Been playing this game for a week or so, the guide here is very helpful.   Some things I can't figure out, though:

Where do you buy spices?  The manual says:
"8. 5. 3 Imports
The Hanseatic League region will regularly get deliveries of salt, fur and wine from the hinterland and deliveries
of spices from the Mediterranean.  The first three commodities will be delivered to three towns, spice
imports to six. "
Ok, I've found only one town that had significant amounts of spices so far and it ran out pretty fast.   How do you figure out which 3 towns get the spices deliveries?  Are they always the same or what?

Should I only buy weapons for my ships from the weapons dealer in my home town?  He seems very slow to produce ship weapons and cutlasses.

When checking out info on each town, they have 2 lists of supplied goods.   One is called "effective" or something.   Are goods in that list produced at a higher rate?  Or do businesses in that town making those goods get a production costs break?

Is there any point to shipping overland?  Can it be automated?

Giving to the poor at the chapel doesn't seem to increase my numbers of beggars.   Do I need to provide ALL of the listed goods (fish, grain, meat, beer, wine) to trigger a beggars increase?

Town population in general seems to grow slowly even when there's plenty of houses and the people are happy.   Pace of making new buildings is always waiting on those beggars to show up and fill the last batch of businesses.

Ok, ima jump in on this one,

1. The only real way to get a good supply of spices is to go intothe med and get them yourself (if you have been playing for a week or so this likely wont apply to you for a few more weeks ^^).  I think AI controlled players usually dump spices in London and Brudges.

2. Keep him supplied with leather and iron goods (this is done by keeping the town supplied in them) and he will produce just as fast as everywhere else. Also depending on when you started the game you may not have certain weapons unlocked, you get higher "tier" weapons by using the same ship person (i thinkkkkk)

3. Effective means if you have that kind of business there it produces more then a town where the same good is on the other list (i forget what its called now)

4.Shipping overland between Hamburg and Luebeck can be helpful, as its faster then sailing all the way around (but it costs more).  I don't ship overland enough to know if it can be automated ^^

5. It takes time to work (or so i presume, i don't really donate much....)  You shouldn't have to do one of every kind.

6. Keep a town well supplied and "happy"and beggars and more people will turn up ^^

if you have anymore questions about this fantastic game, or what imeant by something, don't hesitate to ask, i imagine someone else (Que pat) will see then soon and help much more then i did :P

Thanks for the help masman.

Here's a few more:

7.  Ok, I'm doing one of the alderman missions.   The one to create a new town.   I built the town office buildings like town hall and  weapons dealer, then a bunch of houses and factories.   Problem is, the town population stopped at 500 even though it has full satisfaction, lots of free beggars, room, etc.   Do I have to finish the town wall for the population to get above 500?

8.  Are any of the other alderman missions easier?  This one has used up basically all my empire's bricks for a few months. . .

9.  Some towns I've developed quite a bit, to the point where there is no more room in the walls for new buildings.   Is there any way to get the town to expand it's walls, short of moving my office to that town?  Should I only build factories outside of the walls to conserve space?

10.   Why do pirate ships dissapear on the big map?  I'll be tailing them with a ship and they just vanish for a few minutes, especially when near a coastline.

11.   What's the difference between archers, crossbowmen, and gunmen for defending a town?  I see the gun guys cost more, do they target different enemy types?  Do I need a mix of all 4 soldier types?  Should I max out my town guard?  My home town has 30 soldiers but has never been invaded.   The other towns get invaded by mercs a lot and ALWAYS seem to lose.
