I'm not really sure if that's a game 'game' or if it's some sort of instructional guide for the best way of dealing with our problems in our environment. Laughing

It say's:
Solve real-world business, environmental and logistical problems. Learn how technology can revolutionize these industries. Discover for yourself how these solutions are enabled by Cloud Computing, Business Process Management, and Collaborative Application design. Explore the steps needed for companies within these industries to progress and evolve, maximizing customer satisfaction and become truly smarter.

Research the key technologies behind the solutions showcased in CityOne. Begin your journey to smarter work by exploring how connecting processes, people, and service-oriented technology can help you adapt to new demands and build a sustainable advantage in an ever-changing world.

---
It sounds less city building game and more city or better still... business management type of game.  Still, it sounds interesting, and I've signed up for their email when the game goes live.

Thanks for bringing it up.

And according to this video, it appears to be a 'turn based' game, note near the end of the video when they show the GUI, the button on the bottom bar on the far right says "end turn', so definitely not city building game but still looks like it may be good fun unless it turns out so dry that it's unbearably beauracratic nonsense.

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/Tmf0ugQrDFk&rel=1" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/Tmf0ugQrDFk&rel=1</a>

More information found:
The game challenges players to take on many of the problems facing real cities today—overcrowding, inefficient energy infrastructure, stagnant small business economy, etc.—and design smarter cities that can sustain and encourage the growth of a prosperous population in the future.

The idea here, presumably, is that it's always a good thing to educate the populace about the these sorts of problems, and, hey, who knows, someone might unwittingly stumble on a solution we can actually use. At the most recent TED conference, Jane McGonigal gave an impassioned talk on games and their potential to solve real world problems, and IBM's CityOne certainly seems to be what she had in mind

Tried it, less of a game and more of a ummm, learning experience.

You are presented with problems in business, and you choose an action to try to solve it.  The actions seems like real life possibilities, for example my first turn told me that in a retail establishment one of the clerks did not check out the customer properly, when I click on actions, it listed 3 actions, like outsource data checking to a 3rd party company, increase staff size to check the data and something else.  For the one that I chose, it told me that it cost me 3000 and it increased the price of the product for the retailer.

So, yeah to me, not so much a game as it is some kind of business simulation.  Capitalism 2 was a game, this, I don't think it is even though they call it a game.

Yes, exactly.

I kept waiting, half expecting them to try to sell me something.  Or maybe have one of those popup windows where there is a live sales agent on the other end that will try to help me to buy something I don't really need.

Got my first email from IBM, says:

Dear Pat,

The CityOne game is a great way to understand how working smarter can help solve real-world problems. Now take it a step further. See how you can start to put those techniques and technologies to work in your organization.

The brief shows you specific examples of how leading organizations are using Smart Work practices to become more agile, innovative and successful. It really works. Discover a new way of looking at how your organization approaches work and uncover the technologies and techniques to start working smarter.

--- END EMAIL ---

I'm willing to bet that IBM has all the solutions that I would need to put those techniques and technologies to work for me.
