There can only be one.......thousand !

Hey guys.

I was sitting here with a week full of free time on my hands and my shiny new copy of Risen.  after two full days of the old Rpg grind i stopped and felt
as usual slightly repulsed by the fact that i bought yet another game with too many high hopes and expectations it could not possibly meet.

As such i went into my usual recovery mode which is to default to any older game that i truly love but alas ! Dungeon keeper II i have been unable to
get to work on Windows 7 64-bit.

BUT ! startopia works ! and i find myself blissfully bleary eyed this morning after a late night of managing dem alienz, made me wonder, whatever happened to this kind of innovative, risky and creative style of game deveolpment, the kind filled with zany new ideas and comical yet complex content ? I can think of a few that i enjoyed, Simgolf, Alien Nations, Evil Genius, Space Colony, Syndicate etc, they might not all have been pure City builders but they where glorious nonetheless.

And for the love of all that is gaming holy, when, WHEN dear builders will there be a worthy successor to the mighty Transport Tycoon ? ( Open TTD does a great job but seriously, ACTUAL rendered 3D would be so much tastier than sprite animations ).

Does anyone know where these old devs are, and what they working on ? would be great if there was hope. . . .

Heard a disturbing rumour that some asian company bought the rights to Dungeon keeper and that DK 3 is going to be a mmorts.  Say it are not true !

Peace

There's a Dungeon Keeper clone coming out sometime, and a new 3d transport game coming out soon (http://www.citybuildergames.com/index.php/topic,2217.0.html), not sure if you can build in it or just manage the transportation and purchasing etc.

Try this for Dungeon Keeper on Windows 7, and this for DK2.  Hopefully that will work.

I loved Startopia, Syndicate, Sim Golf, Evil Genius and other similar games.  Would be great to have more like that.

It's the first time that I saw info about that DK clone but the images look definite of resembling DK2 I think.  Will be nice if they keep it in the same funny haha way that was the original.

I always thought that StarTopia was an excellent and under appreciated game and found out later in life that so was Evil Genius, a brilliant game for it's time.

I believe Chris Sawyer, the guy who made Transport Tycoon and Locomotion, is now retired. Or at least retired from the gaming industry. I'm surprised though how many people have clung to Open TTD and not migrated to Locomotion. I played the original Transport Tycoon for many years, not aware that there was a TTD nevermind a community working on a OTTD, and yet I found Locomotion to be a great improvement in most areas and so I can't bring myself to go back to TT.

I liked the bright colors of the world, the style and growth of the cities, the city interactions like advertisements and such, the way you could buy shares of a company, and the music of TT the best. But pretty much everything else is better in Locomotion. The graphics, the animations, the railway layouts, the bridges, the tunnels, the routing, waypointing, oneway signals, etc. I realize OTTD has implemented some of these features but the graphics and railway/roadway customization and animations are still far superior in Locomotion.

I tried my very best to like Locomotion, but it just never grabbed me the way that Open TTD managed to do.  I dedicated several months of my life to OpenTTD.  Plus the way that Locomotion has us designing our railways was fine in RollerCoaster Tycoon, but it was extremely dated and fidgity for me to work with constructing one block at a time by pushing a button and far too outdated for when it was released.  I seem to remember Sawyer writing something to the effect that he did Locomotion to complete his own desire to do so and not really for the fans of any of his earlier titles.

I don't know, the guy had some good ideas in the RCT series, but he never seemed to make the jump to modern gaming and tried to stick to his tried and true methods of games that he created which never really hit it in the modern market again.  Which makes me not surprised to hear that he might have retired now, and perhaps even a forced retirement since the games that he did were so antiquated in later life.  However, I think it's possible that he's a very misunderstood character and many things that he's said have been taken out of context which might lend to his being misunderstood at times.

I'm sort of curious to know if anyone here has considered the bridge between the physical, scale model builders and the computer "gaming" world.

Trainz seemed to try to be a way for the model builders to use a computer "simulation" to build models in the virtual world.

But -- as the old saying goes, you can't boil the ocean in grandma's tea pot. So what part of the real world do you wish to have in your virtual world?

Smiley Blink  Dirk, I can't agree more, looking at what's been released this year, although technically and visually brilliant are dumbed down and seem designed for the FPS,RPG crowd. The main reason producers have got it in their heads that there is no money in PC gaming and that console is the way to go and  FPS and RPG can be ported over more easily and played with a controller.

This is a misnomer because PC sales are a lot more buoyant than retail sales suggest - the sales on download sites like Steam, GamersGate etc aren't included in the charts so distort the volume considerably. With the added interest in MMO and MMORPG it looks like our genre is going to be overlooked and become a niche market supported by Indie developers. I've looked through the new releases for 2011 and it doesn't make for very good reading, very little for us.

I've been trawling through Gamefaqs gamelists looking for any interesting, querky titles and funny that you mentioned Startopia, it was one of the titles that I ordered - Black & White 2 being another. As I type I hear a heavy drop in the hallway, the postman has brought my Christmas presents, not bad considering the weather we've had lately, hopefully they have arrived.

If anyone wants a fun, light hearted game for free there's one that looks quite tasty - Dash and the Stolen Treasure, DL at www.dashthegame.com - vibrant 3D graphics. there's a video on the site to give a taster, its only 166MB   Holiday Presents

All the best
