I bought a copy of this game, add on Anno 1404 Venice a few days back from Amazon.  The choice to buy came from two shops,
GoGamer. com and BLS mart.  I chose GoGamer, they shipped from southern Ca. , I got it expidited and paid total $39. 00+change.

When it arrived the packaging had no markings to show that it was a North Am or USA version or UK/Euro version it looked very much generic so I opened it and as I often do ignored the thin manual and popped it into my drive to install.  No-can-do, it would not install, it was telling me the game was not up to date, but the game was.  I popped opened the manual to find what I suspected the support phone number was in foriegn speak giberish, UK numbers that is, nothing I call regularly any way so thats what I know it to seem like.  So, I knew of course that I could not call them and almost for certain the problem was going to be incompatibility.

I contacted the seller through Amazon, he instantly defended the sale.  hmmm.  What questions run through your mind when a sales rep does this crud, well with me, 1.  he is a con artist 2.  he doesn't care about gaming 3.  he is dumb.  Any way, he told me these games were compatable, and that it was more or less fact because he had few complaints.  hmmmm.  I Called Ubisoft, they confirmed he was not telling the truth.  I wrote him back, he did not return the email for well over 24 hours.  He did end up sending me a return mail sticker, offering refund and removing his advertising on Amazon I think he investigated during the 24 hr. s but I ploted to damn him on Amazon review up to that point so that was a good thing for him in a small way.

So, now in the mean time what was I doing? I tried to reduce the patching of my Dawn of Discovery to see if this version was going to add a patch, although I was sure the reaction seemed to be simply just that the platform was euro and my Dawn of Discovery was not.

It is shameful how easily American sales rep's and creditors lie, cheat and steal.  I hate this about people, This guy did some right things but his first reactions were to intimidate me into relenting by telling me half truth as facts, he has spilled a little oil on my day by allowing me to know he will be such a d*ck when he wants to get away with it, even though he knows what to do any way.

As a topic for gaming you'll find that some bad copies of Venice add on are being distributing via Amazon because they are from UK and are not adverstised to be not compatable with USA version and also the second distributor was ignorant of this, I forwarded an email from Ubisoft.  After I phoned I went ahead and submitted a ticket to twice confirm this.

Well you know the powers-that-be are trying to turn the USA into a "service-based" economy, and this is but one example. I bought a pair of shoes last week and ( I'm sure you're aware of this), the checkout person wanted to sell me a $10 extended warranty on my frickin' shoes for misc wear. I gave my standard response,

"you mean you want me to pay you extra to insure quality that should already be, you jerkwad?"

Here's what you never ever ever want to do: Go gardening in your own yard and accidentally cut your fiber optic line. They will come out and fix it and never quote you the price for repair or commit to fault or liability. Then they will hire a third party thug to extort the cash from you. Welcome to America, comrade.

I have only bought on Amazon once and it was a used 6 disk OEM Cd changer/stereo for my (then) new Honda truck.  It came from a private party, and the jerk didn't lock down the cd changer inside like a honda dealer does (and anybody can do) before you ship it anywhere.  So long story short, it arrives and does not work, the changer throws an error that I asked at one of the dealers that I contract with about and they told me that's the cd changer telling me it's broken.

I contacted the seller and asked him to outline exactly what he did from the moment he took the first screw out of the dash to the time he dropped it off at the USPS station.  He sent me back a report that neglected to say that he had locked down the cd changer heads and so I wrote him back to tell him of his mistake at which time the story changed and he swore up and down that he did lock down the changer but just forgot to write it down.  I told him to put in a claim with the post office since I had paid him insurance money (don't know if they actually offer it or not but I paid him extra for insurance) and he said he'd check with the post office to see what he needed to do.

Well, oops, long story already long, he never contacted me back after that and no matter how many emails I sent him over the following month he simply ignored me.  I finally gave up and took the $200 loss

That was the last time that I shopped on Amazon because quite honestly, I thought everybody that sells on Amazon (back then) was a legitimate business somewhere in the world, boy was I wrong.

Edit I just bought a camcorder so that we could fill up our computers with videos of my standard Poodle that has cancer and not very long left in this world, and they tried to sell me a 1 year extended warranty for $65.00  I told the clerk or rather asked him, why would I need a 1 year extended warranty, isn't there already a regular warranty on this expensive item.  He told me that it was only good for 90 days.  Great, I think that shows how much the manufacturer has faith in their own products.  I declined, I'm not paying 15-20% (or so) the price of the camera for an extended warranty that I will likely never use as most people never do since it's one of those items that will get used for the next couple week and then sit in a camera bag for the next 6 months to a year.

I've heard a few stories like yours, but have been lucky I guess. I've bought a ton of used mostly books from amazon and never had any problems. Just ordered 12 JavaScript all used mostly From book dealers (stores) but a few individuals. I even had one that had the CD in it and never opened, maybe was a gift and he didn't want it ?. Much rather pay .50 than $50. My new motherboard came from Amazon (I love my new motherboard   Big Smiley Grin Laughing).

Surprisingly Amazon has done me more good turns than not when I needed it. They are very attentive to complaints. One time I bought a game, it was titled something like "American Conquest" or something but it had a very strange reason why it did not get along with my specs and not that I was to far behind, sorry I can't quite remember but I had XP and it had something to do with it. Any way when I described the way that the advertising did not include a warning and the company had mistreated me they refunded me the credit card payment reverse themselves and took it on as their own problem.

Another time I received a broken poorly packaged disc that was not even the title I ordered, I am a good Amazon customer I guess because although this was like $8.00 or something only they gave me that back too.

Not to say people don't mess around there though, but I think some of them are intimidated by Amazon way, way more than Ebay when it comes to rules and I do really think you were correct in assuming most shops on Amazon trend to have quality in comparison to some other portions of the web. I find some great sales there and trust them all the time, sorry to hear you had the trouble you did at a time when you didn't want more problems though.

I don't often by from sellers who are not stores there though, there are not as many, when I did try once the guy did send me a crushed up old box stuffed with news papers and a used up joystick. He advertised as new. I threatened him well enough and he refunded my money and told me to keep the joystick. I found a usable one and through his away.

I can't remember the exact name but something like Abe books or Abraham books, is where Samantha sent me when I needed to get all my A+ and MCSE books that the college (and I use that word lightly) required of us for class.  They were cheaper at the time than Amazon, but I can't recall if you are dealing with individuals on Abes or a company.
