... And what was the problem attributed to? According to the page on the Microsoft site, it's possible that when Installed Microsoft Office, it deregistered the installer services. How's that for F.U. Customer, please install our office program for hundreds of dollars, so that we can mess up your computer.

My speculation, 'Once you have Office, what else would you ever need?'
Then again, perhaps it is just passing a little business along to the local mechanic (e.g. The Geek Squad) that one has to hire to keep the "finely tuned" machine running.
Possibly, someone down in the third level of the mushroom factory threw that in as a 'quick & dirty' for a few dozen of the 10,000 security holes -- and then forgot about it. You know that the different levels in the mushroom mine don't talk to each other -- except by reading what is posted for customers, and who has time for that?
