For those that remember, I put together a new computer around February of this year.  Well, since about March of this year I've been experiencing problems installing software, it started out that anytime that I would install a program that was in a .msi it would lock up my computer with 100% cpu cycle time on all 4 cores, making the computer unresponsive until I would reboot by using the power button to shut it down.

Last month it started to happen with .exe program installations too, not always but often enough to really start to bug me.

Last night I tried to install Ventrillo for a guild that I joined in one of my MMO's and it too locked up my computer at 100% cpu time used on all 4 cores.  I finally got sick of it, and was about to do a reinstall of my O.S. but decided at the last minute to try Ventrillo once more, so this time instead of powering off the computer I just let it run for about 30 minutes in this unresponsive state until I finally got an error message to pop up telling me that the Installer Service could not be started, or was not running or something to do with the Installer service.

So I finally had an error message to help me find the cure and looked it up on google and found instructions on Microsofts site for how to fix this in Win XP and just followed those instructions since there were no instructions for Win 7, which entailed not much more than re-registering the msiexec.exe program in the registry, rebooting in safe mode to do that and then rebooting once more back into regular windows.

So after that I rebooted to regular win 7 and tried to install Ventrillo once more and sure as rice is white, the program installed without so much as even a hiccup.  My computers only one problem has now been solved and I'm very pleased about that and that I didn't have to reinstall Windows and all my games and other applications all over again which would have taken me days this time with as much as I have installed.

And what was the problem attributed to?  According to the page on the Microsoft site, it's possible that when Installed Microsoft Office, it deregistered the installer services.  How's that for F.U. Customer, please install our office program for hundreds of dollars, so that we can mess up your computer.

wow... you would think that if they know the problem exists, they would try to fix it...
but why in hell would they make it able to deregister the installer service in the first place... seems like a pretty important service to be available at all times...

at least you got it fixed without having to reinstall everything.

My speculation, 'Once you have Office, what else would you ever need?'

Then again, perhaps it is just passing a little business along to the local mechanic (e.g. The Geek Squad) that one has to hire to keep the "finely tuned" machine running.

Possibly, someone down in the third level of the mushroom factory threw that in as a 'quick & dirty' for a few dozen of the 10,000 security holes -- and then forgot about it. You know that the different levels in the mushroom mine don't talk to each other -- except by reading what is posted for customers, and who has time for that?

Big nasty pile of Poop

But anyhow, thanks to CB for the info!   Wink Wink
