Just in case anyone is interested:

Quote
Hello,

Due to unforeseen cirumstances, I have been forced to close Tropico 3 Fansite. Many thanks to all my users over the time we have been open.

I may see some of you on the Kalypso forums in the future.

Good Luck to you and keep enjoying Tropico 3 Smiley Blink

Regards,
topleya

If you have a "favorites" link for this British site -- it will now put you on the Kalipso forums' page.

The closure was rather quick and without forewarning. One has to wonder if the lack of traffic for the last several weeks was the "unforeseen cirumstances" -- but one has to cut the sponsor some slack on that issue.

I got that message this morning too and it left me wondering if they didn't want to pay the bills anymore to keep the site hosted, or if as you say, they haven't really seen all that much traffic over there, so why keep spending money to keep the domain and to host it somewhere or lastly... Perhaps somebody tried to do an update and the database became corrupt and they couldn't bother to start from scratch again. And maybe truly lastly, perhaps the site was hacked and they didn't have backups to bring it back to what it was.

It's so much fun to speculate.  Did that site ever get a "lot"of traffic?  The times that I visited it seemed like it didn't have much going on unfortunately.

In all fairness, I don't think that people really gather around their favorite games anymore, with the amount of games that come out (except in our genre apparently), I don't think the fans have time to form the glee club for the game, plus people really want to interact with the developers now adays, and the best place for that is where the developers are hanging out.

I only hope that it's not an unforseen circumstance of ones loved one becoming ill and the partner having to take care of her while she's in that type of coma, or something like that.

Yeah, that is a shame. For almost a year now, CB forums have been dying (guess Tropico would be classed as a CB) - I blame it on the developers (hey...we're not making money anymore! Must be time for Hero & A TV reality show.   Looking around cautiously)

I can only hope that the debacle with Cities XL does not make any publishers or developers with good ideas for CB games from trying to do them.  We had a fat run for a while, and now it all seems rather still at the moment.  We can only hope that we'll get another glutt of CB style games maybe next year or perhaps there are some already in the frying pan that have not been mentioned yet by the devs or pubs.  One can hope anyway.

Od course, whenever Diablo 3 comes around I'll have my game for the next 2 or 3 years if it's anything even remotely as addicting as Diablo 2 was for me.  I'll even put aside SimCity 4 in favor of Diablo 3 any day of the week, yes to me, Diablo 2 was really that good of a game (for it's time).

Hey

Wow, didn't forsee this.   Was surprised to see this on your front page.

Oh the speculation is fun to read.   Database is still saved on my computer.   Hosting costs or low numbers was not a reason, with the domain I secured, I got a huge amount of traffic from users simply searching for the term "Tropico".

Key reason was a lack of time to continue moderating, maintaining and updating.   Don't get me wrong, I loved making the site and was proud to own it, but just didn't have the time to control it.

I am working on another site, but it unrelated to Tropico and is a project that is being done by myself and others, so less work load.

I will be visiting this site though, massive fan (as you know) of Tropico and also a huge fan of the SimCity series and actively play SimCity 4.

Got Cities XL a few months back, but stopped playing when the closed the planet offer.

Anyways, I do intend to pop in an say hi once in a while.    Hello and Welcome

Hey Topleya, thanks for clearing that up.  It goes to the front page since Tropico's expansion is forthcoming so all the topics in this forum end up on the front page until I change what forums appear on the front page when ever the next hot game comes out.

Lack of time to update is probably one of the key reasons that we stay as a smaller bedroom community here rather than try to be a big boy, which is fine by me.  I like to know all the people that visit here almost personally.

I learned with out CivCityForums.com website that I took on more than I could chew and about a quarter of my intended features and new projects were never finished due to taking on more than I could actually accomplish while the game was still hot, now that it's a yesterday game with little to no chance of new patches, sequels, dlc etc theres no motivation for me to finish up any of the features that didn't make it 100%.

I really would have liked to finish up the build your own city feature that got to about 65% completed as it could have been a lot of fun, but my coding skills are sloppy so the larger it got, the sloppier it got to the point where I couldn't find anything that I needed to complete it and or things that I needed the coding to do couldn't expand to do what I wanted them to do without doing a huge chunk of code rewrite.
