Hi all,

I stumbled on to this site purely by accident and couldn't believe my luck in finding it.  What a great site!

I am in the process of trying to find somewhere in Australia that still sells Anno 1404 Dawn of Discovery, because I've never played it but it looks like something I would enjoy.  It seems to be out of stock in stores and online stores though so I'm doing my best to track it down.

Also, I've seen a few posts on here so far about Tropico 3.  My husband seems to think it had bad reviews . . . . can I get some honest opinions please?

Lastly - when did Settlers 7 happen???!!!! Have I been a sleep? The last Settlers I bought was No. 5!!!

I have seen  Anno 1404 recently in EB games.  I dont think its called Dawn of Discovery  in Oz.  Even if an EB games store dont have it on their shelves they can search other stores for availability.  I think it is also available on line from Gamesplanet where you can also get the Venice expansion.
I have Tropico3 but in my opinion its a waste of space.  I think its childish.  Grand Ages Rome might be worth a look, it will suck you in for a couple of months.

Thanks for that website tip.  I had a quick look and they only have the original on DS, and the Venice expansion for PC.  I have the expansion - it's the one I could actually still get, but can't find the original game for PC.

Becky, this UK company ships to the US, so I'm sure they ship to Australia as well...and the price is awesome!

Yes it is a great site -- we are lucky to have it.  Happy Dance

I'm the old addict of Tropico 1.  My 2 Cents
Actually, the Tropico 3 reviews are all over the map, both as to bugs - big coding problems and lots of systems incompatibilities - and as to silliness in gameplay. Lots of stuff is not at all intuitive and is not adequately explained in the manual. The only strategy guide I have heard of is in German. One thing for sure is that the "challenge editor" is full of bugs. The expansion, Absolute Power, was used to fix some bugs (selling bug fixes isn't a happy notion  Flaming Mad), yet it introduced some more bugs of its own. While I don't know what is happening on the registered owners site, the traffic on the Kalypso forum and Cafe Tropico has tapered way-off. Unless you can get it very cheap on a sale, and are prepared to fight it to get it to run on your PC -- there are other games you are far more likely to enjoy.  Thumbs Down

Pat speaks the truth.   (Me =  Soapbox Speech with tape across mouth  )

Here is a review (sort of) that takes a different approach:

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Tropico

Laughing  Looking around cautiously

SAMPLE

Tropes Used:
Artificial Stupidity:
In almost every video game ever made, there are some characters controlled by the computer. These can be categorized into one of three groups:

  • Set pattern. The computer actually makes no decisions, the enemies will make the same moves every time regardless of what the player does. Most of the enemies in Super Mario Bros fit this category.
  • AI Roulette. Again, the computer is not making decisions per se; it is simply choosing a move at random. This type is often seen in turn-based Roleplaying Games.
  • Analytical, or responsive. In this, the computer actually chooses a move based on the situation. The ghosts in Pac Man fall into this category, which at the time was considered impressive.
.
It is in this third group that Artificial Stupidity can be found. AS is when the AI can select a move for its character(s), and consistently chooses ones that are completely stupid. While it is very rarely included on purpose as a balancing factor, such as to balance out the fact that The Computer Is A Cheating [*******], Artificial Stupidity is often a result of poor programming; the programmers simply didn't program the AI not to make that move, and when the AI evaluates its choices, the poor move looks like the best one. (It's far more likely that The Computer Is A Cheating [*******] will be introduced to compensate for Artificial Stupidity rather than the other way round.)

Because I make an extensive edit to my previous post, it seems fair that I should provide another example for the benefit of the folks who are following via the Email notices since they don't see the edits.

The Television Tropes & Idioms review also says Tropico uses the 'Dirty Communists Trope.'

Dirty Communists are, essentially, Cold War villainous portrayals of the Soviet Union's people or servants. After World War Two, there was a very large propaganda effort to make them stock villains the same way the Nazis have served pretty much ever since.

Dirty Communists are different from portrayals of the Soviet Union as an enemy because an especial effort is made pretty much to dehumanize them or reduce them to bad guys through elaborate measures. Special attention is brought to emphasizing all those wacky tropes found in In Soviet Russia Trope Mocks You for example.

Dirty Communists have never quite caught on in fiction the way that Those Wacky Nazis have. This may be due to the fact that the left-leaning politics of many in both entertainment and the media deliberately to downplay and even cover-up Soviet atrocities, or the fact that communism as an ideology is more morally ambiguous than Nazism, making its adherents less unsympathetic. In Russia, communism is even more controversial; there are some who completely agree with its portrayal as an evil ideology, some who have strong My Country Right Or Wrong feelings, and still kicking supporters of communism. Nevertheless, it remains a significant legacy that many authors still like to use.

With the end of the Cold War, this has become a mostly Discredited Trope, though it oddly has a lot more universal success with Post-Soviet villains than it has ever had with actual communist ones. Not so odd if losing the Cold War proves that Communism is Evil, which makes those who continue to promote it designated villains.

One associated Trope: Cold War
The period of high tension between Western-style democracies (led by NATO and the USA) and communism (led by the USSR and the PRC), lasting roughly from the "Iron Curtain" speech of 1946 to the Malta meeting in 1990 - historians disagree on the precise start and end dates, with one going as far as to date its beginning to Red October. There was no direct fighting between the two superpowers (Well, there was the whole Soviet pilots flying North Korean planes against Americans in Korea, the shooting down of Gary Powers, the fatal shoot down of Rudolf Anderson while flying over Cuba during the Missile Crisis -- but you get the idea.) although many indirect conflicts flared up (Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, etc).

Most famous for the sheer amount [number] of nuclear weapons amassed by several countries, most notably the USSR and the USA. Highly influential in many a Spy Drama during this period, as setting or Back Story, such as Airwolf, The A Team, etc.

MY, 'Tropico' has only the most vague reference to the 'Those Wacky Nazis' in the set-up for El Presidente. That's too bad because Fascism was an important sub-theme in the political situation in "Latin America" post WWII.
