tax definitions.

Professor is way above my former pay grade. I just have some hobbies which seem to revolve around history. I try to be as accurate as I can.

What does RailRoad Pioneer do with train size and crews? I didn't expect much accuracy about tracks. I was just dreaming. Actually a useless dream. It's a "JoWooD" product with the usual inactive website. No one has paid any attention to a bad release since 2004. Europeans building games about America for bored pre-teens.

I apologize!

I didn't mean to "sucker" anyone. Perhaps I should discuss the ancient history of marriage.

Marriage got its start as the regularization and legalization of OT content deleted due to reader complaint.
