No, the video voices in this one are in English.

If I had to guess where this ultimately came from, it would have to be that somebody that had access to it, leaked it early.

Ah okay, didn't tried it.

Then it must be from the Beta.  Gaming Minds released these (Beta) Demos for testing at the beginning of august.  So one Beta tester might have leaked it.

Once upon a time, a loooong time ago I picked up Patrician III, but I just couldn't wrap my head around it.  I think I ended up giving it away.  Since then, I've been playing more 4x games (Civ 4 and the new Elemental) and my thirst for city building has been re-sparked, so over the weekend I picked up Tropico 3 (with expansion), Settlers 7 (damn Ubi and their draconian DRM, but I still couldn't resist), and Dawn of Discovery (back in the day I really enjoyed Anno 1701) all from Steam...  Assuming I can play these well enough, I may be interested in re-trying Patrician with this new version 4.

But how much of it is a city building game and how much of it is a trading simulation?  I had always thought all the cities pretty much turn out the same because of placement limitations, but I could be incorrect.  I also see that cities have walls, so there really is no room for expansion, is there?  Unless you demolish walls, and build new ones?

In my opinion, it's 90% a trading simulation, 2% city building, and 8% moving up the ladder of characters job to get to the top.  It's definitely not a traditional city building game like Simcity or even remotely like Tropico, it's really all about trading your way into fame, to where you've made your city residents happy because you've brought them everything they could want, and then running for office to get into the lord mayor position (or a lesser position) to where you can add buildings to the city, but generally these buildings are to suit your own purpose.  For examples, to build a house you do so not because it looks nice, but rather to house the workers that you need when you build a factory, things like that.

So to me, it's really a trading simulation game first and foremost, and well...  Yeah, I'm just going to stick with calling it a trade simulation game as the city building aspects of it are too sparse to even lump it into my idea of what a City Building game is to me.

I believe you can build outside of the walls, if I'm not mistaken there are predetermined places to be able to build just like in Patrician III, and if there is any sort of theft or warring then it would be a strategic choice as to whether you put your buildings inside the walls or outside the walls I would think.  I couldn't play the demo long enough to find out what would happen, sorry I grew bored of shuffling my boat around from port to port to buy and sell goods.  For me there is far too much time spent in the beginning of the game having to shuffle around a boat trying to earn enough money to buy another boat, and then another one, and finally supply my constituents with that which they desire and run for office etc.  Just a bit too slow for me, getting into the action.   But I know many people love the Patrician series, I think probably more in Europe than here in N.A. but never the less we have some that love it.

and Dawn of Discovery (back in the day I really enjoyed Anno 1701) all from Steam. . .

I found this humorous.  Anno 1701 is the 3rd game in the series with Dawn of Discovery (also known as Anno 1404) being the 4th.  The original, which I enjoyed very much, was Anno 1602.  Then after that was Anno 1503.  Did you mean to say one of those by any chance, because Anno 1701 isn't an old game.

1701 came out way before Anno 1404 Dawn of Discovery.  The important thing to remember is that there was also another Anno 1404 (I'm pretty sure there was) and that this new Dawn of Discovery uses a lot of the mechanics that were evident in 1701.

So in answer to your question, no I did mean 1701, it was my first exposure to the Anno series of games.

Anno 1602 - 1998
Anno 1503 - 2003
Anno 1701 - 2006
Anno 1404 - 2009

There was only one anno 1404 and dawn of discovery is it.  Its called anno 1404 in Europe and dawn of discovery in North America.

Anyways, I wasn't making fun of you or anything, I just thought it funny that you refered to a 4 year old game (assuming you bought it when it was released) as "back in the day".

Well of course 4 years in this modern age of modern marvels to me seems like an eternity.  I was just watching a show, actually I think it was History's Channel's Modern Marvels where they listed their top 10 modern marvels of technology, some of the stuff they showed seemed like it happened ages agao (back in the day, if you will) and that we now take for granted as being just part of our lives.  Gaming was on the list, although it was the WII that they were talking about.

...But how much of it is a city building game and how much of it is a trading simulation? ...
Part of the title for IV is  "Conquest by Trade"
The description is;
"Your goal is to rise to the most successful and influential member of the Hanse, ultimately being elected Elderman, leader of the trading league."

I think CB is on track.
