This has probably been done before but I did a search and didn't find anything relevant hence the new post.

I'd like this to be an area people can discuss what New type of city builder they would like to play.

I, in particular, would like to see a city builder based on the Mayan or Aztec cultures from prehistory through colonization.  A new "Pharaoh" would be nice and did anyone ever play "Startopia" good idea but the game itself kinda sucked but a space colony builder could be cool.

. . . . . ready.  GO.

I enjoyed Startopia, not enough to keep it like so many other of my games that are still around here but it was an enjoyable game for the most part.

I'd really have to go with another game based on the Emperor Rise of the middle kingdom culture at this point, I think Rome is done to death already and doubtful that I'd buy another Roman CB game at this time, but give me one based on Emperor and i'm right there at the store to buy it.

Fascinating question. My problem is defining something it would not take the developers five years to program.

I have read several books about the early history of the US District of Columbia, and I have come to think that it would make a wonderful basis for an alternative history builder for the PC.

Although it could start with the initial selection of the ten mile square site (during the first session of Congress) anywhere, it would probably work just as well if it began with the end of Andrew Ellicott's survey of the actual site in 1792. That way the actual terrain elevations and vegetative cover (which are fairly well known) could be used.

The player would be in the role of the Managing Director of the consortium which contracted to build the governmental buildings and streets from the proceeds of the sale of the lands designated for private development (i.e. not reserved for government use). The game could default to Pierre (Peter) Charles L’Enfant's plan, but allow the player to pick instead one of the other plans which was submitted -- or to strike out without a plan other than the government reserved lands as decided by the game developers. He would not be under George Washington's supervision and thereby required to use Washington's stone quarry for building material.

The game developers might have to be intensive about the years before 1801 when the Congress and the Executive Departments would move-in by default, using whatever buildings the player had finished.

Beginning in 1801, the player would cease being the Managing Director and become Governor of the Territory of Columbia.

I think the game would quite naturally run its course by 1850 as an ending date.

So that's a "thumbnail" of my idea of an interesting game. It could work in a more abstract way for a new capital in any developing country in any era. I just happen to find the alternate history possibilities for the US capital to be very interesting.

It could also work (with a lot more programming) for something like the Second Empire reconstruction of Paris.

I also think a game based on building one of the "Garden Cities" of the mid-twentieth century would be very interesting if it were based on a realistic economic model.

The ultimate CB for me would be ancient greek, like the era of the Iliad, with an RTS engine for battles like Age of Empires (II: conquerors).

I'd love to see a deep city builder from this era -- Creating the cities of Thebes/Athens/Sparta -- or going on the lines of the Iliad, Troy -- but the cb would need to be innovative, latley there have been some good ones, but there are still a lot of improvements that could be made to this type of CB.

Also all these CBs have been implementing the ability to create armies and attack other cities... id love to see huge maps where the ai could develop cities, and using AOC type battle style, try to dominate your enemies... but you would not necessairly have to use military, could use political too (and with the army, you dont have to destroy a city, you could capture it, and then continue to build it as your own from there).
Becuase having a massive map might not work, maybe do Total War style army movement, where there is a map overlay, and you can move your armies, meet up with other armies on the world map, etc... (I guess you could even think of it like SimCity 4, how there is a world map, and each region is its own town -- but for the sake of armies, have areas of land for travel... it also would not be restricting, you could try to colonize new land along the way (you arnt limited to pre-made town/regions to develope).

Lol, I could describe all day more in detail how this game would be the ultimate game for me.  Pretty much taking a few ideas from different games and cb/ and putting them into one ultimate package for my favorite time period.
