I ran the XP Disk compression last night on my drive where I have demos/downloads and the archive files for trains and some other stuff.  The partition is 32 gig and only had 738mb of space left.  After the disk compression I now have  9.21gig of space that is a difference of over 8 gig.  I did my operating system drive and retrieved another 1 1/2 gig.  From what I have read on the net , the compression only compresses files that have not been accessed in the last 50 days and also does not delete.
It is not at all advisable (also off the net and advice from my partner)to compress any drives/partitions that games are installed on.  Although i am very tempted to find out how much I get back (you know, shouldn't do something makes you want to try it all the more, but common sense thankfully takes over  Agreed Happy ).

Any way just some useless information about my use of disk compression  Big Smiley Grin Laughing

I remember when disk compression was still new, the general concensus back then was that you only use it as a last resort if you are running out of space and for whatever reason can't get a larger hard drive to replace the filled one.  It may now have changed since the early days, and maybe it's a bit more gentle on the performance of the computer when accessing the data that has been compressed.

Personally, I don't mess with compression I have enough trouble just trying to keep uncompressed drives from crashing and burning, especially these damn western digital drives.  I just had another one crash and burn on me late last week, and lost about 2 years of "stuff" that I've been backing up to that drive.

This will likely be the first time that I will either send the drive to a company to try to retrieve the data or buy a software kit that will attempt to do the same unfortunately, however I think the heads are simply cooked now so hopefully the actual data on the platters are still ok.  There was a rumor at one time that disk compression causes hdd to wear out faster.  Simple rumour would be my guess else Microsoft wouldn't include it IMO.

If you want to gain more space, and don't need or care for System Restore, I highly recommend you turn it off.  I think it can take up to 20% of your drive.  If anything you might gain back a few more gig on a 32gig partition.

Before windows I rad compressed drives. I forget the software but, it would mount the drive after bootin order for it to be usable. Almost twice the disk space it seem. Don't use that anymore. Just get a 1TB HD and never worry anaig.   Big Smiley Grin Laughing

Very true  Agreed Happy .  Is pretty scary how much of a chunk the ole system restore will take.  It get's turned off once every couple of weeks, do a reboot then restart it and yep, have more harddrive.

Big Smiley Grin Laughing To think not so many years ago, only needed couple hundred gig and now...wow,   I usually don't uninstall the games I  enjoy playing and so the drive starts to bulge lol.....ratpacking games  Laughing
Do you uninstall your games or do you just keep adding more on?

Although... The last time that I had a system malfunction and spend literally no less than 8 hours on the phone with a Microsoft technician trying to get my computer to operate properly again (boot up, update the windows software etc), had I had a system restore point I probably wouldn't have had to wipe it clean (after 8 hours) to regain all the functionality of my computer.

The only good thing that came out of that was that Microsoft gave me a full Windows Vista Serial number where all that I had was an upgrade serial number, so in essence like giving me $200.00 for my troubles.  Which was worth it at the time since I had very little on my computer that I cared about saving.  Of course now that I'm onto Windows 7, it's kind of a moot point about the vista serial number.

I too remember one of my first computers that had around a 10MB hard drive and we thought we'd never fill that up, it was so huge at the time.  And the first time that I saw my monitor in colors instead of the green or amber monitor, wow, what a treat that was.  Even the PC's at work all had like 10MB hdd in them, although that's where my first 10MB hdd came from, when work upgraded the computers they let me take home one of the 10MB hdd to try to use in my own computer and after cleaning it off it worked fine.
