The steam client is the platform that you need installed to download and launch the games you buy through steam. ...

In other (or plain) words, the "client\platform" is a program (AKA application) which is similar to "Internet Explorer Browser" and all the other programs which run within the "Windows" Operating System. It has a limited purpose and limited capabilites (so far as the user is allowed to know), but the fancy language makes it seem so friendly.

This post is not meant as a flame toward you or your reply!

All governments are constantly battered for confusing and obscure language in the material they push upon the public. Yet who pushes the most obscure language using newly manufactured words dreamed-up by computer geeks? Who tells Bill Gates to cause his empire to start using plain English to describe how "user friendly" computer stuff works? The computer industry is the thousand pound gorilla to whom no one tells anything. Except when the bubble bursts.

BTW - are you ready for the next bubble burst? The economy is not really recovering and can't because it is both constipated and also exhausted by spending for war.

Just give it some Pepto Bismol and it'll be fine lol.

I believe a client is also an app but an app isn't necessarily a client. My understanding of it is that a client, at least in this scenario, is an app that is used to operate and maintain another application(s). In this case Steam is used to operate install and maintain all the software you have bought through steam. Thus it is often, appropriately, referred to as a client.

The client is the small programme that is installed and from there the rest of the files are downloaded from "steam".
Here are a couple of screenies of my steam programme.

It is a very unobutrusive programme and will auto update with patches if the developers have released any for games.

The Steam store where you can find the goodies to buy:

My game Library: At present I am playing about with Oblivion.

The Community heading is where you can add comments if you are in a group.  Eg I am in a Teamfortress group, Half Life, and here folk can write comments etc.

The News heading is the latest gossip on game updates etc.
Hope this gives you a bit more insight into Steam.  Hello and Welcome
