Note:  I merged MaxKos thread on the free MMO 'Voyage Century' into the Free MMO's thread and because his message was dated prior to my first thread opening message in the Free MMO's thread it appears at the top where you see it now.  If you like, read it, then when you get to message 3, that is the true beginning of this thread

Smiley Blink Voyage Century is an MMORPG which I've been playing recently and although not my usual thing is packed with features and you can do something creative without endless hack and slash.

Its visuals are of a high calibre and you can choose one of 5 professions to venture forth on both land and sea and it has its servers based in Canada which deliver a good connection and no lag. What makes it different for me from other RPG's, of which I've got dozens of half finished titles because eventually I get bored with the same old thing, is its variety and you can get on with your various activities without being constantly nagged or attacked, its got a very spirited forum and for a game of such depth plenty of helpful guides.

Its like The Guild/Pirates of the Caribbean/PortRoyale2 and some Gothic 3 all rolled into one and for a Free Game is outstanding, I don't know how a game of this style and content can be done for no contribution, although tokens can be bought for later stages, they are not necessary for progression

Just an Idea, check out its website for info, it just requires an installer program and a medium download

Thanks for the review/tips.  Usually these "free" MMO's support themselves on (like you mentioned) the tokens or the mini transactions where you can buy stuff to enhance your character and or add to the game in some way.  I haven't played this one but I did play another free MMORPG named Archlord which in my opinion was absolute garbage.  Without buying the extras in microtransactions the game was virtually unplayable in any sort of competitive way.  However Archlord had a brutal beginning in the U.S. where it was sold at first for $49.99, and a monthly fee, then it went to just buy the game and no monthly fee, and finally ended up as don't pay for the game, don't pay a monthly fee, and the optional micro transactions.  I don't know where it is today, I would assume if it's still around then it's still the same no purchase price, no monthly fee and buy our stuff in the store.

Actually now that I think about it, all free MMO's that I've played have had some sort of store to buy "extras" to help the player along.

I'll look this one up and see how it is.  If the visuals are really really sweet then it might be worth playing.  The nice thing about micro transactions on MMO's is that it's up to you if you want to spend $15.00 a month in buying stuff from their store or if you want to skip a couple months while still playing.  The downside is that everything is so dern cheap that many people don't realize that they've spent $100.00 at end of the month because they've bought stuff at 50 cents or 1.00 at a time.

Thanks,

Over the past 5 or more years that I've been really interested in MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online RolePlaying Games for those that didn't know what MMORPG meant), I've tried out many pay to play (P2P) and many free to play (F2P) MMO's.  Unfortunately many MMO's in both categories can kind of suck.  However, every once in a while you come across a F2P MMO that really shines and is a lot of fun to play.

Here's how they work in a nutshell:

(click to show/hide)

So with that out of the way, I thought we could have a thread that lists Free MMO's that people can play if they are into this sort of game, we can list not only the good games but the F2P MMO's that we don't consider even worth spending the computer time to download.   Don't be shy anybody, feel free to add your own suggestions on F2P MMO's that are both good or bad.

So, I was over on the Sims 3 forums and people are getting frustrated since the last patch broke the 'Create a World' tool and eventually the conversation got around to games that people play that are not made by EA.  Somebody posted a couple links to some F2P MMos' so being that I like MMO's I thought I'd give one of them a try and hit on a winner the first time downloading with...

Runes of Magic: http://us.runesofmagic.com/us/index.html
Ruins of Magic is a F2P MMORPG that is very VERY much like World of Warcraft.  The game world looks very similar in style to WOW, although the game plays a bit different.  RoM is supported by people buying 'stuff' through the games online store, things like mounts (horses and other creatures that your character rides to move around faster) and an assortment of potions, or runes etc.  The way that it works in RoM is that you give them your real life money to buy 'diamonds' then you can spend those diamonds in the online store for anything you might want.

While you don't necessarily 'need' to buy diamonds and hence spend real money in the game, I personally have found it useful for some things.  For example:
(click to show/hide)

Really, RoM so far (only up to level 11 as of this post remember) this game is really really enjoyable and very much in the same realm as Wow.  Don't get me wrong, there are some bugs in the game just like there are in WOW everytime they release a new expansion, the main difference being that WOW's 22,000,000 users foot the bill through their monthly subscription fees to pay Blizzard to fix the bugs that they create in the game, where as RoM, not all the bugs get fixed as fast as they might in WOW and honestly I think that's ok since I need not pay them anything at all every month and can play it as much as I like.

If you're into MMORPG's or maybe just want to give on a try to see if you like it, I highly suggest that you try Runes of Magic.

Some pro's and cons of RoM:
1. Rune transmutation can be fun.
1. Rune transmutation is expensive.
2. Friendly people willing to help you out.
(click to show/hide)
2. Some real asses in the game too that would loot ninja a new level 5 player.
3. Really nice graphics
4. Plenty of quests to keep you busy
5. Everything is overly expensive in the auction house
My guess is a hurt economy by gold sellers that the developers are trying very hard to curb  now.
6. Game is going through it's growing pains and with each expansion (they're up to chapter 3 now) they introduce bugs that eventually for the most part get fixed, but some don't
It's funny how if they introduce a bug that if the gamer sits in his house for more than 1 hour he starts to accumulate diamonds at the rate of 100 per minute, that bug would be fixed the next day, but other bugs they introduce go unfixed for a month.

7. Slow leveling. -
To me this is a plus, I don't really care to get to end game all that fast and be stuck around sucking my thumb waiting for the next new chapter to arrive.

8. Item Shop (in game store) IS expensive. $9.99 for 200 diamonds and a low level mount costs 199 diamonds..
Wait for the double diamond weekend sales that they have every now and then if you want to buy diamonds since you get well... double the diamonds for the same price so 9.99 gets you something like 400 diamonds.  If you buy larger amounts of diamonds then the price goes down slightly too, like 19.99 will get you 1000 diamonds on the double diamond sales.
9. You don't 'need' to buy stuff from the item shop unless you want to PVP after level 50 to 52 (you can PVP however at any point after level 10 I believe)

Anyway, if any of you that are involved in playing FREE to play MMO's feel free to post about them here, I'm never opposed to finding another new F2P MMO to have some fun.

A screenshot of Runes of Magic.  Note that the reason why my winged mount looks like he is floating above the ground is because he really is floating above the ground, that's the way winged mounts work, and it's not a problem like the MMO that I listed above where every character sits 8 inches above the ground.

Click thumbnail to view it larger in a new tab (or browser window if you don't use tabs)
This image is now old, my new interface is to me greatly 'enhanced' though most people would say it's greatly cluttered and cuts off too much of the viewing area on the screen, I like it. I don't have an image to show as the servers are in maintenance mode tonight until about 3AM so can't show the new GUI which to me is greatly improved, more informative and better organized for me.

Sorry I don't feel like typing up more at the moment, but check out Allods Online.  It's a great game - highly professional.

Some pros and cons (from my personal experience):
+ great graphics
+ unique endgame (astral ships)
+ always open raids going
+ many high levels willing to help low levels with difficult raids and bosses
+ mostly friendly and helpful community
+ item shop unnecessary
+ lots of quests

- slow leveling
- low level cap (40)
- professions not very profitable
- some classes unbalanced

As of the new patch, more reliance on item shop has been introduced (not sure if items are available through questing or not, as many other item shop items are).

Ok, ima go back and do a recap now that i feel like typing.

Plus
- Really good looking anime like world
- Giants, elves and humans
- Mounts that you CAN*** get for free (***this involves lots of surveys that will spam your inbox >.>)
- Dual wielding some swords
- Generations (like chapters in your game CB (currently G10))
- Now, this is a cool thing, Rebirths, you age once a week in our time, lvling is easy at the start but once you get to 30 it gets realllllllly hard, by then you will be about 2 - 3 weeks into the game, also, rather then using skills lvls them up, you do that, then use action points (gained from lvling and aging and some quests). now for free youcan reset your lvl to 1 every 3 weeks (it leaves all your skils where they were though, and then you get more action points :D (that was a longggg sentence >.<)
- Lots of quests
- tonnes of clothing options
- Lots of different equipment and such
- A huge amount of skills (there is "life skills" like cooking and weaving and tailoring, refining etc.)
- Easy money making (farming wins ^^)

OMG this is going to be sooo long >.> sorry in advance

Negatives
- Your weapon seems to go through you and the ground alot while sitting and riding mounts
- Sometimes enemies can melee you from across the room >.>
- Pathfinding, it kills you >.>
- Unless you wait till your really high lvl, G1 is impossible (can be skipped thank god)
You have to look at the mabi wiki ALOT for some quests (mainly the Generation one)

Okaay, im done, I hope to see some of you try it out, and if you do happen to, come to ruairi server and add masman, and i'll help you out ^^, ok, baaaaaiiii

I'm going to try it masman, assuming that the client downloads in a reasonable amount of time this time trying.  When I tried it the first time you posted about this MMO, I was downloading for 10 minutes and had only download about 90k worth of data out of the 1.1GB client download.

I have to admit though, I'm absolutely enthralled with Runes of Magic other than it really needs a larger player base, one can tell a smaller player base from a game with an auction house and how things don't sell or how fast they do sell I think.

Oh, we just had an earthquake here in S. California, 5.9  It felt a lot larger than that here at home with some things being knocked off the shelves.

It's downloading much faster now, I'm about half way done so that's like 6 minutes for half a GB.
